We all know that more and more life in the shadows is relying on who you know, as much as what you can do. So I thought it would be prudent to discuss what kind of people you need to contact for specific services. Obviously, if you want someone dead, a Sammie will do the trick, but whar if you need a low altitude drop into restricted territory. How about a recombent algorithum to encrypt your data store? Let's say Lone Star is hot out to find you and you need those nasty warrents to go away. The Ghostbusters ain't got shit when it come to a Yakuza hit squad or a V-chopper loaded for troll, when the lead starts whistling in your ears.
So the question stands: Who you gonna call (when it hits the fan)?

Fixer ~ For work
Fense ~ To sell the things that just fell from those people, trucks, ect., ect.
The Gun_Nut ~ when I need Guns
Face ~ the one you call efore the Star or other law inforcement group comes looking learn to grease the right palms
Mafia ~ if you have a Yak issue (yes this can start wars so what I bet theres work in it.)
Yak ~ If you have a Mafia issue (yes this can start wars so what I bet theres work in it.)
Triad ~ If your screwed by both the Mafia and Yaks (yes this can start wars so what I bet theres work in it.)
Hacker ~ to secure your data, money, what ever ya got thats on the net.
Shaman ~ well for alot of stuff but really good if your having spirit troubles. (the Ghostbusters got nada on her)
Rigger ~ to get that air drop or ride ya need.
I'll check the Little Black Book and see if there is others I would call.
-
Gotta love a crazy rigger for artillery on demand. Get in with the Red Hot Nukes gang and see if you can't phone in an Ares Heimdall missile strike from 18 klicks out. Sure it costs a pretty penny, but sometimes a body just needs to vape a hardened target or get a real flashy distraction. All in the space of 20-something seconds. Paint up your target and let 'em fly.
Alternately, there's always the spirit marm. Again, bound spirits don't come cheap, but if the mage knows your aura, he can astral to your location at around 1 km/s and tear things up.
Of course, combat is only one dimension of how a contact can help a buddy out, but backup on demand can save your life for sure.
-
Don't forget a good lawyer. Sometimes you need that contact inside the system in order to get you out.
-
Always want a private eye or bounty hunter for those that don't want to be found.
Also a Bartender/Bouncer that way you always have an ear on the streets.
And a bum that way he can take the fall for you and get himself out off the streets.

Send Lawyers, Guns, and Money we're going down!

Cab drivers. Can't know enough cab drivers.
-
YO! Charley...
Huh you call me? Where ya need to go chummer??
-
Street Doc- Knowing my luck with injuries, this guy is on speed dial and I will even mark his kids/grandkids B-day's on a calendar for cards and gifts....I collect injuries like some people collect stamps!
-
A corrupt cop is always good, for a bunch of reason i think i don't need to mention 8)

Cabs are great for shadowing someone by car. Nobody gives a rats ass about a cab. Also great for short-time observations. And cabbies who operate in the lower C areas tend to have pretty well armored cars.
Plus they know every watering hole in their respective area and are the best listeners after Barkeepers on this planet. Never underestimate the comfort of knowing someone who listens to you if a day goes sour.

See now it's things like this where I'm not to sure I fit in Shadowrun. At heart I'm a hero. I will do the wrong thing for the right reason (See Mal from Firefly), 'If you're trying to kill me I have the right to kill you back.'
However I don't want to think the cop I have as a contact is corrupt. Willing to go outside 'the system' to get the bad guy yes. I will not have a Cop on the take as a contact though. Anybody remember Luke Cage(Power Man) & Iron Fist? They were Heroes for Hire. Thta's how I see my Runners.

this is wherebyou get it all wrong. Shadowrunners can be good guys too. Just go hooding. Plus the system is so corrupt, anything you do in comparison makes you look like a hero. There are plenty if jobs out there where people need to have injustice straighten out.

Yeah. That's my bag right there.

Well I know shadowrunners can be good guys, and my players do it that way also (even me as a player), just saying that a corrupt cop can be a contact and a regular beat cop can also be one, just depends of the vibe you give and the runs you've done. Because you don't want the be the target of your "good" cop contact just because he consider you as a "real" criminal depending which run you did(because most shadowrunners are considered criminals for a major part of the SIN society). Gotta think about that, runners sometime injure a lot a corporate security(from Lone Star, Knight Errant to Red Samurai), just because they are doing their jobs, and that they are in your way, are they bad guys? you still kill them, does that make you a bad guy? maybe not, but people are still going to consider you are most of the time (mostly the people you are shooting at XD). All that only to say, depending on your runners and on the kind of missions you do, sometime you need to choose an asshole for contact, you don't always have the luxury to choose exactly who your contact's going to be. You also can't forget the fact that the Lone Star, back in the days they were doing security for Seattle, were known to be a pretty corrupted bunch.
I do prefer to play "good" shadowrunners ;D

If a corrupt cop gets paid by someone else besides his employer to do some good... whats the harm in him being corrupt? :)

Well it's pretty much what I told myself, because even if the cop is not corrupt, if he deals with shadowrunners and that his fellow cops discover that, he will be considered as corrupted, since he is dealing with what society consider to be criminals. So the only thing important is that the contact is being used in a good way.

For places where I list groups, I list them because groups have members. One could consider the connection rating the amount of influence that person has within that group. For example, an organized crime connection could be anywhere from a hitman to a small boss to an accountant. I can break some of these out if you want, but the list was getting a bit long. I may re-edit this later. I think I trimmed too much stuff.
Note that there is also some overlap. An identity broker has some overlap with a forger and a hacker, for example. Smuggling appears twice.
Digital
Whistler (Sneakers): Breaker of codes. Tapping of data.
Mr Universe (Serenity): Gatherer of public information. Facial recognition, Essential Elements of Friendly Information.
Alec Hardison (Leverage): Hacker, editor of someone else's data.
Data Haven
Pirate Network
Astral
Egg Shen (Big Trouble in Little China): Astral Knowledge Broker, even if it doesn't make any sense.
Talismonger
Magical Group or Society
Conventional Information
Fixer
Mr. Johnson
Organized Crime
Bartender/cop/ganger/informant: Ear to the street.
Mozzy (White Collar) or Whistler (Sneakers) or Lone Gunmen (X-files): Someone who can see the FNORDs.
Exit Strategy
Body Smuggler; (Also good for entrance strategy when you need to get to a new location)
Real Estate Agent: (Including zero notice short term rentals at high rates)
Corrupt Cop: "You've just tripped the silent alarm. And this time pay attention to who you're shooting at."
Identity Broker: When you need a SIN that isn't deadly.
Supply Chain (usually incoming, sometimes outgoing)
Smuggler
Ex-Supply Sergent
Fence
Jack Jeebs (Men in Black)
Chop Shop
Tailor
Forger
Edited to fix mistake on Moz. Too much editing

looks like a pretty good list to me ;D

Reporters are nice contacts to. Lots of sleeze and a great way to make sure you stay out of the spotl ight.
-
Never forget aides personal and for groups. Sometimes you just have to "persuade" them.
-
One of the best way to get contacts of various types I have found over the years is the "favor for favor" system. Sometimes, its more profitable than nuyen.
Scan this, I used to know this Chinese restraunt owner back home who I did a few favors for that included getting his daughter left alone by the local Triads...don't ask. Anyway, now I eat for free (with a good tip, never abuse your contacts) and it's amazing the information that gets passed on in places like that.

I am going to do favors for restraunts from now on. Be great when work slows down and bounty hunting doesn't turn out right.

@1 Mozzy is from white collar ;D good to know someone else watches leverage too

Contacts are fun. My group likes to create really colorful characters for their contacts and frequently make elaborate backgrounds for them. My three favorite contacts my group has are Sergei the exuberant Russian arms smuggling troll, Pappa Sweet the effeminate Huggy Bear-esque pimp, and Gary the flamboyantly gay knife-wielding joyboy. They amuse me to no end.

Looks like a fun bunch, I'm sure they must create some funny moments.
-
You have no idea. Those are just the contacts too. The characters all tend to be either unhinged, psychotic, or just plain weird.

Which one were you? ;)

Sometimes one, sometimes none, sometimes all three. ;D

now if you're playing all three, and they're one person...does that mean they have to have a higher contact rating?
-

Depends on how I distribute their skills among their different personalities.
-
lol that'd be great, all the runners' contacts are the same person, just different personalities...
-
"No, I want to speak to Frankie! The Arms Dealer! Is he in there?!?"
-
Hell, if I rigged him up with the right cyber and bioware he could even change appearances to match the personality.
-
"Frankie isn't here right now, leave a message at the beep..."...Stupid internal answering machines...how the hell do these things work a*beep*gain ...damnit...did it just beep? uuuh hello?...helllooooo? frankie? you there? I need a new Predator quick...grr...forget it...
-
So he's a cyborg with multiple CCUs installed?
-
hmm...maybe...i'd have to look into how i would go about building him...and her as it were
-
Oh jeez... Just had a epiphany. A Cyborg with 3 brains in the jar...
Edit: Don't mind me... I'm five minutes behind tonight...
-
Three brains in one body. As if cyborgs don't have enough mental problems already.
I wonder if there's a way to jury-rig a CCU into a cyberzombie......
-
so you're wanting ANOTHER person's brain into the cyberzomb's body creating the first multiple...you could try to....find a way to let it quick switch between brains too...like have charged battery packs and a program to run the muscles to pick up and attach another ccu...
-
And you thought cyberzombies were messed up before.
-
definition of internal conflict...

Mmmmm, wonder how effective it will be?

Just take a hint from Eclipse Phase and learn how to make normal people into AIs. Then put them inside your internal commlink. Then get something that lets you carry another AI inside your head. Then make the body a cyberzombie and a biodrone for one of the two AIs. Have fun!
