Title: Shadowrunner group names
Post by: Fenix on <12-16-15/1827:39>
So my group has been trying to come up with a name for their group, and the suggestions have been somewhat amusing (at least to me lol). Just out of curiosity, what kind of group names have you guys seen or used? Is there any criteria that, to you, is "essential" to a good team name? The only example I can think to give them is the Blackhearts mercenary group from one of the Sprawl Wilds adventures.

Wrecking Crew was a good canon name... But they died...

I've got an NPC prime runner crew called Balefire...otherwise I've not seen players bother with them often, then again I've only played pbp in the last 5+ years and that tends to be more transitory.

Do you even want a name? Isn't that counterproductive?

If you do, who should or shouldn't know about the name?
Johnson?
The media?
Law enforcement?
General public?
Organized crime?
Other runners?

Depending on who you want to impress or divert from you, the name might differ tremendously.
Personally I like to include a pun regardless of the intention behind the name.

A group name without individual names could build up it;s own street cred, public awareness and notoriety. Which can be great for attracting employers and enemies alike.

The Pink Mohawks would be a great name for some teams I've seen,
Death LLC for a wetwork group.
Snatch-m-Grab for item/person recovery teams.

oh, sorry, you probably want real names.

My group uses the Handle "Dead Man's Hand"  (a cookie for the first person who can actually tell me who, where and when it was first coined)
Simply because we have 2 awakened (a mage and an Adept), 2 mundanes (Rigger, Sammy), and a female (decker[techno?] - she's not letting on which... only the GM knows)

Group names are like street names or a fighter pilot's callsign. Yeah, you can claim one, but the best (and worst) ones are given to you, and those are the ones that everyone will remember.

What comes to mind is the Aces and Eights that Bill Hickok was holding when he was shot.  Not sure if that's true or just a legend.

That's chip truth. There's a lot of awesome stories like that from the old west.

You get 3/4 of a cookie!!
For a full cookie, what was the name of the town?

The hand was on fact 2 pair, Aces over eights. There is some debate over the 5th card, some claim it was the 2 of clubs, others claim it was the 10 of spades. However the card that is shown in the wax muesum is the Queen of hearts.... so it kinda fit our group if you go with that version.

The tales of the Old West are always a treat, especially when you  realize they pulled off stunts that SR execs would look on with admiration and envy.

http://www.sdhsf.org/news_events/monthly_history_article.html/title/april-2014-selecting-a-capital-location

tl;dr  Basically back when the Dakotas were one big territory there was a move to change the territory capital from Yankton (in what is South Dakota) to another city.

Knowing that Yankton and it's residents would fight this tooth and nail and according to the rules of the day the commission had to be in Yankton to vote on this, the commission came up with an ingenious plan.
So the commission handling this used meticulous timing of the speed of their train so they were able to vote on the matter as their train car passed through Yankton, nominating the officials and towns to be considered before heading off to review the various cities before making a final decision.

Needless to say this was bitterly contested and even went to the US Supreme Court, but a final decision was pre-empted by the Dakota territory being split up into the states we know today, which set off another round of infighting as now they were fighting for state capital locations, but that is another tale.

My favorite so far has been the crew that called themselves REPO, their rep & preferred job types were represented by the name very well.

One of the tables that I regularly run Missions for calls themselves The Gentleman's Club, and has quite a bit of pride in that identity ;)

We have one runner who is born rich, and famous. ::)
One who likes to live above his station. :P
And the other just followed suit.
We are now known as "The suits". ;D

I have to confess that I have had the players in my game encounter an NPC crew called Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem.

The team in the game I GM used to have a member who would get himself into serious trouble, and when talking his way out wouldn't work, he'd drop a grenade and run for it, shouting "Tweet tweet, motherf**kers!" at whoever might be pursuing.

That character has since died,  but the rest of the team call themselves the Road Runners in his honour.

Ran with a group for a brief time where all their characters were mimes save my own.

And yes, they did use silencers on their guns.

Lots of AR symbols and hand signs served pretty well for IC communication, some text would come across on the commlink though this was rare.

They didn't have a name of their own, but everyone else always referred to them as 'Those creepy f*****g mimes'

The current crew I have playing Shadowrun ended up being called "Shadowrunner Ink", as that was the name of the tattoo studio that they operated out of, which is also a cover for an illegal trid-porn studio in the basement.

So far, they've expanded into the storefront beside them to hold their industrial chip burner and electrical generator, stolen two shipping containers that one of the PCs and a NPC live out of (stacked one on top of the other), gained a very old Japanese guy who refuses to speak English and does some very traditional styles of tattooing, extracted an IT worker from a call centre to do their online sales, kidnapped a dwarf DJ who is always blitzed out of his head on whatever he can find to do their Audio/Visual editing, and dealt with a Johnson who paid them in part with real fish.

Recall there's the group "The Smoker's Club" in Shadowrun.  It's a wetwork group that both takes missions and gives them out.  Most recently lead by Riser, I believe it has some details in Hard Targets.

As Mirikon said though, group names are more likely to occur organically.  Especially if they're more street-level.
