Title: Weapon Commlink or Weapon Form Factor???
Post by: I_AM_ZHOUL!!! on <06-02-15/0116:50>
I was browsing around in Data Trails and just realized this. Do these new rules for a Weapon Form Factor supersede the rules for Weapon Commlinks in Run & Gun??? If they do that sucks but if they don't they suck. Weapon Commlink was Availability (-) Cost (¥200) but the Weapon Form is Availability  (+4R) Cost (+50%). Clearly sticking a Commlink into a Gun is substantially better than getting a Commlink that looks like a gun.

To be honest never understood why you would need a commlink on your weapon  or why its such a good idea

You'd get the DR x2 of the Commlink instead of the 2 + 2 of the Smartgun DR. Basically make it harder to brick your Smartgun... maybe that's why they redid it to remove the confusion in that the gun itself is the Commlink instead of saying that the Smartgun uses the Commlinks score. At least that's how we've always used the Weapon Commlink... cause like you said, why else do it???

but cant you slave your gun and smartlink to your commlink? I mean if your gun is the commlink then that means that when you go through a mad they find your gun and hand it over your commlinkless unless you have a back up

Slaving your gun to your commlink means a cable or a wireless connection. It also implies that all your other devices are equally vulnerable. A weapon commlink means your gun is independent of all other systems. Redundancy can be a life saver.

However, you need to connect your gun to your smartlink to actually use its bonuses, so the system collapses on itself for everything but laser sights with wireless turned off and the good old talking gun schtick.

Smartgun systems hold a camera with 1 capacity, and can be equipped with a smartlink. Then you just need a wired or wireless connection to it.

If your gun is wireless OFF then it will be invisible on he matrix and will be immune to hacks.
In this case there is no need to slave it.... ;)
You also don't get the wireless bonuses.
If your wireless OFF gun is a smartgun and is connected to your smartlink with a wire then you can see the camera live feed to shoot around corners and you can see all the the information that game mechanic wise grant you +2 accuracy. If you don't wear your smartgoggles with your smartlink in (or because your smartlink is in the camera on your wireless OFF weapon) then you probably don't get to fire around corners and you probably don't get +2 accuracy either.

If your gun is wireless ON then it can be hacked from the matrix.
In this case your gun will get higher attributes when defending if you slave it to a master device that have higher attributes.
If your gun is wireless ON and you have DNI then you eject and change firing mode as free actions (doesn't have to be a smartgun or smartlink for this....)
If your wireless gun is a smartgun, is wireless connected to your smartlink you have DNI then you also get to shoot around corners by using the live feed on the on-board camera, get all the information that grant you +2 accuracy, a positive dice pool modifier, compensate for wind and both take aim bonuses. In this case your brain is connected to the wireless enabled gun and the wireless enabled link by DNI so you probably don't need to actually wear your smartgoggles and the smartlink can probably actually be located in your camera on the weapon.
