I'm rereading the old Dragon Heart trilogy and in Clockwork Asylum they make it pretty clear that Damien Knight and David Gavilan are the same. My question is is thus cannon? Or is just considered rumor like so much else?
-
Yes. :P
-
And this is why you always ask questions one at a time (in other words, to avoid the ambiguous answer you're now going to have to ask a follow-up to).
Also, nice one, Patrick. Kudos :)
-
The answer is yes to both.
Knight is Gavilan and there is no evidence of it so its only rumor.
Or maybe Fastjack is Gavilan.
-
Fastjack was not, by his own admission, part of the Echo Mirage team, which included some of the best people and hackers he'd ever known. Galivan/Knight (obviously) was. While there is not enough proof for Knight to be conclusively and publically proven to be Galivan - by which we mean 'provable in a court of law' - there is enough evidence for the shadows to consider this absolutely true, and for those with connections to the shadows to be 'certain to the point of not needing further evidence'.
-
'Course now he has a insect-queen spirit in him so thus begins a new chapter in the w-o-nderful world of ARES! ;D
-
Queens and Mothers are always true-form.
-
Besides, wouldn't he need a sex change first?
-
No. As far as I know, while it tends to be firm in the mindset of players (and maybe in-world, too) that a Mother or Queen has to be summoned into a female body, it doesn't actually matter. That'd be like the spider wasp checking the gender of the spider it lays an egg in.

Definitely in-world too.
Insect shamans tend to prefer female vessels for nymphs, as the inhabitations tend to produce better results.
Since Queen/Mother spirits are transformed from "an already present (and highly honored) nymph spirit", it follows that Queen/Mother spirits will likely have been female vessels to begin with.
-
Like I said - doesn't actually matter, but there's the mindset ...
-
Also I don't remember seeing anything that Knight has become an insect host anywhere, just that he's authorized experiments done on them.

I wasn't addressing whether or not it mattered, rather I was making it clear what the in-setting view is as of Street Grimoire, seeing as you seemed unsure of this by your own "and maybe in-world, too" statement. It's more than just a player mindset, clearly.

I was reading somewhere [currently have 17 .pdf windows open and I dont think any of them is where I read it, maybe system failure] that Lucien Cross had know/ been keeping tabs on knight`s prior identity as a failsafe fallback blackmail plan. This leads me to believe at least one person Knew who knight was.
As for insect spirits, didnt Ares get nailed for experimenting with paracritter/insect spirit hybrids "For Security Purposes" as far back as 3rd ed?

Blood in the Boardroom, page 57. It was previously hinted at in Portfolio of a Dragon: Dunkelzahn's Secrets, page 60. Right now, I can't think of any other book in which that information would have featured.
-
I must`ve picked it up from the wiki then. Blood in the board room is one of the few books I dont own.
So did that info die with Lucien? Or did it get leaked in some way and/or is still sitting around on file somewhere?
-
A file ... a few people ... that sort of thing.
-
A file ... a few people ... that sort of thing.
Most likely few of those people are talking in the hopes to remain among the living as long as possible.
-
Or not. Seriously, at this point - 45 years later - it doesn't matter a copper ruble whether David Galivan became Damien Knight.
-
Indeed. At this point, the reason it hasn't been brought to light isn't that people are afraid of getting killed, but that there's no point.
Now, if some information could be brought together connecting Gavilan/Knight to, say, the creation of one of the AIs that was present during the Crash, and then weave that in with his current use of insect spirits, then that'd have legs.

Literally. Many, many legs. :D

Queen Spirits are always True Form?
Hmm... interesting...
