Title: Ral Partha Chaos Wars KS
Post by: cantrip on <05-01-15/1613:23>
Saw the Chaos Wars miniatures KS (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1050509756/ral-parthas-chaos-wars) on Catalyst's twitter feed awhile back. I've not gotten into miniatures other than a box of AD&D and SR back in the day. Slippery slope?

Don't think I'll be backing this one...sculpts just aren't all that compelling (for my tastes), though some of the monsters look pretty nice.

As far as a slippery slope...one can choose to spend a lot of money on minis if you get into a game system or two. But, with some common sense, not that much of a risk if you stick with RPGs.

I suppose just like anything! I never played, but I grew up in that era -- so quite a bit of nostalgia, which seems to be a big draw for at least some of the backers. I thought I might pick up some of the elemental add-ons and use them in my SR game down the road. Now if I was only good at painting...
I'm mainly considering it because I think my kids would like it in a few years and would be a fun family thing to work on together.  Well, you can include me as one of the kids too... :D

Can't think of a better reason to back a KS ;) In regards to the actual painting, the only thing I can say...you only get better by painting... ;D

Yeah - art always looks waaay better in my head!  ;)

I also made the mistake of checking out some how-to videos on youtube - Geez! They make it look so easy. I give absolute kudos to artists - I know it's a developed skill, but there are some really talented people out there!   :)

Also noticed many people are airbrushing - it that the way to go with miniatures? Or should a novice start out with brushes? I used to drybrush ceramics when I was little, so I got some experience...hmmm...maybe that is an avenue I could worth with....

Pretty sure that brush is still the "norm"...for me, I only use airbrushing for base coating and priming, unless the piece is large enough (ie tank or aircraft). I don't have the skill to use an airbrush for most 28mm minis...but there are some who do and their work is phenomenal.
