Title: Idea for a demo game - "Moving the Football"
Post by: Belker on <09-12-13/1152:45>
I've been kicking around the idea for running a demo game at the FLGS after the regular 5E books hit the streets. I was trying to come up with something that would allow people to grab a character, pop in, play a few scenes and then drop out, but still be part of something larger. As a one-shot demo and something to attract attention, I'm OK with things being a little over the top. (And my mohawk may be showing a little.) I've just come up with germ of an idea and I'm looking for help in fleshing it out.

Setting: Chicago, late 2074 (just before the first mission of Season 5). Mr. or Ms. Johnson gives the runners the task of picking up a shipment in Calumet Harbor, the big smuggler's haven, and making a series of stops across the Chicago sprawl before making a final delivery somewhere in Northside, encountering a variety of situations and interesting Chicago locales along the way. Fights with go-gangers or wiz-gangers, needing to fast-talk their way past a"toll booth", a foray into the CZ, that sort of thing. Basically a set of scenes only really connected by the need to deliver the item or items to all these crazy places.

That's the skeleton. Ideas for the meat?

Isn't Calumet City to Downtown Chicago pretty much the big final chase scene from Blues Brothers? I sense some awesome coming on.

Arriving at the warehouse where they're supposed to pick up the package, the runners find a stolen pickup truck rammed through the front gate and a bunch of dead and wounded guards saying XX gang just hit 'em a couple of minute ago and got away with a pretty big crate.

You can complicate it even further by having KE show up at that moment, finding the runners at the crime scene and taking the safe approach. Well, safe for them, anyway: shoot first, file reports later.

Chase scene fleeing from the cops (make sure to make it understood that fleeing is an option, this isn't DnD where killing stuff is always the easiest answer), followed by tracking the gang and getting the package back. Still plenty of stuff could go wrong afterwards.

Oh boy. That is inspiring.

You could even throw out the plot device that the Mr Johnson isn't your usual 'guy in a chrome suit' corporate exec and make him/her a nun that needs medicine delivered to different orphanages across town. The money is still good, but the job itself is to help out people that the system wouldn't otherwise help, SINless, former addicts, homeless, etc.

Also, the inclusion of a Nun makes it closer to the plot of the Blues Brothers in that they are trying to get five thousand dollars together to give to 'The Penguin' to save the Orphanage they grew up in. Anything that makes it closer to The Blues Brothers will make it much more awesome.

Hmmm. Make the Penguin a menacingly stern Fixer who uses clubs...

It's a shame someone had to go and kill off the Street Preacher troll from Prime Runners.

Street Preacher should really be an archetype, I can't think of a game I've had where players don't come across somebody with a bible, eventually.
