Title: What! No Chicago Cubs?!!!!
Post by: kyoto kid on <11-15-15/1323:43>
...OK, as the current Missions Season takes place in Chicago and just saw the thread listing the major league sports teams in 2077 I'm aghast that  the Cubs, those perennial loveable losers, no longer play in the Friendly Confines of Wrigley Field. (?)  Wrigley Field's even outside the CZ while the White Sox play in the heart of it. Who in their right mind would go to a game in an area that still has a background radiation count and who knows what awakened horrors abound (and who cares about the Sox anyway, even when they were doing good, they couldn't sell the place out while Wrigley almost always was)?

...and then move them to Vancouver, where it rains a lot so they have to play indoors? I'm surprised the ghost of Old Man Wrigley isn't haunting and terrorising city officials day and night.

The Cermak Blast would pale in comparison to the upheaval Chicago would experience if the Cubbies left town.  That's like taking the Red Sox out of Boston or Yankees out of New York (Manhattan).

I wrote my Missions character PJ as being a die hard Cubs fan (didn't see this yet), boy, will she be disappointed.

Oh and no MLB team in Milwaukee, Again?  Where'd they go this time (The Braves left for Atlanta in 1966, and the Original Brewers of 1901 - 1902 are now the Baltimore Orioles in RL)?  Crikey I'd rather trade off the Bucks (who had only one good run when a fellow named Lew Alcindor played there more than a century beforehand) to get the Brewers back.  No Urban Brawl team there either?

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The business of professional sport is a cruel and indifferent one.

But the Wrigley Dome is in the CZ. Has been since Bug City.

Well, you could tweak the description to as being a die hard Fantasy Baseball Fan who loads up their teams with Cubs greats and is either talking endlessly about these uber-lineups or ducking the bookies who they owe money on for dropping 50 Large on that last league game.

(slotting too many Pete Rose personachips maybe? :P)

There was a chipped league in the early novels (specifically Wolf & Raven) where players slotted skillsofts to replicate the abilities of elite historical players. That was never fully explored subsequently, e.g. there's no list of league teams like there is for the NAL in Shadowbeat. But, frankly, there's a ton of sports stuff that hasn't been touched upon except briefly, if at all—drone football and other sports, chipped sports like above, Matrix and magical substitutes/simulations, etc. And, of course, there is the fantasy sports element as well.

To expand further upon the Cubs thing, the background from Shadowbeat describes the MLB system completely collapsing. The Cubs weren't even listed as a team in that book (nor were the Brewers, Twins, etc.), which was later superseded by Bug City and other references as well as Jason handing down an edict from on high when I made the list of pro franchises that the Cubs had to be on it—but he didn't specify that they had to remain in Chicago given the fate of their stadium and fanbase.

I have some background material on the move to Vancouver, but I have no idea if that'll ever come to light.

I was thinking of 'Designated Hitter' from Wolf & Raven as well, however since the Cubs were moved I didn't think KK would accept the team if they had been moved.

Hence the idea of following the Fantasy Baseball league.
With all the crazy levels of AR and Sims available, the Fantasy side can not only generate the numbers to determine the results of the games, but show them in play as well.

Seemed like a possible fit.

Would love to see all the fluff on the sports shakeup like the Vancouver move, but can see how that really wouldn't be much of a seller in general.

Maybe if Missions ever rolls around to Vancouver for a season there could be a section on it slipped in.

As a long time Cubs fan, the school I work at has six goats all ready to go to the friendly confines and break the curse.

...according to a "RL map" of Chicago and the description of the CZ limits, it is actually several blocks north of Belmont which is the northern edge of the CZ.

Umm....   I think you need to reread Bug City, specifically pg 56,

Quote from: Bug City, pg 56
Along Irving Park Road, Harlem Avenue, and most of 115th Street, the Wall follows a similar pattern; the government bulldozed
the buildings lining both sides of the streets and compressed the debris into barricades along the north edge of Irving Park
, the west
edge of Harlem, and the south edge of 115th, effectively denying the entire city access to those main thoroughfares.
Irving Park Road is several blocks north of Wrigley so the Dome is indeed within the CZ, though fairly close to it's original northern border.

It served as a safe haven for a lot of folks during the bug times thanks to heavy walls and the dome (Bug City pg 116-117 ) along with some KE troops who helped secure the place, including one then Captain Anne Ravenheart.

Now some of these borders of what they still consider 'the zone' may have moved a bit since Ares went in with the FAB to clean up the place which may be where the confusion over the borders in relation to Wrigley is coming from.

Sorry, I misstated. As of Sunday there are nine goats lined up here in Japan that are ready to go to Wrigley and break the curse! ;D

Bah! Leave the curse, I say! It was bad enough that the Red Sox managed to become something other than losers. We need the Cubs to continue filling that role, so that, no matter your team, you can look at them and say, "Well, at least we aren't the Cubs."

Now they're all dead, though. Advantage: Cubs.

*dons his White Sox 2005 Championship hat*

No, the Cubs will still find a way to screw up.

The Cubs could be playing a Little League team, and find a way to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.
