There are quite a few weapons in Run & Gun that list a smartlink as one of the standard upgrades for the weapon. Does this mean that the weapon comes with a smartlink built in, but still needs a smartgun system, or should every use of "smartlink" just be replaced with "smartgun system"?
The errata wasn't clear on this.

Smartlinks go in your eyes (or glasses), so any reference to a weapon having a smartlink should be read as it having a smartgun system.

Can it go in an imaging scope?

It can actually. Image Scopes have a capacity of 1 (or maybe it was 3? I forget).
-
yep, they can go in a scope no problem as its an imaging enhancement and scopes have 3 capacity for those upgrade types.
this would only give the +1 dicepool bonus though, you'd need smartlink in your cybereyes or direct implant to retina for the +2

You can have a Smartlink in your imaging scope, but that does not make your weapon a Smart Gun. You need the Smart Gun System (internal or external) in order to utilize a Smartlink.
-
It does allow a mage that uses direct spells to still use a smartgun, though, without taking his glasses off or his contacts out or at least shutting them off.
-
It is pretty hilarious that you can put an external smartgun system adapter on a side rail, a smartlink in your optic and plug them into each other with a data cable and gain the same +1 Accuracy that you'd get for having the smartlink in your goggles.
-
It is, plus decker can't brick either system! That set up is great for those who need max/near max Essence, and can get the +1 dice other ways.

+1 dicepool, +2 accuracy and partially negates issues with wind iirc

+2 Accuracy, +1 die

it also gives both +1 to hit and +1 limit when you aim as opposed to picking one or the other without a smartlink

Awesome trick for the awakened actually.
Off topic - when did they remove the restriction on Smartlink and scopes? It used to be either one benefit or the other (yes, I know. My age is showing)
-
Speaking of off topic....someone here mentioned sidemounts....
While Run&Gun mentions sidemounts, it never states what can go in it...or at least I'm not seeing it.
Which is possible as my memory is shot. It really is annoying to read something and forget it 5 minutes later.
And can a weapon like the Silvergun that has an integral silencer be modified to get an internal smartlink? What about barrel modifications?

I think 3rd still had the rule that scopes cannot include a Smartlink
