Title: Smartlinks on bows
Post by: Reiper on <03-20-13/0304:12>
Just a quickie (and hopefully one with few arguments).

I'm making someone focused on bows and arrows and was wondering if a smartgun is supposed to work on a bow or not.

Chummer doesn't give you the bonus to it, but I've come to not completely rely on that for my dicepools.

I don't see why it wouldn't work as it could easily detect the level, tension, etc on the bow and give an overlay of the flightpath for the person shooting it. I didn't specifically see anything saying it would or would not work in the SR4 book, but there is always a chance that I missed it.

Thanks bob, I swear I had read that just missed it when I was going back over it.

One more question on the bows, can I attach a mini grenade to the tip of one?

There're explosive (DV+1) and incendiary (white phosphor for additional firedamage) arrowheads in Arsenal and "payload" arrowheads (-> splash grenade, 5m radius) in the german version of the same book.

Yep, *almost* any grenade type you get can, you can get an arrow or crossbow bolt with the same thing built into the tip.

It's important to note, however, that you don't just put on a mini-grenade.  There are specific specialty arrows for different functions, and you buy the arrow.  There's a bunch of special ones in Arsenal.

Of course, was trying to find one that acts as a flashbang but didn't see it.

Unfortunately, I don't think there is one - the specialty arrows mimic bullet types, not grenades.  You might be able to talk your GM into letting you make something special, but do be aware that means risking Distinctive Style.

My archer character (just posted for feedback) isn't going to be active until I find a campaign to run her on, so will take it up with the GM then.

Sensitive system on a cybered character was really interesting

OK, that Smartlinks can work on bows? Makes me even MORE scared of the Troll Bow Adept...

Troll Bow Adepts with smartlinked bows aren't really that scary...

Bows do (rating +2)P damage, rating is capped at 8, bow damage is capped at rating x 1.5.
You only need 2 hits (1 hit when using explosive arrows) to reach the damage cap, so neither strength higher than 8 nor a high dicepool for multiple hits do any good.  :(

Unless using the stupid cheese that's MRSI software, bow usage is really limited.

Adding a bows concealability issues and the problematic rules regarding firing speed (quick-draw, ready weapon to reload etc...) you are better of with a throwing adept mixing knifes with grenades  ;)

I completely agree here.
