I'm getting ready to start a short SR 5 game this weekend, so I've been poring over the PDF on my iPad (with Goodreader). It crashes, a lot. Unfortunately, I upgraded my 3rd gen iPad to iOS 7 just before I started really reading the book on the iPad, so I can't tell if it's iOS 7, the PDF, Goodreader, or all of the above.
I don't have a physical copy of the book yet, so the PDF is going to be the book, and having it crash when I'm trying to flip to some page is going to be really frustrating. So I thought I'd ask: Has anyone else been having problems with the PDF on an iPad? If not, what software do you use?
Thanks.

I've noticed issues w/ Goodreader since updating to iOS7. While I haven't had crashing issues, definitely having some rendering issues when first opening up PDFs (all PDFs, not just CGL). Prior to this, no issues at all w/ SR5 while using Goodreader.

I was using my copy last night in my game and it was having serious rendering issues, but it seems to not be isolated to just the fifth edition book but other books I have as well. I moved it over to iBooks and it works fine! I just don't like using iBooks for game sessions. Hope it gets fixed soon as it seems to be a good reader problem.

I used my SR5 PDF with goodreader heavily before IoS 7 with no problems and since I went to IoS 7 it crashes all the time as do many other PDF's and even text documents. This is an IoS 7 issue not really a problem the pdf products

All my game PDF 's were doing this.
Go into settings and choose slower render engine, stl having occasional random crash but rendering speed back to normal.

Interesting...thanks for this.

Goodreader, iPad 2, and iOS 6 still (can't upgrade yet due to MDM breaking with iOS7).
No crashes here.

@Prime Mover - thanks for the tip...working much better now. Greatly appreciated!

Turning off the Higher Quality Images seems to have helped, too. Since doing that and switching off the faster rendering, it's been stable. I also found a forum post that said they are aware of the issue and working on a fix.
It was crashing on GURPS PDF, which are about as small & fast as gaming PDFs get.

That's good to hear and thanks prime for the tip.

iOS7 has been a nightmare if it didn't come native to the device. I work for at&t and deal with three or four people a day that are having issues if they did the update. (three or four people doesn't sound like a lot at first but it's a small town and we typically only get 50 people coming into the store a day...)

yep. Since I upgraded to iOS 7 on my ipad mini, goodreader for me has been having issues of open a PDF and its just a gray screen. I have to put my finger on the screen and wiggle it a bit, and the PDF shows up and then acts fine for the entire book. Once close it or load up another PDF, have to do the same.

To address the iOS7 issues with Goodreader, turn off the "Pre-cache adjacent pages" option. Irony of ironies, the myriad changes in iOS7 have meant that reading PDFs in Goodreader is the only thing that I use my iPad for.

Excellent. Thank you. I will try this ASAP.

I'm fairly confident that the issue is with GoodReader IN ios7. Goodreader was a little unstable off and on through the releases, but it got really bad with ios7.
I agree turning off pre-caching helps: GR > Settings > Viewing PDF files > Pre-cache adjacent pages = OFF
But, either way GR is quite slow now. They are supposedly working on an update. Until then, I'm actually just using iBooks for the PDF.
Hope that helps,

I just upgraded from a first gen iPad to an iPad Air and I can confirm that turning pre-cacheing off in Good Reader helps that weird gray page issue. It might just be the new hardware, but it doesn't seem too slow after that. Having been used to the old one though, I'm not sure how much faster it's supposed to be.

My last ipad and iOS7 took a flight out of a helicopter... wuth out a parachute. I never liked Apple products to start with, and I am sure the bears around kitimat have been equally unhappy with the ipad as well....

Guess that's one way to make applesauce :) Have you replaced it yet?
I'm currently using PDF Expert, as Goodreader is pretty buggy with iOS 7 and doesn't sync as nicely with Googlr Drive.

Replaced it with an Asus tablet. For $400 LESS, it runs all my PDFs and industrial tech programs.... something the Ipad would never do...

That's interesting...thanks. I'm kinda holding out for the next gen 10" Nexus...will likely pass my iPad along to the kids.
