Title: Play-by-Play (rules clarification/admission)
Post by: Nightshade on <06-17-14/0222:38>

(I've almost certainly posted this in the wrong forum, so if the moderator wants to move the thread: please do so. The main reason why I posted here was because I wasn't sure if I was allowed to post in the Play-by-Post forum)

This post has almost exclusively to do with the "Play-by-Post" forum. If you are not interested in that, read no further.

Basically
I'm available as GM

My Goal: Having fun while learning English.
I am not a native English speaker. I consider my English to be passable, but I'm dabbling with the idea of becoming an author. I need to get my English up to snuff though, so if you see any idiom, style or grammar errors in my posts, please PM/inform me.

My Experience
I've been role-playing for 15+ years, game-mastering for 12+ years and have been playing shadowrun for roughly 9 of those years. I've participated in 5 and have run 2 forum based games. (Though I took a break from them 3 years ago)

Regarding Ruleset:
While I have the 5th edition rule book I've only skimmed it, and have never run a game with it so I would really, really prefer 4th edition. (Though I have a 3rd edition rulebook lying around somewhere, if anybody is interested)

Plot Ideas
I have several, (some of them actually contain character generation with 300 or 500 BP) but I'm kind of up for anything. What I'm mostly looking for is a short adventure with 3-5 players where I can also practice character and location describing.

Great stuff. I always liked 4th and 5th is pretty decent too.
I like playing techie characters, usually riggers or decker so i'd like to apply for a slot in your game.
Where you thinking of basing the game?

Hey Csjarrat, welcome aboard.

Again regarding edition:
I would really, really prefer to play 4th edition. The only way somebody could convince me to play 5th edition, is to demonstrate that there are absolutely no players available for 4th edition. Honestly, if 4th edition isn’t an option, I'd really rather play 3rd edition since I at least participated in some games of it  :(.

Regarding location:
I'd leave it up to the players. I'd prefer not play is the most notorious locations (like Seattle), since I'm not fully up to speed on the story lines and I'd rather not disrupt any ongoing campaigns.

4th is fine with me, I GM a 4e game on here myself so am pretty familiar with the ruleset.
i started with 3rd and still have the books but have forgotten pretty much all of it lol!
I'm easy for settings tbh, international would be cool if you don't want to step on the toes of the established lore and just run your own story

Hi Nightshade,

I've only played 5e, but own the 4e book and would be down for learning if you can bear with me while we go. (I pick up systems pretty quick, so it shouldn't be too bad.)

An international setting would be interesting. Perhaps wherever you're located, even.

As for character, it would probably depend on setting. Probably Street Samurai of some sort, just to keep things fairly straightforward on my first try with 4e. I could delve into mage/face if we need it, but I'd like to avoid the matrix rules.

NOTE: As far as posting in the wrong forum goes, you're right, the "Play By Post" forum wasn't the right place to go. This should have gone in the "Looking for Group" forum instead. No worries, though.

== Description ==
A relatively slight dwarf with auburn hair and a cheeky demenour,

== Background ==
He loves all things motorsport and wanted to follow his father into the motor trade and set up his own racing team. Reality wasn't so kind though and the family garage was run out of business by the Mitsuhama motorcar division who setup shop across the road.
With no real income from the handyman jobs he had to take on, the family had to sell up and move on.
Roy attended engineering college for a couple of years but landed work as a stunt driver for a film company for 5 years, earning a name for himself briefly before an encounter with an "interesting" character who fitted him up with his first Shadowrun as a wheelman.
Since then he's worked the shadows for about a year, employing his driving skills and his piloting skills to pay his bills.

I'm going to hold off on making anything until Nightshade confirms BP.

...and also that I'm in the game in the first place. :)

I would love to play a Mage or shaman I have 4th edition rules but will have to read up on making a character I only have 5th edition rolled up currently. I am sure CJ will help me with questions

@ve4grm
Glad to have you- As far as I heard the 4th and 5th edition are pretty similar, although like you said, I'd advise against playing a Hacker or other Matrix type since that category received the most changes. A fighter type would do nicely.

@Csjarrat
I skimmed your character write-up and there was nothing too outlandish and a rigger seems like a good Idea for the setting I'm about to propose, though you might want to modify him a little. Some things that stood out:

* Those comlink stats seem a bit high; I thought you were only allowed up to a rating 5 at the start.
* Why do you have Contact Lenses and a monocle? (Not that you can't, just curious)

@BP and background
Since nobody proposed or showed interest in anything non standard we'll go for with the 400 BP. At the moment I'm thinking of having a run set in the Indonesian archipelago with the character working security on a smuggling boat. The logical starting place then would be Hong Kong, but I'll take input from the players.

Edit: hi ericen. The group still lacks magical backup, so looks like you're in.

Post by: ve4grm on <06-19-14/0039:40>
@Nightshade - It's not so much a lack of interest in non-standard, but a lack of preference. If you have a non-standard game you wanted to run, I'm cool with that.

Hong Kong/Indonesia sounds cool. I'll read up a bit on the area, and make a sammie up over the next couple days.

Cool, it's o ly a draft so will be changing somethings around.
Monocle and contacts are because the avail limit for all the stuff I wanted was too high for a single device.
The only Commlink stat you can't get to 6 at the start is response (avail 18 iirc), everything else is fine.
The legal software is optimised by one rank to run on an R5 Commlink and the restricted software is all R5 so it can be made ergonomic due to avail ratings.
I'll shift some stuff around and get another draft up shortly

== Description ==
A relatively slight dwarf with auburn hair and a cheeky demenour,

== Background ==
Roy attended engineering college for a couple of years but landed work as a stunt driver for a film company for 5 years, earning a name for himself and touring internationaly briefly before an encounter with an "interesting" character who fitted him up with his first Shadowrun as a wheelman.
Since then he's worked the shadows for about a year, employing his driving skills and his piloting skills to pay his bills.
Ploughing his earnings into a career in the shadows, he's now running various smuggling routes into and out of Hong Kong alongside extractions, recon and wheelman work.

Dropped the non-lethal stealthy drone and shifted resources around to improve autosofts and buy in a boat for the campaign, added knowledge skills ( i assume the relevant language is cantonese?)
Also, where the vehicle sensors are underfilled, i've left them with their standard factory fitted sensors and just upgraded the main one's i'll use most

I'm kinda interested in a 4e game myself too. I've got a few ideas, depending on whats allowed in.

A quick rundown some  of the ideas..

Physical Adept - Faceless Man - A character who basically doesn't exist. He's bland, boring, there isn't any data on him and he just blends into any situation  like a shadow. Spy games has three powers I use for this guy..

Sword-Mage - a Mystic adept. uses a vibrosword and magics like Magic fingers and influence.

Clubber - A rather famous, or possibly infamous changeling character.

More stuff later.. sleep comes.

== Description ==
Of middling height the ork you see walking towards you has a smile on his face and seems to be in a good mood. He seems reasonably strong and healthy and carries himself with a confiedence you find strangely intimidating. But you also get the sense that hes the sort of person who counts when trouble comes calling.

== Background ==
Brent Houng was born to a SINles couple who, not knowing what to do with a ork child born to normal humans, gave him up to an orphange. Little did they know that the orphange was a front for a Triad group. they trained him to act like a counter sniper for some of their operations, but during a turf war with anotther Triad group all of his fellow members were killed before he was formally inducted.

== Concept ==
Counter Sniper/ Close Combat/ Recon specialist

Er... Hellion's character looks awfully close to how mine turned out...

There's only so many ways you can differentiate between two 20-something Ork Sammies specialized in Automatics, I suppose.

I'll post mine tonight, once I figure out how to spend my last 5000 nuyen.

It's not really a problem, as long as we don't step on each others' toes too much. I don't do much of the infiltration, for example, being more of a heavy-cyber tank-y build.

I just saw a cybered Ork with automatics and Triad contacts, and went "Wait a sec..." :)
If we can make sure we each have a distinct role, though, I'm cool with it.

Although, I suppose if your guy is only 1.65 cm tall, that would make him incredibly distinctive. An Ork under an inch high. I think that's a Distinctive Style right there.

Lol the mini ork of death.... That should really be 1.65 m or 165cm but of course me being the klutz I am somehow managed to stuff it up.....  I can probably make this guy over and change him into more of a  B&E guy...

@Csjarrat
Signal and response rating 6 are both availability 16 and the standard limit of 12 applies to my games (unless I made a specific ruling for that individual item, and you'll need a good reason for that). It's true that both System and Firewall can be bought at level 6, but System is limited by response so only the firewall level 6 is really useful.

Looked up the rules for vision enhancement sensors and see what you mean, guess I only played characters with cyber eyes before. ::)

@Hellion
I could use a fourth player. I like to keep my RL campaign to three players, but in a forum game the pace is slower allowing the GM to give each player equal attention. It also allows us to keep the game running if someone needs to take a break.

Regarding your character

I have no problem with you reworking your character to be more of an B&E specialist, but keep in mind that most of the run will take place on a ship or at least in a port.

@Character disposition (and Triskavanski)
Remember: you are going to be hired as security for a ship, so it makes sense to have two fighter types. At the moment we have a Rigger, a Mage, a fighter/tank and a fighter/frogman? That looks like a good team to me. It also means the game is full and I'm going to have to put you on the reserve list, sorry Triskavanski. You have some interesting character ideas, but they don't quite fit with the scenario.

@Hellion - That'd be cool. That way we'll each have a nice role. By the way, what is the Prejudice for your character?

.

My character:

Yu Jin-Tae, Ork Street Samurai:
Character Sheet: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1IscDrLmnmZjoCkNXYGaFc_ns5eYKeOmjiIO_8z93uKU/edit?usp=sharing

==Gear Notes==
Heavy cyber, but no cyberlimbs. Most visual indications of cybertech are orthoskin and cybereyes.
Main weapon will be the more-transportable SMG, with an AR for bigger jobs. Sport Rifle and Shotgun for utility use. Unarmed martial arts with bone lacing for when things get hairy.
Took a Yamaha Growler with Smart Wheels as a vehicle. Being set in Korea, Hong Kong, and Indonesia meant to me that a small, maneuverable vehicle that can traverse nearly any terrain would be the best choice. Also added a shielded smuggling compartment to stash my SMG.

== Description ==
A physically fit Korean Ork in his late 20s, Gisa has sharp features, minor lower tusks, and short black hair. He'd almost look like your average young Korean father, but carries himself with the bearing of a soldier, and moves with military precision.

== Background ==
Born outside of Seoul to a middle-class family, Jin-Tae joined the military at the age of 18 to fulfill his mandatory service, and found he was good at it. He spent 6 years under the military government as advanced, augmented infantry, before deciding he liked the job, but not the life, and moving into "security contracting", eventually landing a job as outside muscle for a minor lieutenant with the Hong Kong Triads. While he still does the occasional job for them, he has decided to branch out into the theoretically far more lucrative field of Shadowrunning.

After having reviewed a couple of characters I've got some observations and some questions:

Quote from: fictional "beginners adventure"
You make your way to the top of the building and exit onto the roof. It is a typical Seattle night: the light drizzle is darkening the asphalt rooftop to an almost pitch black color, but due to the light pollution bouncing back from the clouds it is actually light enough to easily find your way. A few hovercraft buzz above you, but you left most of the traffic and smog below you so the air smells refreshingly of rain and sea. A figure matching the description of your contact is standing a couple of yards away, backlit by the city.
Players: Oh, man. This is going to rock. My character is so cool!!!
You make your way over to him. Suddenly, a canister hiding unseen in the shadows of a chimney ruptures, filling the air with a foul smelling gas. Your contact collapses instantly. Being further away lets you get of easy. Each of you mark off 8 stun damage.
Players: Ahhh. We run for the door.
The inch-thick, obsidian steel vault door slams shut as the automated security systems detect a chemical attack. From the sound alone, you can tell that the reinforcing cylinders now sliding into place have to be at least as thick as a trolls thigh. At the same time every police and security drone in a five mile radius is now heading your way. Expect everything the least bit suspicious to be blanketed by heavy machine gun fire in about 1,7 seconds. What do you do?
Players: ...
What? This should be easy if you have stimpatches, gasmasks, ropes, grape gloves and up-to-date and impeccable SIN and licenses. You have those things, right?

There is a program called Chummer that creates a statblock output.

Its the reason why the BP is left off too. They could probably attach the files in a zip and place them here in the forums if you'd like

I have nothing on the SINer quality.

As for the gear, Shadowrun can kill you in a single combat turn. That 8 points of stun damage translates into a -2 to all actions at the very least. A point or two more, and you'll be knocking out characters. Lots of different situations come up as well, resulting in the need of highly modular gear.

As for the team one thing the team doesn't have is a decker or hacker.

After having reviewed a couple of characters I've got some observations and some questions:
  • Everybody seems to be using the same character template. Is there a thread somewhere that details how it should look?
  • Everybody leaving off their BP expenditures is making me kind of jumpy. Already had to reject one character and did a back-of-the-envelope calculation on another. He checked out, but you are making my job a lot harder.
  • Everyone of you is a SINer with a butload of licenses. Is taking the SINer flaw around here seen as easy BP? And do the GM's religiously monitor for licenses and then proceed to **** the players if they don't check out?
  • And everyone’s gear lists are long and detailed with a lot of tricked out weapons/armor/accessories/vehicles. Am I playing with a bunch of rules lawyers? Or are the adventures on this board so deadly that you shouldn't even bother showing up without the equivalent of a hardware store in your back pocket?

Ok, yeah. Some answers:

- Yeah, Chummer is a character generation program. As this was my first 4e character, and I didn't want to take too long to make, I decided to use it to make the character. Apparently so did everyone. I guess it's a common thing? It has a stat block output, which I copied once I saw others doing so.

My actual BP breakdown (which I didn't realize wasn't included, or that you'd be wanting to review them all in depth):
- Metatype: 20
- Attributes: 185
- Special Attributes: 10
- Positive Qualities: 25
- Negative Qualities: -35
- Contacts: 5
- Nuyen: 42
- Skill Groups: 40
- Active Skills: 102
- Martial Arts: 6

Total = 400
230 Nuyen remaining
Starting Nuyen = (3d6+2) * 50 = (12+2) * 50 = 700 Nuyen

.

- As far as being a SINner goes, I went for it because it made sense for the military background, given that Korea is a military government in SR (according to the info I found here (http://shadowrun.wikia.com/wiki/Korea) at least). I don't see it as easy BP, nor do I even know what would constitute easy BP in 4e. I've never actually played in an SR game yet (I've only run them), and have never encountered ID or license checks, but I figured it was a good idea to have them fake ones for the big things, just in case.

- As far as equipment goes, I didn't think I was that bad? I like my cybereyes to be nice and complete, and I took as much recoil compensation as I could find on my weapons just so that I wouldn't have to deal with it. I wanted to play a tank character, so I looked into what kind of armour could stack, and picked up some form-fitting and a helmet. For other gear I mostly have ammo, climbing gear, and some stim patches (which I have discovered can be useful through the tank character in my home 5e game).

The one place I'll admit I went crazy is that I tricked out the bike a bunch. As I mentioned above, I wanted something that could handle the narrow streets of Hong Kong, as well as rural Korea. I saw Smart Tires in Arsenal, and knew I had to have them so I could go over curbs, stairs, etc without issue. Smart Tires requires a Pilot upgrade, so I bought that. And I figured if I'm buying a Pilot system, I may as well equip it so it can drive itself, which required the Gyroscope system and some autosofts. I threw on the smuggling compartment just to have some storage.

There was no rules lawyering involved, nor any fear of adventures. Much of the detail that you see is just Chummer listing all the stuff every piece of equipment comes with, I think.

Ah, apologies on the system 6 avail. Chummer lists system 6 as avail 12 and 3 grand. It's def limited by response but you can always upgrade response after chargen to match. I'll read through faq to make sure it isn't a Chummer issue and fix it on the char sheet as needed.

Alright, so the more I read of the 4e rules, the less comfortable I feel jumping into a game with them at the moment. Having started on 5e, I'm having a bit of a hard time moving backwards right now.

As such, I'm going to step back, and open up my spot for someone else.

do we still have space for another player?

Since I'm stepping away, there might be? Up to Nightshade, of course.
