Title: Far Cry 3, and Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon
Post by: Critias on <04-12-13/1511:29>
I know a couple of us have played the latest Far Cry, and had some fun with it.  Ray, for sure, is actually PSN buddies with me, so I see his achievements and high scores right there next to my own...rampaging around the islands were fun for me, and the fact I can "reset" my progress -- not undoing my levels, just handing territory back over to the hostiles -- and take every bad guy base, over and over again?  Hells yeah.  There's nothing in that game I love more than being friggin' Rambo the PhysAd, rampaging around the jungle with a bow and a machete, taking enemy forts without sounding an alarm, bounding from takedown to takedown, and having a good old time.

But wait.

You guys, for reals, wait.

Because check out Far Cry: Blood Dragon.

It's the most 80's game of all time.  The most lovingly, terribly, gloriously, retro-awesome video game I've ever seen.  CLICK THESE LINKS AND BE MADE WHOLE:

This is gonna be the best worst game ever.  It's just...brilliant.  It's so 80's it hurts.  It's so awesome, I have to wear shades to look at it.  They cast Michael Biehn as the hero, a Mark IV Cyber-Commando!  It's just...it's...sublime.

It does look kind of amazing from what I've seen. Let's hope they can pull it off.

There's a great interview with the lead designer on it over on Giant Bomb (http://www.giantbomb.com/podcasts/dean-evans-really-loves-robocop/1600-462/) where he basically just talks about how fucking awesome RoboCop is and the influences on Blood Dragon. Definitely worth a listen.

I, for one, welcome our new Terminator Cassowary overlords.

Yeah, this looks really cool.

It also totally spits in the eye of everyone who claims that the 80's Cyberpunk aesthetic is dead and that no one wants to see it anymore.  Bah.

I want my Shadowrun looking like this! :)

I can picture it now... a team of Firewatch commandos with lasers invading Neo-Islandnation and fighting cassowary biodrones. Also, there are Tron lines on everything. Because reasons.

...

Now I really want stats for cassowary biodrones. They're nasty enough without cyber...

Far Cry 3 was insanely fun, but Blood Dragon is a huge letdown.  The only good part is the constant cheesy shit they say.  At least you can chuckle while playing a silly game, I guess.

It's a $15 game Ubisoft Montreal threw together with elements they already had built for Far Cry 3, and one big-name actor.  It's not supposed to BE Far Cry 3, it's supposed to be an homage to the '80s cartoons, video games, and movies using Far Cry 3's build.

When you look at it from that perspective (You know, the perspective they had when they BUILT IT), it makes a lot more sense.

Fair enough.  I hated the 80s, so it makes sense that I dislike its homage.

Does anyone knows if it requires the original FarCry 3?

In the meantime, if anyone needs me, I'll be in my bunk.

Copy-Pasted from Steam's Store Page on this:  "Playing Far Cry® 3 Blood Dragon does not require a copy of Far Cry® 3."

So...  Far Cry 3, the '80s version, for $15.  I was sold!

Since we're on the topic of 80's... This has to be there:

Judas Priest - The Sentinel (http://youtu.be/8tv-e9DJqK4)

Perfect old school street sam track.

No, seriously.

I couldn't stomach playing it for very long, but now I feel a bottomless curiosity...  Literally?  There's a shark and you jump over it on a motorcycle?

And a lot more than a motorcycle.

Speaking of which, I'll need to sneak that into Basic's game.

Argh! I can't focus, I just roam around killing dragons and tecnho critters.  It's so delicious it hurts.

My only problem with it was the general darkness of the background.  It's great that bad guys (and everything else) glowed, but the thing that got me is, like, just basic terrain doesn't.  So I had to really tweak the brightness settings just to be able to walk around and not run into stuff all the time.

Other than that -- best game evar.  I loved it, and I think I might start a second playthrough.

The game is just a thing of beauty!  So cheap in price, doesn't need Far Cry 3 to work, and has the production values of a full-fledged game!
