All right, read through the fiction in the preview pack, and I have a quick question. Did that wagemage summon up a bug spirit?! Like it was no big deal? Are the Invae becoming less of a huge threat for mages to control and channel, or is this just more proof of Ares going "buggy"? Inquiring minds, and all that.
-
My absolutely unbiased opinion is that...you're gonna have to wait for more fiction. ;D
-
It would seem summoning insect spirits is a thing now. Personally, I blame the elves.
-
Same question in DS (http://forums.dumpshock.com/index.php?showtopic=38785&view=findpost&p=1225480)
While Critias was only slightly less cryptic there, it does indeed sound like Ares, in their constant quest to make earth a better place, found a way to bring the bugs into our world directly. Or maybe it is a consequence of the naturally rising mana level, either way, stock up on DDT ;)
-
Given what little we know, I suggest two possibilities, neither of which are all that nice to think about.
1) Ares has somehow discovered a way to bring the bugs into our world without needing vessels.
2) Given that the 'form' a spirit takes is based on the magician (i.e. a spirit of fire may look like a fiery tornado, or an angel with a flaming sword, or a brightly colored pony with a tattoo on its flank) at the time of summoning, the magician chose to make the spirit appear as an insect.

a brightly colored pony with a tattoo on its flank...
... no soup for you !!!

...or a brightly colored pony with a tattoo on its flank...
You mean "ShadowHoof" The Best Ork-Pony Decker You've Never Met?

Did Bull's kid SURGE when no one was looking?
-
No, but Bull has a Brony equivalent now. ;D
-
If it's one thing the Corporate Council and the Shadow Community can agree on, it's the Mannulus fratres ad mortem order.

I second this motion.

Hmm. Now I have a great idea for a Centaur changeling magician...

In the new preview their is art of a insect looking spirit, so I believe bug spirits are becoming a big thing again.

They were always big.
Especially the ones that inhabit former trolls. ;D
-
Universal Brotherhood big.
-
Nope. Worse. Try Ares big.
-
What if . . . the old Universal Bortherhood went generational? As in, there are kids running around who were born to UB members and have got it in their heads to "bring back the Glory Days"?
-
Could be, I doubt that all the UB members were caught/killed, or even all chapters.

The UB members that were in the know enough to be summoning bugs weren't exactly the types who would have that many opportunities to reproduce. There ARE former UB mages still out there (see the Mission 'Brothers United'), however.
-
Well as Spider shamans are a thing perhaps some deal has been struck with other insects. I don't know much about them in general but I have heard that some of them are not so bad.(although bad is quite relative in shadowrun.)
-
Spiders aren't insects, they're arachnids.
And the bugs ARE that bad - so I'm not exactly sure what it is you've heard of them.
-
Didn't say they wen't bad just that they were not as bad. I have heard (on Critical glitch) how some bugs would help take down other bugs.
-
Bugs from different hives will sometimes war for territory, but only when there isn't a common threat between them. The only type of bug that goes in for killing other bugs whole cloth are the Mantis spirits. And that's because snacking on bugs is part of what they do to summon more of their kind (which they still need a vessel for).
-
Then I can honestly blame Bull for giving me the wrong impression.
-
There are mantis spirits that gain power by hunting other types of bugs.

Why is that? UB being a sect, of sort, well the highest members always get the best benefits.
Including, "bless" wives or men by their "sanctity"...
Cold Iron;
As for spider spirits, there is an old scenario of SR2 Total Eclipse, related to novels (in the trilogy of power, I believe),
which could show you a little about them;)
-
The UB wasn't that kind of cult, Boomstick. My opinion? They deliberately kept away from that kind of thing. Why? Because that's the first thing people look for when they want to bring down a cult. The thing about the UB is that they were squeaky clean, not raising any suspicions for the longest time. And furthermore, the kinds of people who would engage in the practices you're talking about aren't the kinds of people who become insect shamans. Twisted or toxic? Sure. But Insect? No. Insect shamans are dupes, serving the Hive. They are what you may call True Believers. The people who do the kinds of thing you're talking about are all about being in control. Insect shamans willingly give up control to their totem, especially when they manage to summon a Queen.
-
You got a point about the clean thing, I forgot that they were looking "white as snow" at first.
For the other things, well, nothing is impossible, being a lot of thing righteous
would not impair your ability to be a pervert (as much as "being a pervert" as meaning),
and also, nothing says that could not be part of rituals or access price to magical groups
and so on. Like an insect shaman impersonating the queen of its hive, "testing"
the more worthy pretenders.
At last, the kind of practice I described was not something necessarily enforced,
but something that some people could have be willing to do.
There are always volunteers to go along with the man/woman in charge based solely onto this
and not him or her being a great person. People tend to mix things easily. And also, power is an aphrodisiac.
