Anyone who flips through the rule books knows that there's a lot of cool gear, most of it for the GMs to throw at stupid runners who think they can go Pink Mohawk on the UCAS military. So of it is potentially useful, but with the cheapest helicopter still being more than 200,000 NU and a permanent middle class lifestyle costing less than most of them you know you'll never have the money to get one. Steeling one is generally a bad option because odds are anyone who has one also has the means to track you down and kill you. So, What gear have you been eying but will never get?
My top five...
1. BAE CENTURION
2. GMC “HARPY SCOUT”
3. DASSAULT PAYNAL
4. Cascade Skraacha (LAV)
5. Just about any submarine
-
1- GMC Banshee
2- Aztechnology Lobo
3- Ares Dragon
-
I remember when we became the new ruling class of Dubai we totally had a submarine. ;D
-
I do not know what dimension you are from but it sounds like a fun one.
-
For me, any (or all) of the thunderbirds and the Dassalt Paynal. I don't know what it is but the picture of that thing just makes think it is the best thing ever. Not quite a helicopter, not quite a thunderbird, not quite a fighter jet but combines elements of them all.
-
1) Aesir Satellite
-
- 1)
Boeing Unicorn
- 1A), ordnance for Boing Unicorn
-
Yeah. Even the cheapest T-bird, which is supposed to be a favorite among smugglers, is out of reach to runners. Due to its high cost. Unless you’re playing with the “characters can spend any number of points on Nuyen” house rule.

Delta-Grade Synaptic Boosters III

a dragon's tooth... :'(
-
a dragon's tooth... :'(
That's... not as unattainable as some of the other things on this list, if you go for an adult dragon. It is difficult, but not impossible, for a team of metahumans to take down an adult dragon, especially if they have some heavy weapons on their side. A Great Dragon's tooth, however, is not something you'll ever lay your hands on.
-
Unless that was the plot for your run, and your GM made up a new great dragon for that purpose, (Or even one of the lesser known ones, though I wouldn't.)
-

Not to mention being given a metric ass-ton of points so one can have that T-bird and the skills and attributes to be a decent, well-rounded character otherwise.
Now I want to see a 900 BP game with that house rule in effect....
-
Of course, that only applies if you're BUYING these things, instead of stealing them.

You're flying a 2'084'775 Nuyen stealth VTOL in one game!

Yeah, but with that point level, it might be close to that as personally owned :)

My buddy had 3 of those top 5. God knows how, but he did at one point.

Actually the Cascade Skraacha LAV is doable using the Arsenal rules for Used Vehicles, the “characters can spend any number of points on Nuyen” house rule, and Restricted Gear 1.
It becomes 16F and only costs 380,000 Nuyen after a 20% discount. That leaves 324 BP for character creation.

I totally would want to see a vehicular weapon system named the "Boing Unicorn".
-k

I want:
The cruise ship from Deadly Waves or the Hensley Class Destroyer to be my pirate base.
And the F-B Woodstock or Aztec Halcon.
-
Why is there so much stuff the fluf says we should use regualerly and yet no one can ever afford? Poor communication between developers?"
-
I think they mean well financed syndicates or cells. Perhaps we aren't going to enough sign ups hosted by Jack Sparrow for his pirate crews?
-
I just don't get why there's so much gear that just isn't a realistic option or even something runners would ever run into. Seriously, if i run into half the stuff in Mil Tech Spec 1 or 2 then odds are I'm either GTFO or about to learn first hand the difference between chunky salsa and picate sauce.
-
Well, allot if it are things that corps use, the other bit is that people like me run military games.
-
So it's stuff you get issued if your running in Bogota for a AAA, got it.
-
Ask A4BG how close to bogota he is currently, and who he's working for.
-

Alright Guns, you heard the man. How close are you and who do you work for?
-
Sure or a one off run where you just want the players to have chance to play with some fun toys. We recently finished one of the Dawn of Artifacts adventures and we spent half our time zipping around the countryside in a panzer/thunderbird. Sure we didn't own the thing, but if we got in a scrap we had stats for it. So they show up but I don't think most of it is intended for a 'typical' shadowrun. Aryeonos apparently runs campaigns based on the other use for these things, military/merc type campaigns. Just think of it as adding versatility to the game.
-
I don't mind it being there, I just never get to play a real game with it. Hell, i'd be happy if i could lay my hands on one helicopter and not have it be a autogyro. A bloody Huey would work.
-
Don't get me started on that stupid autogyro. Why they changed that vehicle from helicopter to autogyro I'll never know. But the Nissan Hound is almost doable for a helicopter.
-
Of course, that only applies if you're BUYING these things, instead of stealing them.
I was wondering what they were going on about.
Heck, if you're just gonna buy it, take out a loan, or something, SINner.

Ifriti Sophist
-
Steal it. Wreck havoc with it. Crash it in a spectacular manner. Blame the anti-dragon terrorists.
-
You better have a damned good rep score to get a 2'000'000
Wulong Nuyen loan from a syndicate.

I want a top of the line comlink with 10 in all attributes and all program's at 10 and Mungo's Da Cruizer (my own custom build)
And after ripping into everything ill wait on my boat for the Thor shot to slam down.. :)
-
Fairlight Excalibur.
-
"Allright guys, here's how it works. You pick up however many dice you can, throw them out on the table, ignore the results, and you succeed anyway."
-
hu?
-
There are ways to get the more mundane of the big ticket items, but most player's never even consider it/them. Take out a loan from a syndicate.
Yes, this means that they own your soul... And that occasionally you will have to do favors for them, as well as pay back the loan (with its stupidly high interest rate) but it is an option. Also could be a great tool for the GM to use as a plot device

Anything in the gear chapter at all. I never get to play.

Shut up and get back to writing source material for us!! :D
(writers, geeez.... You'd think thousands of adoring fans who wait with baited breath for every new book they write would be enough for them... But nooooo! They want to play too!)
:P
-
Why not do PbP or Skype games? or does your contract forbid that?
-
Does the sheep make you GM?
-
Does the sheep make you GM?
No, but everyone in my group does.
-
Well, I can't do more than offer, CanRay ;)
-
Indeed, you're always welcome at my table as well.
-
Same here though I think the commute might make that a little improbable. I used to have the same issue, no one else wanted to GM until I finally managed to convince one of my players to take over. Now he's looking for someone to take over for him. Never ending problem; everyone wants to play and no one wants to GM.
-
Pshhh* Should I just start up a new PbP?

please do.

I will make a Forever GM PbP game, don't tempt me...
Forever GMs, people who don't get to play: vote, what genre, (para)military, mercs, BT espionage, PM espionage ... wait no, no James Bonding. Masterpiece Mystery stylings, Gumshoe Noir, ... Sky pirates, Hacker core... what?

Dude, I follow a few simple rules;
1: He who GMs picks the setting, lays out the character ground rules, etc
2: He who chooses to play, follows the GMs ground rules.
3: I don't play PbP :D
Hey have fun!!!!!
-
3: I don't play PbP :D
Well then you didn't have to say anything. )=3
-
Have you considered Google hangouts to run a game? I know scheduling can be a pain but it gives a more immediate feel and lets you interact with people in real time.
A game for GMs sounds like it would be ... interesting. Seeing how many of us can keep our big mouths shut about 'that's not how I'd do it...grumble grumble". It can be really hard to let go of the reins at let someone else be GM sometimes. Not that I'm speaking from personal experience or anything ;)

I've tried pbp SR. It always falls down in the ops planning stages. Not enough mohawk.
-
Scheduling prevents me from doing anything real time right now, but I'm active enough on the forum that I can guarantee it won't be too slow moving.
-
I've been posting on my phone, but I'd have to be home to make a character.
-
Done Skype games and that works reasonably well....
PbP just seems to get a little crazy and garbled for me...
But I freely admit that it works for some people!
-
if i understood the posting of a character bit i'd be tempted to join one but just trying to read it makes brain hurt sh@#%loads

I use Daisybox instead of chummer. Cuts down on the infodump of all the skills I'm not using.
-
Daisybox is hugely out of date unfortunately. You can sort your skills in Chummer by what you've invested your points in.

I never figured out how to use Chummer.
Could give it a shot, I suppose.
-
I just wrote myself an Excel sheet. Easy, if you're doing the BP generation. Gets more difficult if you're doing karmagen, because things don't scale at a linear rate, and there is a limit on nested IF() statements. The Hero Labs generator is fine, for the most part, but there are definitely bugs, especially in the newer things. Primarily with qualities that have choices in them not actually going through with those choices further on (such as the Ronin quality not actually giving the discount to the type of 'ware you selected, or the Magician's Way quality not providing the discount on the powers you chose).
-
Chummer has the advantage that it actually gets updated and for the most part, follows the rules but is pretty easy to customize to your own house rules too, or at least the most common house rules.
-
Yes yes, we know you love BP gen, but characters made with BP system don't come out as nicely well rounded as they do for Karmagen.
-
Hear hear. That was my main reason for making the switch. Well that and it got rid of the worst min/maxing offences. Uh wait, I don't want to start a fight here. They are both great systems...yeah that should do it :P
-
For a good year I maintained my buildpoint based spreadsheet, but after trying out karma gen it really rounded it all out in a nice way.
-
i have to say with some concepts i find that karma (psycho troll hand to hand combat monster) works soo much better than BP (Technomancer quick in and out hacker) but its a case by case basis... Plus i enjoy making characters for the sake of making characters, most of the ones i design just end up not being played with and sitting there till i need something for my pink mowhawk campaign, at which point they tend to die or get left in the dust of the over powered character my players have :D
-
If I get to play a character, it's usually in a game that wasn't supposed to be a one off, but ends up that way...
Still have my hacker, that, through the corse of a few GMs went around the world, and ended up buying hirself a Unicorn, and modifying it to be a VTOL reconnaissance, and hacking hub.
That is so far the only character of mine that's been in more than one game, and more than 2 sessions.
