I was just browsing the sample prices in run faster for various items and saw. . .
20¥ Prepaid Comlink (cheap)
100¥ Prepaid Comlink (good)
Considering thr core ruelebook has the metalink for 100¥ what would the cheap 20¥ one be/do and how does prepaid differ from the standard model?
-
Well, I'd interpret it as a rating 0 device that can't do anything but making and receiving calls in noiseless environments.
And you probably don't need a SIN to operate the prepaid devices.
-
basically a burn commlink
-
Now I can stop using Metalinks as burner phones, sweet!

I asked the same question and came to a similiar answer. I guess those a meant to be burners and they don't have a plan attached. Which, I figure out, makes up some of the costs of a rated comlink. I would give them the same functionalities as a Rating 1 comlink (including AR access), but maybe never have a decker/TM roll for getting marks etc. Plus no PAN available.

Which then brings up the question how long is it prepaid for? I'm thinking a month as that's the standard period of time. However I thought grid access was an extra as I recall something about deckers changing what one their accessing and there being varying prices from a free standard up to a premium can access any grid?

I figure "net access" is what is prepaid.
You go into a Stuffer Shack and buy a cheap commlink with "1 months worth of Emerald Grid access" or "NeoNet global grid access" or something like that. You pay 20 or 100 bucks, and you're good to go.
I wouldn't shoot nude selfies with them though, those things get hacked easier than the iCloud for sure...

Unless you want your nude selfies to be hacked and posted. For some reason.

How ELSE am I going to get my P2.0 score to spike up before the weekend?

Burner phones are awesome. Until your wife wonders why you have a second cellphone. It brought down Walter White, didn't it?

"No honey, I swear, its not like that. Truth is I'm a shadowrunner. I love you, I would never..."
And 5 minutes later the Aztechnology blood mage that was spying on you from the astral is losing his lunch. Ten minutes later he has a date with your widow.
Corps hath no fury like a woman scorned.

I have always assumed that these were just throw away, burner commlinks.
Unable to be upgraded, Lowest possible construction (no matter how shiny the outside looks), and only with the most limited functions available.
Basically these are your gas station cell phones of today. Good for people who can't afford a regular Commlink, Travellers to avoid LD charges, and criminal who don't want to leave an easy data trail to follow.
And for that, you get a device that can be used by just about anyone, with no security, and stats of 1s across the board. But still good enough to leave that harassing voice message to an unloved Senator :P
