Title: Wheels - Missions Rigger
Post by: falar on <11-01-15/1153:06>
Wheels

Wheels is a cautious rigger who's been living in and out of the Containment Zone for many years, both as a 'runner and a smuggler. He's addicted to a selection of drugs, but only buys pharmaceutical grade if he can help it. He's also well aware of the most cliche name for a rigger ever and is open to suggestions from his fellow 'runners.

He has a shock of blond hair that's normally spiked upwards and tends to wear a wifebeater under his armored jacket. When he's not wearing the armor (which is most times that he can help it), you can see an LED tattoo on one arm of a flaming yin-yang done in orange-red and dark-to-light-blue.

...question, How did you get such a nice layout to your post?

Lots of work. :)

I work on support of a large medical software company's web products, so I understand the ins and outs of markup languages (HTML, XML, etc) pretty well. BBCode is just a simple markup language, so I used it and my knowledge of the HTML it probably produces to get what I wanted.

Here's the code though:

...thank you, done so.

Not much up on HTML formatting and such.  The last time I worked with any formatting code was over 20 years ago and that was for laying out  publications (such as journals and texts) for physical printing from digital sources.  Most of that was proprietary.

Is the fb-bumblebee missions legal? If it is, ditch all your other combat drones and grab a couple. It's vastly superior to all the other drones that it's not worth taking others for fighting. A couple of cheap recce drones are necessary. I'd also say you're probably a bit over invested in the cyber dept. An R3 rig with the optimisers and all is majorly overkill as an r2 rig is good enough for 99% of situations with a decent dicepool and edge works for the other 1%. You could downgrade and then put the cash into augs to buff your awful physical stats or get a pimped sports car so you don't have to drive an un-subtle APC all the time

I like almost everything about this build, unflinching purity of purpose, broad enough but specialized, the only thing I don't like is your negative qualities choices. That many addictions is very dangerous at this essence level, also Repeated use of the same quality is just boring, there are so many good qualities, find something else.

Yes, it's been legal for some time now.

Second switching to the FB-Bumblebee. Basically it is a super rotodrone, with free machinegun.
Can't say as much on rig rating. But yeah, physical stats are low and worse is you basically are just a super junky. There are far more interesting NQs than just addicted (mild, everything).
Title: Re: Wheels - Missions Rigger

Part of his cautious nature was to go for all legal choices of drones. Hence why there is no FB-Bumblebee or after-market weapons mounts. This will probably change over time, but it was pretty key to the character design, so it's not something I'll likely change. Although, with a quite solid explanation of why the FB-Bumblebee is better than the Steel Lynx (other than the 2 armor), I could be convinced to swap for it and stow it in the Troll Smuggling Compartment at most times.

The other key character trait was that he was a junky through and through. I originally had him on fewer drugs, but it suited his nature in my mind more to be mildly addicted to a bunch of stuff rather than very addicted to only a couple of things. The only thing I'd probably swap out is Psyche for one of the other addictions. None of the other 4, 5, 8 or 9 cost Negative Qualities really spoke to me. Although Asthma, Emotional Attachment (MCT Fly-Spy), Phobia (Snakes) could do okay. But I really like the addictions for his character design.

That said, with these drugs and buying pharmaceutical grade, there's little chance of becoming more addicted. Since these are functionally downtime rolls in Missions, I can buy hits and meet all thresholds.

  • Betameth - Addiction Threshold 2 versus 13 Pych/9 Phys
  • Betel - Can never increase over Mild
  • Zen - Addiction Threshold 0 versus 13 Psych
  • Aisa - Addiction Threshold 1 versus 13 Psych
  • Dreamchips - Addiction Threshold 1 versus 13 Psych

If you want to establish he's an addict then 2 drugs will makes the point with some extra, anything after that is just boring, and looks exploitative. Neg Qualities should always tell you something about a character, and should always be meaningful disadvantages.  All this one says to a GM is get him to OD really fast. There's no drama in it.

Biggest benefit for the Bee of doom beyond free weapon, software (granted rating 3 is crap), and better armor is that it is a rotodrone. Which greatly increase how it can engage the opposition, plus I am sure people will be will to give you free speakers to play Flight of the Valkyrie. Where as Lynx is a wheeled drone and vastly more limited on how it can engage the opposition, plus crap like stairs, have to use rope to get into run site, etc.

Being gear dependent on your FlySpy is far more interesting than super junky, especially one how can never get worse because of gaming the addiction rules. Besides, as a runner I don't want to bring a super junky as my rigger. Would rather have a goblin, and a Pathfinder style one at that!

FB bumblebee can fly up staircases and over walls. your wheeled tank drone can't do that and with your physical stats you sure as hell aren't lifting it or dragging it anywhere :-). It can scout out enemies from afar using elevation from flight, your wheeled drone can't do that either. the fact that it comes with a machine gun is a huge bonus as the weapon mount state you can only get the extra capacity of ammo storage when using belt fed weapons. Stoner M202 is belt fed so can use 500 rounds before needing a reload, the AK needs extended clip R2 mod from hard targets and still only gets about 60-70 rounds with that, but you're probably better off taking the shiawase monsoon as it has 120round capacity normally if you don't want to go belt-fed
Title: Re: Wheels - Missions Rigger
Post by: falar on <11-02-15/1203:30>
Let's see ... right now I have:

9 + 4 +4 + 4 +4. If I swap in Emotional Attachment (MCT Fly-Spy), then I'd have 5 +  4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4, but that's still the same number of things to be addicted to. Asthma could replace two - probably Aisa and Zen. A Mild Phobia of Trolls could be taken instead of Asthma. I might actually consider that.

So - I had to admit - I didn't think a roto drone could fly indoors. I had pictured it as too large to maneuver well and the maneuverability of the FB-Bumblebee is absolutely crap. If that's not the experience of most people, I'll probably have to revise that. As to the Steel Lynx not being able to take stairs - I had pictured that as a normal feature of a drone. If we have wheelchairs that can do stairs, combat and security drones should be able to do stairs.

If you are so concerned about legality, why don't you get a National SIN? Add a 10 hour per week dayjob as a taxi driver, get some debt for a bit more spending money and a reason to go running. A moderate allergy to something rare like strawberries and you are already at 20 bonus karma.

For stairs get an Aztech Crawler. Those are made for urban environments (and their pilot is a cut above the rest)

Day Job is not allowed for Missions, or he'd be a Courier. :) And I could actually see a National SIN. I'm pretty much set at needing the 25 points to balance my advantages and Karma spent on . Although I could rejuggle things a bit.

I generally hate Allergy as a quality. It always feels really cheesy to me.

Hypocrisy is alive and well in the Sixth World! :) Also, I've met more people addicted to multiple drugs than I've met with allergies.

Granted, I worked at a juvenile correctional facility ...

The belt fed/not belt fed has been clarified for mission. Weapon mounts retro fit the receiver of guns to use the weapon mounts ammo supply. No reloading needed until the mounts ammo is empty. Also means that any weapon from a drone/vehicle has to be reworked again to be used by metahuman hands.

good to know, hopefully we'll get something nice and solid in RAW in rigger 5 to put a final nail in it.
worth clarifying this with your GM as the heavy weapon mount is vastly more specific than the light weapon mount. it clearly says 500 rounds of belted ammo. the steel lynx is equipped with a heavy weapons mount and by RAW that means you're better off with an LMG/MMG than a cheap AR, obviously interpretations may vary at different tables

I honestly never thought how there could be a possible interpretation other than what Bull said. You mount it and basically it becomes a fully reworked form of the gun to fit into the mount and work with the expanded ammo feed.

That said - what this amusingly means is that you can mount a Winchester Model 2024 and have a Semi-Automatic Sporting Rifle that you can snipe for DAYS with and be fully legal. Crockett EBR is still the better gun for it, of course.

Why did you end up maxing all of the skills with the control rig booster? That is a rather huge dice pool for what becomes a low threshold.  Wouldn't it be better to add some social skills like ettiquette, negotiation, and/or con, so you aren't defaulting on those rolls?

Mainly to focus on my core job - to be a good rigger. I'm considering dropping some of those points out to pick up Navigation or other Rigger-ish skills.

LOL I hadn't even noticed the lack of navigation, but jumped in you are going to have some super epic dicepools with some small thresholds.  You're going to make John McClane look like a chump for "killing the helicopter with a car". :P

FWIW, since you pointed out the nanohives, all I have been doing is building riggers with them.  My favorite one so far used sum to ten, human with Meta: E Attribute: B Magic: E Skill: B Resources: A.

I'd say swap skills priority and attribute priority and see if you can make that work.  Spending 20 karma just to pump up two stats up to bad seems like a waste.  I like that he is addicted to illegal drugs, has illegal jobs, yet wants to have legal drones!  People aren't always logical, so it fits.

I actually wasn't aware that any of the drugs he was addicted to were illegal - but it looks like Betameth is. The rest are legal, or legal-with-a-license.

I did try swapping attributes and skills once, but it came out way too stretched on skills.

I am not familiar with the restrictions for Missions, but if Sum To Ten is a viable creation method, I have found it works really well for Human Riggers.

It's allowed, but it means you have to get special GM looksie at your character sheet and I don't really want to put someone through that hassle.

Also, Edge 5 is pretty rock star.

worth clarifying this with your GM as the heavy weapon mount is vastly more specific than the light weapon mount. it clearly says 500 rounds of belted ammo. the steel lynx is equipped with a heavy weapons mount and by RAW that means you're better off with an LMG/MMG than a cheap AR, obviously interpretations may vary at different tables

Crockett EBR is still the better gun for it, of course.
its because the heavy weapon mount specifically says belt-fed weapons and in 4e, it was super clear that they didn't automagically modify any and every gun to belt-fed FA weapons and handwaive it.
that's why any 4e rigger you see has an assault rifle or equivalent with x2 ammo feed modifications and 100 round drums plugged in to both.
5th is super vague about weapon mounts, so vets of the older system (me, for one) tend to play to the more specific rulings we're used to. the fact that the only FAQ/clarification is a forum post saying, "handwaive it" says a lot

Yeah, true, but as many have said, this isn't 4th ed. Sadly, these kinds of problems are all over this edition. Newest one being spellblades from hard target. At least Bull trys to help and overall is a bigger help in a lot of ways than other members of Catalyst. Especially since it looks like the errata threads don't really get anywhere. Best we get is either freelancers or missions guys.

The belt fed/not belt fed has been clarified for mission. Weapon mounts retro fit the receiver of guns to use the weapon mounts ammo supply. No reloading needed until the mounts ammo is empty. Also means that any weapon from a drone/vehicle has to be reworked again to be used by metahuman hands.
ya now only if there was rules about smartlink weapons tapped onto arms of walker drones, no real point in having a weapon mount on a transys office maid if all I want is a parashield dart pistol/rifle dont really need 250 rounds of narcojet darts :P

The idea, I believe, was that until drones are empty they don't reload. But, it was all badly written.

After all, although I know I have an ammo capacity of 250 rounds, I didn't fill my drones to capacity.

... Because I'm a gosh darned idiot who somehow futzed the price of bullets from 2 nuyen a bullet to 20 nuyen a bullet.

Lol, I have done that as well. Fun times when your MysAd has more ammo than the gun bunny.

I love the build, but with it being a Missions character - how are you going to get the Roadmaster to all the different locations ?  Missions tend to fly you all over the world.

Suspiciously optimal road-trips. :)
