Title: Shiva arms as cyberware
Post by: PiXeL01 on <12-19-14/1012:17>
seeing the shiva arms for changelings (and metavariants) I was wondering why this isn't out as cyberware.
If they came out in 4th then why did they cost.
Cyberpunk had them so we need them too!
Would 2 essence be too much or too little?

There's no limit on cyberlimbs that says you can't attach 4 arms to your torso; just saying, at 4 Essence I would easily allow it as a GM, but remember that you'll have 3 off-hands, as only one will be your primary hand.

Unless you're ambidextrous....

Cyberware can /could only replace what You've already got. So If You're a Nartaki or a surgeling with 4 Arms (or Legs) You could replace them with Cyberams (or Legs)
but you could'nt add 2 more Arms or Legs (at least not in SR4A)
But maybe they change that in the Future SR5 Chromebook/Biotec Book ?
Me, I hope they don't change it.
Replacing existing Limbs is Ok.But (ImO) adding new Limbs appears to me a bit too Freaky for  SR5
Unless you're ambidextrous....
by SR4A RAW if You're ambidextrous and have 4 Arms you still have to buy ambidexrosity twice more (for each arm)
I think this Rule is stupid but its RAW in 4A
How is it now with SR5 ?

The quality allows you to take ambidextrous multiple times so I could imagine this could be allowed in this case as well.

The main problem is the way the brain is wired.  Unless there's been something extraordinary (i.e. the Changeling thing), human brains are not wired for more than four limbs.  You could possibly get away with doing a half-bod replacement, e.g. replacing at the hips, and run a quasi-rig for whatever implant (centaur, mermaid, etc.) you wanted there; the lower portion thus reacts as programmed from what your leg-impulses would say.  But the standard brain isn't wired for multiple-arm movements.

For some reason, I'm vaguely remembering a discussion about the Shiva arms and how researchers were looking for ways to attempt such an implantation into some norms.  Might have been Augmentation.

They weren't in SR4 afaik, but it can be houseruled. You probably want to make a player pay for each Cyberarm, have an even amount, and require them to also pay karma equal to Shiva Arms at the very least, to represent the training required to learn to control extra limbs.

Good idea.

Look into Run Faster for the Nartaki (maybe spelled wrong) arms for help with mechanics.

Then there's the Essence loss. Should you really lose it for limbs you didn't have to begin with?

Yes!

You don't loose essence from losing a body part (anymore). You lose essence from attaching an alien device to your body. An extra set of arms that your brain has no natural way of moving sound damn alien to me!
