Title: Weapon Personality
Post by: Necrogigas on <03-01-13/0126:39>
Does the weapon personality need an integrated weapon commlink? Or can the personality just be a chip put in the weapon?

I think you can put it into any device as long as it actually has some kind of computer in it.  Like any smartgun.  What it's supposed to do is give it a "metahuman-like interface" right?  So I figure if you've got like, a cutesy personality on a smartgun that doesn't have a weapon commlink, your AR interface with it is all candy pink-and-blue and uses phrases like "oh noes! only 4 more bullets!" when you're low on ammo as opposed to a plane "Ammo Remaining: 4".

Then you can give it the Voice Command/Response mod so it can actually vocalize!  "Aww, you hit him so hard he took a nap!  Sleep well Mr. Lone Star~

Well, the text of the accessory mentions the gun's computer - so it would have to have one in some form, at the very least.  Which sounds a lot like Weapon Commlink to me.  But it is rather vague, smartgun system might well be enough.

Given that a smartgun already mentions adding electronics, I would figure that would be enough. It might need a Pilot upgrade, but that's a software aspect that shouldn't need any capacity.

And then, just think! You can have clippy popping up every time you level your weapon at a target.
"It looks like you're trying to shoot someone. Want some help?"

Actually, it's Tomey in Shadowrun.  ;D

And make it visible/audible to everyone in AR, so they can enjoy it too.

Load Tomey into a tacnet.

Slingers. Pure awesome. Did that ever see the light of day?

I think that all weapon personalities should be high-maintenance female AIs.

Preferably named "Vera" or  "Betsy".

"Mungo gotz da nuu shoota."

"Oh great, this is going to be wonderful.  Another PAC?  Gatling gun?  Don't tell me you kept that MG-42 from when we had to deal with the Old Skool Nazis!"

"Nah, Mungo haz Holdout."

"Sir, truly, I must insist that you refer to me properly, I am a Holland and Holland Royal Double Rifle in .500 Nitro Express.  And will someone please save me from this savage, he has taken a hacksaw to my barrels and shoulder brace!  Those were finely crafted by the finest British Gunsmiths the world has ever known!"

"Is it sad that Mungo's 'Holdout' is smarter than him?"

"Dude, the ANVIL we got from the Tolkien rejects is smarter than Mungo!  I think it's sad that he outsmarted the Nazis."

Weapon personality just makes me think of the great talking guns from Borderlands 2.

I love the guilt-ridden sniper rifle.

It reminds me of how much I've pissed Handsome Jack off.  ;D

"Say hello to my little friend. No, really."
"...Hello."
"Howdy! My name's Jasper, but you just call me Ja---"
BOOM
"Aw, now why'd you go and do that?"

Last thing I heard about Slingers was that the script for the pilot episode was completed early last year.

I'm surprised it's taken so long for AR to start showing up in modern media.

I'm contemplating my face/pistol specialist having two opposite personalities. Basically the little angel and devil sitting on your shoulder. May even go as far as in her AR having them sitting on the gun talking to you

Angel:  "You should show him grace and mercy in torturing information out of him, a bullet to the knee will certainly clarify his thoughts towards holiness and redemption."
Devil:  "Hell with that, Sucking Chest Wound!  That'll make him focused on answering your questions so you can take him to a street doc!"
Goon:  "So I tracked the sweat shop down by forcefeeding stealth RFIDs into the orphans and then selling them to the place..."
Angel and Devil look at each other and nod, speaking in unison:  "DRAW ME AND SHOOT THIS SLOT OF A MOTHERFRAGGER IN HIS SLITCH FACE!"

I think I've been reading the (sometimes NSFW) webcomic "Too Much Information" a bit too often.

Every webcomic I've ever read 100 pages of or more always dissapoints... why do they all turn into massive cliche soap operas?

On topic, what kind of advantage would a weapon personality offer, every time I think of weapon personalities I just imagine the turrets from Portal crossed with Aunti Dot from Halo Reach.

I don't think there is a real advantage of it. Its purely fluff.

And thus we have the reason why it's so cheap and doesn't take up a slot.

Though it would be kind of fun if someone's Weapon Personality turned out to be a free Machine Sprite or something.

What if Weapon Personality could also be a agent that projects onto VR and you could give it Social Skills like Intimidation? I could see that working.

Would be up to the GM, but I would say that if it is useful for things like that, then the cost should go up or it take up a slot.

That would be what we call an AI. Or at the very least a DAMN good agent. Also, projecting the weapon personality into AR visible to others would be a separate mod (Custom Look). Meaning that the weapon personality would grant you a +1 or +2 circumstance bonus to Intimidate when the weapon was involved.
