Title: IC: The Old Smoke: Raiden and Dragonslayer
Post by: Csjarrat on <06-20-13/1512:35>
_____Raiden______
You look out of your window onto the grey dirty streets of the east end. How did life get you here eh? It was yet another grey and dismal autumn day, but at least your heating was on. The Soycaf machine bleeped to let you know it'd finished brewing a pot, Its bleeps rapidly drowned out by a new sound.
The Philipino couple from across the street were at it again. a full scale domestic in the middle of the street for the third time this week.
She had her hands full of clothes and was clearly trying to leave her furious partner. You watch on as the argument gets louder, lights coming on in the other apartments as the neighborhood tunes in to watch today's episode of "happy families". The argument ends as it always does, with a smack. she is dragged forcefully, sobbing, back into the block and the neighbors return to whatever it is that normal folk do.

//Matrix Message Protocol 1.0.2b//<<New Message:: Hax, its Raymondo here. Got some work I wanna push your way, you busy at the moment? pay is around 1500 quid, its an on-site systems analysis.
I know, I know, its not your usual kind of work but it sounds like some easy money to me. You wont even need to fight for an Admin ;-) hit me up if you're interested. You still on for our Fighter Ace tournie on Saturday wingman?//End Message//

______DragonSlayer____________
The smoke in the air is thick and cloying, its grabs at the back of your throat but whatever it contained made you wanna dance. The barman pushes your drinks order to you and sticks out a hand for payment that dwarfed even your own meaty paws.
The "pretty" female ork you were chatting up seemed to have lost interest in you and was eyeing up a big spender; Some dick in a pinstripe suit who'd just bought a bottle of champagne. What a fucking statement in a bar like this.
Shaking your head in disgust, you feel a hearty tap on the shoulder, Danny greets you with a big toothy grin and a handhsake. Got a job for you mate if you're interested?

*If that keeps up I may have to see if I can do something about that, or at least find out whats up with those two always fighting and quickly* Hax thought as he saw the scene unfold as he sipped on his cafe. It wasn't a terrible place he thought, but it sure wasn't what he used to have. he had almost finished his cafe when he received the message from Raymond, a small smile caught on his face when thought about Saturday, Ray always thought of something fun. < Hey Ray, yeah it sounds simple enough, not much of a challenge but moneys money. wheres the place, and what kind of system we talking about, and definitely still on wouldn't miss it for the world > he got up and cooked up from scrambled eggs, "Ah, nothing beats a hot cup of joe and some eggs in the morning" he picked up his comm and just checked through some of the headlines and checking his programs half paying attention as he waited on the response and finished his breakfast

Sounds like you might have to get your hands dirty in there, so bring your game face eh boy? :-)
Its a warehouse down near the cutty sark stop. i'll drop you the address now. <<attached file>> Contact is a Bloke called Jimmy, dwarven bloke. said he'll let you in tomorrow morning at 9am so get an early night mate ;-) i'll be on Fighter ace later if you fancy some co-op?>>

Dom paid the barman, before pounding down almost half the pint.

"Always looking for work, Danny. Now is as good as any, seeing as that bloody over dressed prick", he jerks his head over at the man in the suit, "is ruining my good buzz."

Your search finds the local business registry for london metropolitan council.
The building was registered derelict about 35 years ago when the previous owner (GSK ltd) went bankrupt.
It's classification is "Light Industrial" and the only other feature worth noting in the document is that is has riverside access.

Your search for Jimmy turns up empty. no matter what database you hit-up, nothing connects a man called jimmy to your building of interest.

"Yeah, fuck knows who he is. Some hotshot new-kid-on-the-block I hear. slings a lot of money around and rumoured to have influence "up-the-chain" so to speak.
Finish your drink mate, gis five minutes an I'll go up to my office and get it sorted so we can have a little chat about this job eh?

Hax is up fairly early the next day, grabbing an early breakfast at home before leaving. before he leaves he makes sure to throw on his coat over his body suit and shirt and place his pistol in its concealed holster, *shouldn't have to use this, hell hope I don't still not what I am best at, but better safe than sorry" as an after thought he grabs his shock glove as well. the pistol is loaded with gel ammo "alright the quicker I get this done the sooner I get paid, lets head out" he hopes on his bike and rides down to the warehouse, once there he makes sure to park in a somewhat concealed spot, his bike has anti-theft but that doesn't mean he wants it sitting in the open. he is there a little early so he sets his I ball down and sends it to scope out the perimeter of the place and sets it to feed its findings back to his him. once jimmy lets him in he sends a command to the iball to patrol the front and to make checks at his bikes location every so often as well if the bike is ever missing or being messed with it will send an alarm to Hax's commlink. OC first time using drones (other than a doberman shooter) for me,lemme know if this needs a roll or anything not sure if their would be an equivalent of a video link from this iball it also has chameleon coating

not sure if this is needed or if its the right roll for the pistol when trying to conceal further, palming? will be defaulting on agility anyway so,

Your Bike purrs to a halt and gridguide cheerfully informs you Due to high ambient levels of vehicle crime in this area, parking here will invalidate your insurance. Gridguide does not recommend parking at this location>>
The drone accepts your patrol command and you attach its sensor feed to the upper right of your Image link display, allowing you to check its progress at a moment's notice.
//Pilot v3.0//<<Command accepted, route confirmed>>
Simple commands for drones like "patrol this route", "follow that van" etc are easily interpreted by its pilot. more complex stuff like "shoot every third person wearing blue through this doorway" would need a roll against the pilot + fuzzy logic so just keep commands really simple like you have done so far.

The camera feed shows little of interest, the warehouse looks abandoned. If it weren't for gridguide taking you directly to this address, you wouldn't have been sure this was even the right place.
All the windows were boarded up and covered with metal bars, and the only sign of life was a small boat moored up on the concrete jetty at the rear of the building. a moving security camera covering the rear entrance shows you that the building at least has power, which is a start!
You spot three possible entrances to the building;
-the front door, which appears not to have been used in a very long time indeed
-a very large metal shutter door covering most of the back of the warehouse, which appears to have been used semi-regularly
-a small rusty access lift to a basement, which is in the same state of repair as the front door.

The lone camera performs a 30 second sweep left to right, right to left of the rear aspect of the warehouse, covering the concrete landing area (sparsely covered in rusted industrial equipment and semi overgrown with weeds) and the jetty area, which is empty except for one small speedboat moored up on the right hand spur.

before Hax goes to any door he heads back to his bike, looks for something to place over it, a tarp or something similar  and does so, if there any piles of stuff or the like he rests it on them. also he reprograms the iball to partrol only the area his bike is parked. (how much of the warehouse area gets covered is up to the GM)  now then, where o where is that contact. he then notices the security camera.
*hm a security camera, bet that's not with the police force. * "hmmmm still whats a good system check if I can't test the security system he runs up his programs goes AR and tries to gain access to the camera feed.

following the attempt whether successful or not he takes a deep breath and walks up to the front door first and gives a knock. if nothing happens within a few minutes he walks around to the shutter door and gives a knock on those. if the attempt was not successful he does it with his head down, acting like he is cold.

I believe this falls under hacking on the fly since I assume I would have to attempt to hack the system and not just the camera
program exploit R6 + hacking skill 6+ improved ability 3+specialization exploit 2 =17
17d6.hits(5)=5 (http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/4098640/) hits meh, also running stealth at R6. this may cause me some trouble but its fun and easily explained. if the attempt succeeds I want to set in a loop for a whole sweep left to right. if I do not then I just drop the attempt. (hopefully before any surprises)

Luckily you find the camera is actively broadcasting over wireless.
Your preliminary probe into the system grants you a user account on the camera's node. You can see it's feed, but do not have permission to edit/create/or write changes to any files.

The door feels incredibly heavy as you knock it, it feels heavily re-inforced and the sound doesnt caryy. after waiting for a few minutes, there is still no answer.

Hax walks back around out of the camera's view still keeping his face down."where the bloody hell is that guy?"  <hey ray, I am at the place you sent me, its after the meet time and the bloke jimmy hasn't shown. you got anything? am I at the right place? I'm getting a chill ya know? he resends the address of the location he is at to Raymond.  after that he uses his vision magnification to check out the moored boat and the surrounding area. * I don't like this my gut says something may be up but nothing really seems out of place, well, at least not the normal out of place for work like this. he walks back to the area he hid his bike and does a scan for all nodes within the area.

There isnt really anything special about the boat. It is fairly small and powered by an outboard motor. you could probably fit 4 people in it, but it looks more like its a 2 person craft. it is moored via rope to a post on the concrete jetty.
//Have you tried the back door? The place ain't exactly legit mate, I doubt anyone in that end of town is stupid enough to open the front in case the coppers have got eyes-on.//

If you are just searching for every hidden node in range, you need to hit a threshold of 15 as an extended test. if you know there should be a broadcast somehwere and want to find it, you do a success test with a threshold of four. for this, you'd need to hit the 15, so keep testing. each test takes one combat turn to complete mate. all the matrix actions are explained on SR4a pg228, as it turns out, these guys aren't running anything in hidden mode (perhaps you should put that in your security report and analysis for them eh? ;))
Your scan of the area shows a peripheral node broadcasting from the rear of the building, you know this to be the camera. there are also 3 active broadcasts from within the building, one with much stronger signal strength than the others; this originates from below the floor level of the building.
You also pick up a smattering of lower signal nodes for advertising boards and passing traffic.
Title: Re: IC: The Old Smoke: Raiden and Dragonslayer
Post by: Raiden on <06-22-13/1501:43>
after making notes of the nodes in the building he sighs. No answer at either of the other two entrances guess I gotta head to the back, no avoiding the camera is seems. I'll leave the cam alone, if I need to I can try to doctor the footage at a later date, but still lets not blatantly show my face Hax lowers his face pretending to be cold so that he is looking down, and does his best to time the camera sweeps so he shows up as little as possible.
do I need to roll for that? if so then I reckon its infiltration. defaulting on agi 4-1 =3d6

"ah you're a gent, thanks for that" He says, taking a hearty swig of his pint.
"The job is a catch-and-deliver. cargo freightliner is heading through the 'Channel tomorrow night at high tide, and will "accidentally" lose a box overboard. It's your job to retrieve this box, and get it safely up to Clacton-on-sea without the coastguard picking you up. It's right on the border of the dead zone, so patrols should be light.
Should be a good run, though the contact is a newbie and a bit of an unknown round here, says he understands my concerns and has offered a decent 2.5k for the job. He'll have someone waiting on the north beach and you'll need to complete the meet before dawn. Flash him with an IR flashlight as you approach the beach and he'll complete the deal.

Your knock on the metal shutter rings out loud and clear, and after about 30seconds, the ancient motors fire up and haul the shutter up to about your waist height with the torturous sound of metal-on-metal, and then stops abruptly.
A heavily accented scottish voice comes from the other side of the door;
"You the techie? come under this door, nice and slow. no funny stuff."

You crawl through the gap and get to your feet. Turning around, you see your contact; Jimmy, and he's pointing a double barrel shotgun at you. Another large man stands next to him, who isn't introduced.
"glad you could make it, we've just got to go through the usual security checks blah blah blah. Ivan here is going to pat you down. don't fight it or try any funny stuff. He aims the shotgun at your chest and cocks it. I'm sure you understand why we're a little cautious.

Ivan must have been about 7 foot tall, and nearly as wide. his bald head just becomes one with his shoulders, the bulking muscles he sported denying him the privilege of having a neck.
He quickly pats you down and finds your weapons, removing them deftly and placing them into a safe, located near to the back door. He stands up and moves back behind jimmy without uttering a word, his bulking frame blocking a good deal of your view past him into the loading bay area.

Jimmy the dwarf walks over to you and begins to speak in his heavy glasgow accent. His face is pretty chiselled and he's bearing a few scars. He's obviously seen some action.
"Great stuff, now the formalities are over, i'll take you through to the systems room and give you a wee briefing shall I? Jimmy un-cocks the gun and passes it to "Ivan", who never stops looking at you with a steely glare.
"I'm sorry about our little introduction, aye but things have been a little crazy lately, you'll get your toys back when we're done. I'm Jimmy by the way [he offers a handshake], nice to meet you"
"We've been having some issues recently mate, our computer systems have been a wee bit bonkers. Our stuff keeps going missing, shipments dont match up to our documentation and the like. Its all a wee bit weird. We've had a few unsavoury characters knocking on the doors yet the camera feeds show nothing. I think we've been well and truly done over and thats why you're here.
I know its probably not your full time kinda work mate, but by the sounds of it you can handle yourself in the techie world? I want to know how badly we've been done over and if possible, by who. Also mate, theres an extra couple of hundred in it if you can tighten up our security while you're at it.
That said, whatever you see in here today does not pass your lips again right? otherwise my mate Ivan here will be having a wee word wi ya, Glasgae style lad. Got it?"

He motions for you to follow him, and heads to the back of the loading bay area, where there is a small access lift built into the floor.
He pushes the button and both of you descend into darkness for a second, before a series of automatic lights flick on and reveal a huge underground warehouse. the access lift takes all of 30 seconds to reach the bottom, and you follow jimmy through an aisle made between crates, noting the signage in many different languages covering hundreds of different boxes stacked up 7-10ft tall.
He leads you into a small office that is piping hot, a large nexus and workstation taking up the solitary desk and a projected AR keyboard currently active. Jimmy spins the large chair around, motions for you to sit and then places a set of trodes over your head.
"I've created you an admin account, so don't worry about breaking into anything. i'll be watching your progress on these screens thanks to this simrig, so no funny business while you're in there.
Like I said, get in, find out what and who the fuck is dicking about with our systems. Ping me on Admin_002 in case of any drama."
With that, he connects your commlink into the nexus via cable and engages the trodes. Within a blink of the eye, you're in full VR on your home node staring at the open portal to the nexus.

After the frisking Hax accepts the handshake "yeah healthy paranoia is always nice to have mate. really? well you got the right man for the job then and I will see what I can do for your system." he follows him back to the other room listening as he goes as well as making mental notes of the things he sees within the warehouse. eidetic sense memory and multitasking after being rather abrubtly plugged in his icon shows up on his home node, this month his icon is a empty O-Yoroi samurai suit of armor with the face mask pulled down glowing blue and red. *well then, guess we should get started. hope my iball can get to me if need be didn't get a chance to ask to have it brought in, probably wouldn't have let me anyway* Hax makes his way to the warehouse's node. first he analyzes the node trying to find everything he can data errors, backdoors to the system, the works.
haven not done this type of thing before so heres my stuff.
lets start with a matrix perception check Computer 4 + Analyze 6+ 2 VR=12  oops, that is if I am hot, sorry I forgot about that for a sec.
12d6.hits(5)=1 (http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/4101238/) ... I see nothing XD he then Observes in detail, no roll. anything not running stealth I "see" or he could do this first
if he finds any backdoors, unknown icons or similar he attempts to trace them back to their origin.
I will wait to do the extended test after your next reply based on if he finds anything. also I assume that "checking the system" is fairly simple task and wouldn't require a roll, especially if I was given a code of how it SHOULD be.

The node is a really barebones interface, they really have spent no time sculpting it or personalising it whatsoever. you are in a pristine white room, with several black boxes representing connections to other nodes.
There is a shipping server, a security server and a workstation server, in a row equidistant from one another.
From your observation of the server, you can't tell that anything seems out of place so far.

yep, you're accessing their system via your commlink so you have all your software/agents and hotsim at your disposal. feel free to bring out the big guns :-) also let me know what programs you have loaded up.

Hax starts up his agent program and has it continually check the server and nodes for any backdoors, exploits, weak  spots and the like. R4 agent
He goes by and analyzes each server for any past error reports, checking the files seeing if anything seems out of place or if something was tampered with. he accesses the video records on any inside cameras and has it play through while doing so. He checks the systems firewall settings and power as well as the other defensive programs if any within the system. Multitasking power, I don't know if I need to roll a matrix perception for each node/server or any at all as it may fall under observing in detail. he also sends a message to jimmy via the admin address he gave him <sorry to bother ya but I noticed all your stuff is running as active and is fairly open for other people to find your nodes fairly easily, any reason for this? I believe that it would better secure this place to be running hidden if possible.>

at the moment he has all his ergonomic programs running. as well as his agent, exploit, browse, command and encrypt. his ergonomic programs are, bio feedback filter, armor, stealth, analyze, sniffer, and scan

After having a good think about it, you would expect an intruder to have left themselves an open door, a worm or virus that easily permits entry into a system or feedsback data to an outside server.

I take it you set up the agent's payload with the following then: analyze, attack, armour and stealth?
Your brief scans of the servers from the outside reveal little of use, from the outside they appear to be running normally. you'll need to get your hands dirty with this one.

<<Admin_002>>We're no techies here mate. the bloke who came down and did it for us did it years ago on the cheap. we've just never really thought that much about it since as we've never had any trouble. Got trouble coming out of our ears now though! Like i said, if you can patch it up for us, theres a couple of hundred in it for you. cheers.

You enter the shipping node, and are greeted with a wealth of information. the contrast with the previous sculpt was amazing.
Several different document archives were spread around the untidy node, and numerous data terminals still running and open from the last session.

Your combined scans find something, lurking in the corner of the node. it's shape is very very well concealed and it actively tries to resist and evade your scans.
It's hard to figure out exactly what it is, but there is definitely something weird in here with you.

You punch in "hardware store" into gridguide and it pulls up several options nearby for 24 hour opening times.
'Focus' looks to be the best bet after you quickly scan it's matrix page and the drive takes about 15 minutes through dull, unpopulated streets.
You find the IR flashlight after a bit of searching, for a very honest 25 quid. a set of thermographic goggles to match costs you a few more quid though, setting you back 150 quid
The Radio Signal scanner is on offer this week, and you manage to get a mid-level model for 25 quid, not bad.
Please deduct 200NY from your starting cash; you now own an IR flashlight, R2 goggles with thermographic (with space for one more mod-slot) and an R3 radio signal scanner

As you continually probe and surround the anomaly, it drops it's cloak showing itself to be a vibrant  mish-ash of geometric shapes, contantly re-moulding itself.
It begins to rear up and faces you, instantly growing a limb, except this limb doesn't have fingers, they resemble something more like...barrels? and they're spinning up?!

<<Woah woah woah, boy, what do you think you're doing? look at that code you daft pillock, it might tell you who did this fucking break in!>>
You've already destroyed the one fragment that you found, but Ryu still has his two fragments left.

Your inspection of the security server shows much the same layout as the shipping node, except where there were terminals full of documents, you have terminals displaying connections to the various security devices and their respective feeds in trid displays. There is a portal to the security archive here, where the connection and debugging logs from all connected devices are stored.
There is a feed from the rear facing camera (the one you gained a user node on) to your right, and a feed from a second camera covering a long dark hallway with some kind of lift at the far end.
Your initial scan of the node shows it has a higher firewall than the shipping node and it appears that it is running normally.

Looking at the fragments in VR doesn't tell you much more than you've already seen.
There is no associated user or process that is immediately obvious, as it was defeated before you ran a trace.
You load the fragment into your Edit software to view the fragment of code line-by-line but, it isnt capable of showing you most of the syntax and subtelty of the programming.
You garner enough to guess that it is somekind of backdoor, but to get at the fine details, you'll need to open these fragments up in a programming environment; and you know that they don't come cheap...

The Iball feed shows a large stray looking dog sniffing at the tarpaulin you covered the bike with.
The server appears normal, all the video feeds appear to be ticking over, but you can't verify the feeds are current without properly testing them. the security archive node still remains to be scanned however.

The archive is essentially a datadump, all of the security feeds spool their device logs for analysis here.
Your brief analysis shows that there are several stacks of archives;

1) Connection logs and user permission settings
2) Camera logs and configuration files
3) Sensor and attached devices logs and configuration files

The node is running smoothly, and the firewall appears to be intact.

After getting his extra gear, Dom heads down the the docks.  The job isn't until the following night, but he's more comfortable after giving his boat a once over. Everything looks ok to the eye, but a more in-depth inspection will have to wait until morning.

SEttling in, he cracks the fridge and goes over the plans he's made for future modifications. Right now he's only interested in a stealth coating, but the idea of a smuggler boat that can act as a submersible tickles him.

He just needs the money.

You head down to the small personal marina next to the old west inda dock, swiping your fake SiN through the security gate and walking down the long wooden jetty to berth 6.
There she is, what a beauty.
Listing lazily in the small swell of the marina she gently rocks, the sound of water lapping at the hull's of the boats moored up the only thing you can hear.

It's a really peaceful night, and you pull the zippers down the weatherproof cabin cover loudly, climbing aboard the sleek open topped craft for a quick once over.
The engines fire up with a deafening roar, chewing the water up behind you into a white maelstrom before you shut off the power.
All systems are go and you've got a full tank of boat diesel to play with. Tomorrow night should be a good one

You don't have to RP a full day if you don't need to get or do anything before your mission, just start in the evening mate

____________Raiden______________

The config files you scan appear to have been edited and re-edited repeatedly, and as ryu crossmatches the documents for you, you can see there is a pattern beginning to emerge.
There is an <<Admin 121>> connection from <<Unknown Node>> a few minutes before the camera configuration file is changed for both devices. Once the camera configuration has been changed, a minute or so after that, the lift controller is activated.
Some time after this, the lift controller is activated once more, and the camera control process is then restarted, and the config file reverted to its original settings.
This pattern runs for weeks, and at least one event like this has been recorded every week.
They've clearly made an effort to conceal their data trail, but the date and timestamps on each file definitely create a pattern.
Some good rolling there ;-)

The 'Channel is busy tonight, so busy it looks like the m25 on a monday morning.
The main shipping route is about 15knots ahead of you, and the 'Channel is pretty choppy tonight thanks to a stiff northerly wind coming off scandinavia.
Your sensor suite picks up the hulls of several cargo containers navigating the main shipping route and plotting their progress against the GPS feed in your virtual terminal.
You can almost feel the ping and return of the radar, and eventually you see the Vorontsoz's AIS broadcast appear in the GPS trace around 1am in the morning, roughly an hour behind schedule.

Please can you roll a sensor + perception test for me, you're jacked in so no cyber or enhancement dice.

The backups show multiple discrepancies with the "live" file. By the looks of it, there should be several pallets of goods that are unaccounted for.
The origins of the "missing" goods are wide and varied, though a good chunk appear to be shipped from South America
Your analysis of the file shows:
The backups were created by <<Admin_121>> on <<Workstation Node>>. Last edit: 3 seconds ago by user <<Admin_002>>

Your analysis shows that the file has not been treated with the same care and attention as the others, the Goods out successfully cross matches with the rest of your data, but the data trail has been obscured much worse than on the other backup file, almost like it had been edited in a hurry, or maybe the editer had got sloppy and made a mistake?
You don't get much, but can tell that the editer probably didnt use english as a primary language, as there were a few extra spelling mistakes and eastern european accenting on the words.

Please can you post your full sheet in the OOC thread? as i said, i'm still working off your brief PM so i dont really know what you've got.
The radar picks up the Vorontsoz at just over 10 kilometres away. following it is another cargo freighter, maintaining a 10 kilometer distance.
It'll take you about 5 minutes to cover the distance to the vorontsoz at full speed, and they're about 7 minutes out from the designated drop zone.
A brief bit of mental maths shows that you should have about 15-20minutes maximum in the drop zone to secure the package before the second freighter arrives.

Post by: Dragonslayer on <06-30-13/0743:01>
About time they showed up, Dom thinks to himself.

Idling the engines, he starts drifting towards the drop zone, if all go to plan, he'll only have to give her a nudge one the package hits the water, assuming nothing else goes wrong, like it sinking.

Infiltration test please, (pilot watercraft + Infiltration with a +2 for rough seas)
The engines gurgle and purr as you throttle them back, their status lights a reassuring green in your HUD.
You pick up a new radar contact, south west west of you by quite some way, exiting the Thames estuary control barrier.
It's hard to tell from the chop of the waves how big the signature truly is, but at the very least it's a craft of roughly similar size to you, and appears to be heading north, following the estuary out and around the headland.

You continue your slow, quiet approach towards the main shipping lanes and you can see the port and starboard lights of the vorontsoz approaching in the distance, pitching violently as your small craft is tossed about on the ever choppier sea.
Your atmospheric sensors are picking up an increase in wind speed and conditions are starting to look pretty bleak. Finding that box is going to be like finding a needle in a moving haystack on top of a bouncy castle at this rate.

The new contact begins to change heading away from the headland and out into open water, though there are still several nautical miles between you.

Great, here comes the fuzz, Dom grins, like they could catch him.

Activating the radio scanner, Dom keeps an eye, so to speak on the sensors, hoping to grab the package before either a storm hit or the unknown contact got to close.
Title: Re: IC: The Old Smoke: Raiden and Dragonslayer
Post by: Csjarrat on <07-01-13/0551:32>
You slave the scanner to the boat's main node, allowing you to add it's output to your sensor feeds.
As it fires up, the shipping lane lights up like a christmas tree, with a series of buoys denoting the boundaries with RF signals.
The approaching Voronstoz is ablaze with radio signal, and you can make out the fine details on the ship as it approaches and passes you.
It is a large cargo freighter, riding high in the water. It's sleek black hull, punctured only by anchoring chains and the bright white AR paint signifying its demarkation as the Vorontsoz.
The deck was fully lit, a menagerie of multicoloured cargo containers visible under the bright deck lights. You can make out a solitary light in the bridge, standing tall at the rear of the craft.
The first splashes of rain start to hit the roof of your craft as the weather worsens and the ping and return of your radar highlights that the new contact is on an intercept course with the Vorontsoz, roughly 3km further north of your current position and well away from your original drop co-ordinates...

Post by: Dragonslayer on <07-01-13/0758:46>
There goes the rain, perfect.  Ah well, should keep them blind, I hope. Come on, drop the fucking package already, we're behind schedule.

Dom ground his teeth.  He should have brought a raincoat, however, his armored jacket was going to have to do.  It looked like the cargo ship was going to have an interesting time, but so long as things went according to plan, it wasn't his problem.

Come on, drop it already.
Title: Re: IC: The Old Smoke: Raiden and Dragonslayer
Post by: Csjarrat on <07-01-13/0809:01>
The Vorontsoz gave off a huge swell as it passed, combining with the wind and waves to toss your craft around like a child's toy.
Your HUD shows the stability sensors pulsing red in protest at the shitty conditions, working overtime to manage the bow thrusters and keep your craft relatively level.
The rain really began to lash against the cabin, and the Vorontsoz's deck lights lit the rain into fast moving sheets; slamming into the bridge and cascading off it's steel supports.
The freighter passes you with no sign of dropping the package. As the distance increases, a staccato pulsing of light erupts from a bow mounted lamp.
It reminds you of the ancient flat-trids that occasionally get dragged out on "remembrance day", you know it has something to do with communication, but it isn't pointed in your direction....
Title: Re: IC: The Old Smoke: Raiden and Dragonslayer
Post by: Dragonslayer on <07-01-13/0927:37>
Setting his eyes to read the light flashes through the boat camera's, Dom kept pace.

Seemed like the op was off, but if something was dropped for the other boat, Dom was going to take it.  He wasn't going to leave empty handed if he could help it.  Which might not take long, if his engine readouts had anything to say about it.  The Nightrunner was a good little craft, but a good sailor had to know when to get off the water.

Dom hoped he was that good.
Title: Re: IC: The Old Smoke: Raiden and Dragonslayer
Post by: Csjarrat on <07-01-13/0940:10>
Your radar picks up a change in direction of the second craft, it is looping around to shorten the intercept trajectory with the Vorontsoz. through the break in the peaks and troughs of the large waves, you can just about make out a staccato burst of light in return from the distant boat.
A bright square of light erupts from the dark of the bridge tower of the Vorontsoz, and as you zoom in, you can make out the silhouette of a person wielding a box approaching the stern of the ship.
Your radio signal scanner picks up a signal falling quickly from the back of the Vorontsoz, it's signal rapidly fading once it hits the water.
The speed of approach of the second craft increases dramatically, your radar signalling <<potential collision course detected>> WARNING, Please change heading to 92 degrees and increase speed by 5 knots to avoid. in your AR feed....

Post by: Dragonslayer on <07-01-13/1203:02>
You know pal, you should really change course to avoid a collision, Dom thinks savagely as he races towards the radio signal.  Instead of turning away from the oncoming craft, he turns into it, hoping to scare of the other boat, so he can secure the prize.

The spotlight rakes the roiling sea around you, desperatley trying to pin you down but your ducking and evasion keeps you clear for now.
Your forward facing sonar detects the package, roughly 150yds ahead.
Sweeping your craft around it in a wide arc, you ease the throttle back keeping your hull between the interceptor and the package.
You jack out and snatch the boat hook from the emergency equipment locker and dash to the rear of the craft; ready to retrieve the package in the craziest game of hook-a-duck you'll ever play.

With one clean swipe, your hook finds a purchase on the grab handle and you haul the package aboard, dragging it into the cabin with you.
The spotlight returns for another pass and for a second, it's like daylight. two flashes to your right match up with two vertical spikes of white water erupting far too close for comfort, the roar of their outboard engines drowning out the reports of the gunfire.
Jacking back into your nightrunner, your sensors detect that the opposition is a RHIB class open topped boat, currently powered by two large outboards.
A round impacts somewhere on the starboard side and several more white spikes erupt from stray rounds, these guys obviously mean business.

An inflatable, in this weather?  Gutsy move, guys.

Safely seated in the armored cabin of his boat, something else the opposition didn't have, Dom opened the throttle.  The swells and wind would give him the edge over the RHIB, and the Nightrunner was heavier, which meant it was better for the roiling seas.

Hope they brought life jackets.

You gun the engines and try and put some distance between you and the RHIB.
Your craft protests and wails loudly as the ducts breach and clear each wave, status lights glowing red and easing back to green and stability systems working overtime.
You see in your sensor feed that you are slowly pulling away from the RHIB, making much better progress through the horrendous conditions, though they are still very much in the fight.
The mainland is now much closer, but the ferocity of nature's assault on your craft hasn't let up, lights from the mainland drowned under a blanket of rain as your wipers struggle to make a dint in the onslaught.

The brief spell outside to retrieve the package has left you totally sodden, and the boat's heating system wasnt doing much to shift your sense of discomfort.

Autofail, since a -4 takes me to zero dice.

Dom slows the craft a touch, wouldn't do to have his pursuers lost to far back after all, they just became his cover.  Transmitting the SIN attached to the ownership of the boat, he starts issuing mental commands, one to open a space inside of a bench, the package can go there, and another to stash his armored jacket, PPP gear and gun.  Couldn't have the cops finding that and getting suspicious, now.

You approach the shoal at speed, trying desperately to get out of the shitty conditions and into a nice safe harbour, but in your haste to clear the shoal you lose sight out a guidance buoy behind a huge swell.
Your approach angle brings you across the south eastern aspect of the shoal, shortcutting the safe angle of attack.
As you crest the humongous wave, the buoy reappears and instantly you know you're in the shit.
You slam the bowthrusters hard to port and gun the main engines into full reverse but it is too late, your momentum carries you into the shallows before your engines have time to respond.
A huge judder rocks the craft and the sound of tearing metal reverberates in your skull.
Warning lights light up every control panel and VR window. Your sensors scream at you.
The initial thrust finally catches up with and then surpasses your forward momentum, drifting you out of the immediate danger.
Instinctively you know that a milli-second later response from you would have spelled disaster.
the boat takes 4 boxes of damage, please resist 4S with WIL + Biofeedback Filter software rating as you were rigged in.

The warning lights begin to fade as the emergency systems come online. A series of internal pumps are now active, doing their best to combat the inrush of the cold north sea into your craft.
The craft feels wounded, its controls sluggish. you can limp it home, but you can't afford another lapse of concentration like that.

The feedback from the sensors clouds your mind for a brief moment, but you swiftly regain your senses and limp your craft toward the harbour.
Fifteen minutes of wrangling the controls and carefully balancing the throttle have gotten your around the headland and into calmer waters.
Your emergency systems begin to get the inrush under control, stabilising the internal and external pressures. The lighhts of the harbour have never looked so welcoming before, except for two of them.

Limping the Nightrunner into the dry dock berthing, Dom killed the engine.  A quick moment to stash his goods in their proper places, and he stepped onto the dock, still soaking wet.

Making his way towards the flashing lights and the awaiting badges, he smiled.  They thought he was the victim, which meant all he had to do was play that up slightly, give his report, and he'd be home free.

With plenty of time to make the drop.

Several repair drones awaited you on the drydock.
As the water drained out of the lock, a gangway was lowered to the port side access, allowing you to disembarked your wounded craft.
As you disembark, you see the scale of the damage.
It actually wasnt that bad, it just felt that way under full power.
A gash had been breached into the hull, below the waterline, but it was a fairly clean breach and shouldn't take too long to patch up.
Cost however, was another issue.

As you stand by the craft, two bleary eyed police officers approach, wearing the livery of the british transport police.
"Good evening sir, or is it good morning now? Do you mind following us to the harbour masters office and starting from the top? We need to know evertyhing about this evening's events."
The rain began to ease up as you made your way down the docks, a small convoy of repair drones providing the only traffic heading back to the craft.
To your left a small collection of commercial and pleasure craft rolled at anchor, with a series of jettys on the far side serving as mooring for a selection of high-end yachts and house boats.
Ahead of you, beyond the young policeman leading the way, was the harbourmasters office. a small two story building topped off by long range radio antennae and radar equipment.
Two Police patrol boats were moored up outside the office and beyond the office you could see the single story british transport police office, a shin-hyung flashing its blues-and-twos parked up outside.

The office was small, but comfortably appointed. wooden panels lined the walls and a small sofa was leant against the far wall. The policeman closes the door after you and takes a seat on the far side of the desk, motioning for you to take a seat opposite.
The Soykaf machine by the window spits and steams as the aroma of coffee fills the room.
"Right sir, lets warm up with a coffee and then you can fill me in on what just happened. Milk? Sugar?"
Title: Re: IC: The Old Smoke: Raiden and Dragonslayer
Post by: Dragonslayer on <07-15-13/0049:57>
"Coffee, oh yes please.  Milk and sugar would be wonderful."

Dom settled down in a chair, still soaked, and took a sip of his drink.

"This has been a bad night.  I decided to do some deep water fishing, my gear is now at the bottom of the channel, thank you very much, over a grand worth of tackle just gone.  I fell asleep, must have drifted or something, and got woken up by the rain.  I'm checking my lines, when this frigging zodiac comes screaming up on me, shooting for christ's sakes!  I jump into the cabin and tear ass back to shore, but the storm is huge, and my boat ain't designed for that kinda work.  You guys call me and I hollar for help, and then I hit the shoal and tear a hole in my boat.  Shit, that sucks  And here I am, I owe you guys big time."

He pauses for breath and drinks more coffee.

"So did you get them?"

The policeman nods as you recall the story, his commlink feed casting a blue glow over half of his face from his helmet's built in monocle display as he creates the report. He probes you for what seemed like an age, did you get any descriptions? Images? Exactly what time did it happen?
Your coffee tastes like heaven and you feel like you're beginning to dry off. An atmospheric sensor display on the wall to your right shows that the wind speed has started to drop and that the rain is lessening slightly.
If you can convince this copper to wrap it up and the drones finish up the repairs soon, you should still be able to make the drop before dawn.

Keep asking the same questions in different ways, the answers are still the same, Dom thinks.

"I'm sorry, but that's all I know.  It all happen so suddenly, you know?  It's not like this has ever happen to me before."

Your pleading eyes and controlled answers take the young policeman in, buying your story.
Ok sir, I'll leave it there. The repair drones have taken several bullet fragments from your craft for analysis.Ikve submitted the piracy report and your insurance will cover the fee, less the 150NY excess.
I'll need to go onboard and take some images for my report. So help yourself to more coffee, the machine does a good tomato soup too. I'll be back shortly

15minutes later the policeman returns;
Ok, you're free to go, stay safe. And if you remember anything more, here's my details <contact details enclosed>

"Thanks, I appreciate it."

Dom takes his coffee with as he settles back into his boat, the AR washing over him, giving him fuel readouts and damage reports.  Hell of a night, but it was time to wrap things up.

He was going to have a word with Danny about this though, whoever put this job out needed to lose a kneecap.

//You have 76% fuel remaining, all damage repaired. Full service required in 4 months or 1500 Nautical miles, whichever comes first.

The last of the drones exit the drydock area and the lock behind you begins to let the north sea in behind you with a deafening rush.
Several minutes later you are afloat, and under power.

4 hits.  I think I could have just bought the hits I needed, but I've never been clear on when that applies. http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/4132258/

Even with the recent damage, the Nightrunner powers forward smoothly.  It doesn't take long to get up to speed.

The lateness of the Vorontsoz, the drama with the zodiac, the repairs and the interviews had pushed you severeley behind schedule.
It was now nearly 4am as you round the entrance to the harbour, leaving roughly two hours before dawn to complete the drop.
You had a good 45 minutes of good running ahead of you, at least the seas had calmed from a roiling inferno to just merely "stormy".
Handling and piloting tests are now at -2 instead of -4
The VR console you commanded via the trode net showed that most of the emergency repairs had been completed well, though some small leaks were still present.
Your internal pumps still had huge capacity spare and were dealing with the now light damage perfectly, though you instinctively know she'll need some more TLC in the drydock before she's ready for more serious action.

The buzz of the coffee was starting to wear off and a general fatigue began to set in, the stuffiness of the now warm cabin not helping to keep you awake.

Piloting test for open water at -2

The running was much easier going now the swells had begun to die down as the wind dropped.
You cover the distance relatively easily, ducking through various crab pots and aqua farms along the route with no issues.
You arrive at the target beach just before 5am, giving you roughly an hour to complete the drop.
The swell was still pretty brutal as you approach the beach, Waves crashing into a foam of white water, the sound defeaning even through the sensor feed. It was going to take some serious skill to get in close enough to make the drop in these conditions.

Through your sensors you can just about make out the details of the coastline. a rocky beach runs for about a mile, framed on either side by large rocky outcrops. Overgrown sand dunes provided the back drop.
It matches teh description of the beach perfectly and your GPS shows you right on target.
It was game time.

After rearming himself, Dom slapped a magazine of Stick-N-Shock into his pistol.  Nothing about tonight had gone to play, not one damn thing, and if this turned out be another mess, someone was going to wind up shark bait.

Climbing onto to deck, he flashed the IR torch he'd picked up the night before, wondering how he was going to get this done.  Someone was going to get wet, since it wasn't like he could beach his boat.

He also couldn't shake the feeling that the Bobbies from earlier were almost to accommodating.

Your patrol of the beach shows nothing at first in standard spectra.
Switching to your thermo feed in your cyber eyes yields better results however.
The sea and surrounding land are cold, the whole beach area awash with cool greens and blues.
A regular pulse of heat at the base of the sand dunes erupts and disappears, flashing out a staccato burst every couple of seconds.
You keep losing the fix through the swell and the breakers, but there is no doubt you've found your mark.

Any place I can park, so to speak?  I don't know much about boats, but I think I could beach it and reverse back out, but I'm not sure.  Weighing anchor wouldn't help.

Hint: don't do this :-)http://youtu.be/2RQ3k2xraLg (http://youtu.be/2RQ3k2xraLg)
Beaching the boat in the current conditions will count as an extreme maneouvre (threshold 6), your rig will bring it down to (5) to do it safely. the more you miss the threshold by, the worse the end result will be, but you've got a stack of dice to go at with the hot sim +2, VR rigging +2 bonuses etc

got 4 hits, so not great, but not catastrophic either.

Guess there was just no helping it.  What a stupid plan from the get go, Dom thought to himself.

Giving the boat the bare minimum throttle, he cruises forward on the whiteheads, until the craft comes to a grinding halt.

Keeping his pistol loose in it's holster, Dom gets his boots wet as he hops out into the surf, package in hand.

"Somebody order a pizza?"
Title: Re: IC: The Old Smoke: Raiden and Dragonslayer
Post by: Csjarrat on <07-25-13/1426:38>
The boat purrs and gurgles as you ease back the throttle, riding the waves more like a surfboard than an expensive powerboat.
You beach beautifully considering the turmoil of the waves all around, a whitehead just catching the stern as the bow beaches skewing your landing slightly. You'll either have to get wet and sort your angle out or just give it some extra juice on the way home to clear the angle.
either -2 to re-launch the craft or a 30 second extended strength test (6) to fix, but beware of potential exposure stun damage
The north sea was cold. fucking cold. It laps and froths around your knees as you jump off the bow, wading up onto the beach.
Your quip is met only with the roar of the waves as applause, the IR beacon flashes continuously ahead of you up the beach and into the dunes.
apply total darkness visibility mods while on the beach. its cloudy and stormy so there is no starlight/moonlight to work with.

Bah, it was cold.  And totally dark.  Although that was what Thermographic vision was for.It didn't help Dom see, per say, but at least it kept the beacon in sight, and no one was going to sneak up on him.

Heft the package, Dom trudged towards the beacon, watchful and waiting for something else to go wrong, and wishing he'd both gotten something warmer to wear, and that he had a cup of soycaf waiting for him.

I gues my post from the other day got eaten.  Stupid internets.
Title: Re: IC: The Old Smoke: Raiden and Dragonslayer
Post by: Csjarrat on <07-31-13/1256:53>
The cool blues and greens of the thermo vision denoted the lay of the land, and the beacon flashed ever more brightly as you approached.
The uphill slog through the sand was harder than you'd imagined. the case heavy and your land legs hadn't quite returned to you after spending so much time in rough seas.
Your legs took some cajoling and over-encouragement to drag you up the beach and into the scrub of the dunes, especially after that freezing ice bath.
You were glad to have made it this far, the thought of your own bed and a steaming soycaf becoming an ever more realistic prospect as your final goal neared.

Something didn't feel right though, as you approached the beacon through the undulating dunes, an outline of a metahuman could be made out sitting on a deckchair next to it.
It's thermos flask next to it's right foot was still warm and glowing a nice red hue, but the outline of the person was a cool green, nowhere near warm enough to still be alive.

Drek.  Drek, drek, drek, drek.  Parties over, time to go and I sooo don't what to know what happened.

Dom slowly draws his pistol, while backing away from the unfriendly sounding noise.

Get back to the boat, and leave, before whatever this thing is decides it's hungry.  Don't run.  It has to chase you if you run.

The snarling and grunting gets closer, you see two heat signatures, roughly metahuman size cresting the top of the sand dunes.

Initiative:

Actions: communicate, run (25 metres -5 metres for boggy terrain)
Beast 2:
rea 5, int 4 (9d6.hits(5)=2) Ini 12 (http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/4165034/)
Actions: communicate, run (25 metres -5 metres for boggy terrain)

Both beasts howl into the night, clearing picking up your scent on the wind. They come barreling down the far sand dunes, closing the distance to you rapidly. Something inhuman about their lilting, half-striding gait alarms you, the howling makes your neck hairs stand on end; these two definitely aren't holidaymakers that stayed on the beach too long...

begin your pass

Dom whips the Predator forward, and starts putting rounds in the air.  It's loud without the silencer, and hurts the ears.  Hopefully a couple of sticky rounds will hurt them more, or else he knew he was going to get mauled.

Firing 2 rounds into the closest creature, seeing as running isn't an option, I would think.  5 and 6 hits respectively.  Ignore the second set of numbers, I don't know why I had it roll twice. http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/4165056/

Dodge: Rea 5 +2 for running (7d6.hits(5)=3) (http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/4165060/) you get 2 net hits from first shot:
Damage resist:bod 7 (7d6.hits(5)=1) 7stun damage dealt (http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/4165067/)
Dodge:Rea 5 +2 for running -1 defense (6d6.hits(5)=2) (http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/4165063/) you get 3 net hits
Resist:bod 7 -2wound mod (5d6.hits(5)=0) (http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/4165068/) 10Stun dealt

The beast nearest you hits the sand at 20 metres distance, convulsing and yelping as the electrcity paralyses its muscles.
The second beast barely breaks it's stride down the dunes and onto the flatter sand as you back up towards the boat
I assume you'd be walking back towards your boat rather than moving forwards?

begin your second pass or roll for initiative if you're all done on this one

One down, one about to eat my face.  Drek, this has been such a crap night.

Twice more, Dom makes the Predator roar.  If he could stun this one as well, he'd be home free.

Assuming it didn't have more friends on the flanks.

Yes, I'm moving backwards towards the boat.  2 more shots towards the upright Ghoul, 7 and 2 hits respectively. http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/4165079/  And this is my last pass.

resist: bod 7 +edge 3 (10d6.hitsopen(5,6)=6) (http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/4165391/) 4 stun damage taken

rea 5, -1 defense, -1 wounds (4d6.hits(5)=2) (http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/4165398/) round grazes it's arm

Your second salvo isn't as efficient as your first, the report of the predator was deafening but only the first round impacted.
The beast, whatever the fuck it was, took the round to leg. It yelped and howled into the night as the electricity coursed into it.
Your second round seemed to do nothing, it was either a dud or a flesh wound.
The beast at least seemed to slow with the pain, your cautious falling back towards the boat now matched its advance. Only 20 metres or so stood between you and the cold white break-water of the north sea and realtive safety. 35 metres stood between you and a grizly death at the hands of this wounded beast.

Roll for initiative for round 2

Hell, stubborn thing wouldn't go down!  Keep shooting, bullets always work if you use enough of them.

Dom keeps moving back, and fires another pair of rounds, "Orc is not on the menu, so piss off already!"

He hoped this would be enough to end this, he'd already burned though almost have of his magazine.  And if he had to reload, the monster would get him, and Dom would kill himslef before he let the infection turn him into one of them.

6 hits and 7 respectively.  That should do it...I hope.  http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/4170083/

The monster went down, convulsing and writhing in protest.
An eerie calm followed, punctuated only by the breaking of the waves as you catch your breath. Just as you thought you'd saved your skin, a chorus of guttoral growls erupted from the far sand banks, about 60metres away. You spin on your heels to find the boat, it lay 10meters behind you in the break water, still sat at an acute angle to the beach.
