Title: First Shadowrun Character
Post by: Reaper_Sandard on <12-24-15/1513:50>
This is my first character so i may have mess up a lot. My character is a mix of gunner/rigger to fit his backstory so no hacking here. I am using HeroLab.

EDIT: Ok, taking in all of the suggestions i revised my character, but first so everybody understand, my character is:
1) Not a wait in the van rigger, he's a Sniper Drone Rigger so expect very little or any Matrix Actions
2) The bilingual skill is chosen to fit his backstory
3) I am using HeroLab so if there are any rule contradictions ask the devs
4) This is not the final version as i am still learning the game

Welcome to the shadows! Your character looks quite interesting! This character has a lot of potential and a wide range of options. I suspect you may get advice to expand your dice pools but I think you'll have a good time as is. I think it's really neat that you're so focused in aircrafts, that could really pay off in the long run :)

Skills at character creation cannot have more than one specialization. Gunnery 3 is way too low, you're worse than the drone pilot when it comes to shooting, so why bother?
Also where is your control rig?

I would honestly just hang fire on the rigger stuff as it's just had a major expansion with its own splat book. It contains tons of new rules and vehicles so probably best to start learning the game with a simple character like a street Sam or face and then tackle the advanced vehicle rules with a rigger style character later.
Or, get a sports car, high end commlink and a lvl1 control rig and tag it onto another character role so you can at least do the wheelman aspect of the rigger role.

If you're going drones, you really need the new rules as the main book ones are shit and will die in one shot. The rule expansion gives them armour and allsorts

 .

Firearm SG 3 and 4 AGI and LOG 4 with Gunnery 3 means you can miss with every weapon in the game except exotics. Oh, and you can miss with exotics too, since you have no skill in those (which is better than wasting skill points and still missing).

Rigger with no control rig is not a rigger.

The camera in the smartgun system is rating 1 which means you can only add 1 vision enhancement to it. The drone on the other hand has a sensor array.

You're not a face so bilingual is 5 points to buy armorer and mechanic at 1 and that would let you add those 4 skill points to gunnery: Gunnery|Ballistic 6|+2. But only if you get a control rig.

1/3 of the time you go once-  too slow.

Shock pads are for humans.

Thanks everybody for their advice, but like i said before my character is a Gunner/Rigger, he mostly put his drones on auto pilot and use them as a distraction or support, and if he need to pilot them then there is the AR/VR option so no control rig is needed.
Also i am using herolab for character creation so if there are any rule contradiction i am not aware of it, and herolab updated a few day ago with the new book so no problem there Csjarrat.

How are you going to pilot your drones? For piloting them remotely you need a control rig to jump in. Without a control rig, you can drop pilot skills except ground craft and gunnery.
In AR/VR you can send orders to the dog brain, but you cannot pilot them without jumping in. The only way you can pilot them is manually, and it's impossible to drive manually a drone. So, if this is your choice fine, but do not waste points in Pilot skills (except ground craft for driving) and Gunnery.

From what i read from other threads, you can control drones remotely without the use of a control rig. Control rig just grants you the option to jump in to the drones.

Sure, but you cannot pilot them remotely. Control Device is the matrix action you're looking for, and has nothing to do with Pilot.
Also, you do not have electronic warfare, that is an important ability for a rigger.

Okay, I laughed. ;D

Shadowrun world is harsh and brutal place and that's why everyone need any initiative boost(wired reflexes are better for riggers imho), RCC is the butter on the bread for any rigger, also not having electronic warfare is asking for decker to geek you and your team with your drones.
Seriously, not having EW as rigger is like being cute girl wearing miniskirt and moving through slums at the midnight.

On the edited character: you still cannot have more than one specialization on a single skill at character creation, you still miss Electronic Warfare. You should probably buy a van for all those drone: how would you get to a lovation without drawing attention? Especially for the illegal Steel lynx. Your drones all lack manouvering autosofts and EW or Clearsight: if they
have to spot someone they roll 6 dices, minus modifiers, and if you issue an order more complex than, say, a single sentence, they will probably get confused (ie "follow that guy in the black suit and shoot him down" should be a thresold 2 test, which your drones would attempt with 3 dices). The RCC is doing not much more than a DR 6 commlink if you do not use programs and share autosofts. What is pilot aircraft 6 doing for you character? You could go with 3-4 and a specialization.

Pilot Groundcraft| Wheeled 4|+2
Pilot Aircraft|Remote Controlled 4|+2
Electronic Warfare|Sensors 5|+2

instead of

Pilot Groundcraft 6
Pilot Aircraft 6
Perception 4

You should be using the sensors to perceive.
A large drone can have a sensor array of 5.
EW+LOG will consistently get more hits than Perception+INT for this character.

How do I use EW to defend against attacks from Decker?
Also would it better to get EW as a skill or as an autosoft, What's the difference?
Title: Re: First Shadowrun Character

EW as software means the dron is making an EW check using it's sensor rather than you using your EW skill (which is probably better) with the drones sensor.

You can create noise with EW which is a negative to the Deckers Matrix DPs. If you have an RCC it's noise reduction is actually a DP and limit bonus to the EW check. And if you run Smoke and Mirrors on your RCC it's more noise. You can get a pretty ridiculous level of noise...so much so that even using your RCC set just for noise reduction might not cancel all the noise.
