...one of the things I notices is that for the Phobia quality there are very few examples.
For a character I'm running in the Chicago Missions I took Claustrophobia as Uncommon with a Mild effect. At the table I was told that it would actually be a Common Phobia which would then break the 25 karma limit. The character already has 20 points in negative qualities, all that relate to her and her background:
- Distinctive Style - Used in place of Neoteny (which is disallowed in Missions play because it's SURGE related) Basically she's young looking for her age and expresses herself like a young girl. (5K)
- Signature - She leaves a specific playing card anytime she blows something up. (10K)
- Blighted 6 Months - She lived a good part of her life in a war zone where chemical, biological, and tactical nuclear weapons were used. (5K)
The basis of the character is she's a child soldier who was a member of the resistance and had an uncanny knack for using explosives (took after her late father who was one of Europe's foremost pyrotechnicians before the war). She is also a virtuoso musician (actually allocated points to Performance) and was a child prodigy before the war however is unable to perform in front of an audience. due to the trauma of losing her family and many friends (her country was invaded only a couple days after a very successful solo recital she performed at the age of 10). She actually witnessed the deaths of her father mother and brother.
The character herself was also badly wounded in the attack and was taken to a secure and well concealed underground shelter (that used to be a command bunker during the Euro Wars) where she was taken care of and nursed back to health.
Basically I need something that would relate to what she went through from the time of the attack to when she was extracted seven years later and ended up in the UCAS. She is fiercely loyal to her country and to the cause of the resistance even though she is now 1,000s of kilometers away.
I'm just drawing a blank right now.
I cannot use Flashbacks (which granted, would be the most obvious) as it is disallowed in Missions as well.

...quite a comprehensive list. I actually first Googled "Phobias" and came up with similar results but it didn't help me to determine what would be common or uncommon (save for some really silly offbeat ones which most likely wouldn't come into play)
-
Also after reading your character I thought of this quality in Assassin SR5 book, thought it might fit.
MY COUNTRY, RIGHT OR
WRONG (COST: 4 KARMA)
Patriotism is the core of this assassins being. He serves his
country by doing his deadly job, and he knows his work
is justified because it helps the nation that he calls home.
Enemies both foreign and domestic must be dealt with so
the nations citizens can live in peace and security.
Advantages: Make a Willpower check at the beginning
of the characters Action Phase if he has taken a wound,
either Stun or Physical damage, since his last Action Phase,
with the threshold being equal to the number of wounds
taken in that time. Success on the roll means that the assassin
ignores all wound penalties. The assassin should
continue making rolls before each Action Phase, with
the threshold for the test growing with each wound; for
example, if a character makes a roll after sustaining two
wounds, then sustains two more wounds before his next
Action Phase, the threshold would be 4 for the next roll.
If one of these rolls fails, all wound penalties immediately
come into play and this advantage cannot be used until
the next combat.
Disadvantage: The idea of betraying his country in
even the smallest way, even for a greater good somewhere
down the line, is unthinkable to the assassin. He
must make a Charisma + Willpower check to act in a way
detrimental to his country, with the threshold based on
the severity of the offense: breaking into a military base
to steal weapons would call for a threshold of 1, while selling
classified materials to the enemy would call for a much
higher threshold. If the character fails the roll, they refuse
to perform the action and actively seek to stop anyone
they see attempting it.

I would ask if NBC (nuclear, biological, and chemical) weapons would qualify for uncommon.
Other options for a 5K negative would be allergy and SINner.
...I'd have to pass that by the Mission GM's The only trouble is both toxic chemicals and radiation are actually rather common in the CZ.where most of the runs take place.
Thought about an allergy but already have a couple characters with that quality. SINner (national) would be a stretch as theoretically the occupation governent believes she perished along with the rest of her family. The one way I could see it possibly working is, if instead of taxes, the 15% of her earnings is sent to either a group of sympathisers who funnel it through underground channels to aid the resistance or to an organisation which deals in humanitarian aid. to her downtrodden nation and its refugees abroad. I'll have to bounce this one off the group.

List of ALL SR5 Qualities
-
...ah, but My Country right or Wrong is a Posiitve Quality and while it does seem to fit to a point, she's already at her maximum there.
Agile Defender (3K)
Black Market Pipeline - Explosives (10K)
Jack of All Trades (2K)
Juryrigger (10K)
All these fit well with her background as a freedom fighter and saboteur.

Might Fit...
15pt Negative Quality
CODE OF HONOR:
NATIONALIST (COUNTRY)
This is a new form of Code of Honor (p. 79-80, SR5). The My
Country, Right or Wrong positive quality (p. 17, The Assassins
Primer) may be a more appropriate choice in some extreme cases.
Nationalist (Country): The character has an unwavering
belief in the rightness of his countrys policies, and seeks to
advance its agenda even if it would hinder his current goals.
The character loses 1 Karma per agent of the government
they kill, including contractors, or knowingly allow to be killed,
even in self-defense. Note that nationalism does not include
penalties for simply breaking the law, which can be justified
through mental contortions great and small.

Here are a few that might work..
and Please reply/comment to my posts on Crazy Character Concepts, I would like to keep it alive and would like for people to see/comment on some of mine.. Thanks ))
Dead Emotion
5pt Negative
Unable to feel a specific natural emotion
CF p. 57
Emotional Attachment
5pt Negative
-1 all tests if losing treasured item for 6 months
RF p. 154
Reduced (Sense) -Hearing maybe with all the explosives...
2 to 29
-2 Perception with chosen sense
RF p. 159
You should post your WHOLE character btw, might be a few things you missed.. You would be amazed what people on these forums catch that you might have missed..
-
Oh! oh@ oh!!!.. Loss of Confidence (Performance) Skill !! 10pt Negative, but GM would probably let you take as 5pt..
And I would probably get rid of Blighted... not sure GM would allow you to take anyways..
OR
Probably even better, get rid of Distinctive Style. Young Girl doesn't really fit Quality description in my opinion.
-
...Code of Honour is disallowed in Missions play. It also would put her 10 Karma beyond her Negative Qualities limit.
As she is a virtuoso musician I have difficulty with seeing how Dead Emotion would fit since music runs the gamut of emotions. Also not sure if this can be interpreted as a purely psychological instead of substance induced quality. I'll have to discuss this with the group.
Reduced Sense: Hearing. Considering what she's been though and the fact she uses explosives it would work, however again, just not sure how it would fit it with the fact she's a musician as mentioned above.
Emotional attachment is an interesting one and I thought about it. The two most treasured items she has are not really "runner gear". One is a plush toy lamb she had since she was a little girl, and the other, a locket necklace with images of her family (which is irreplaceable).
-

It didn't stop Ludwig van Beethoven though.

%$^#@! sorry didn't actually read whole description of Dead Emotion..
What about Loss of Confidence?.. because from your description of character that totally fits..
Can you post whole character so far?...

..Loss of Confidence is also not permitted in Missions..
Her Blighted quality was accepted as it is part of her background and it is not prohibited in Missions play.
According to the description of Distinctive Style in the Core rules:
A Character with the Distinctive Style quality has at least one aspect of his appearance, mannerism, or personality that makes him inconveniently memorable. Choices for Distinctive Style include, but are by no means limited to: tattoos that cannot be easily concealed, an accent or atypical manner of speaking...
Looking like and having the personality of a very mischievous young girl (with a strong Balkan accent and speaking in broken English) fits the quality pretty well. Particularly so when she does something like like giggling after firing off a grenade at a bunch of go gangers while saying "beeeeeg BADABOOM! ". I would call that "distinctive" and the Missions group agrees.
-

...very true.
-
The cost of the quality is based on how frequent you are exposed to your trigger, not how "common" it is in the general population or people with phobias.
Stasiphobia fear of standing or walking
Chronophobia fear of time and time moving forward
While certainly "uncommon", good luck with those two. :)
Arachnophobia could be classed "uncommon" if you run in a city, not so much in a rural campaign.
-
...the loss of confidence in her ability to perform before an audience really has no impact as the game is concerned. It is more background colour. Furthermore Loss of Confidence is yet one more quality that is disallowed.
Missions is pretty strict about what qualities are permitted, some are prohibited simply for game balance purposes (no SURGE for example) and story flow while others are not allowed as they would be difficult to work into the short time frame of a Missions run. (usually four to five "realtime" hours).
Getting late (early?) here so have to turn in. Will post the basics of the character tomorrow....err....later today when I wake up.

..or the CZ in Chicago. ;)
Yeah I want to stay away from ridiculous or frivolous ones like that. Seems the ones that make the most sense tend to fall more into the common rather than uncommon category.
One thing I can say, once Hard Targets is approved, all those characters with an Allergy to Silver are going to find life in the sprawl a bit more "exciting".
-
Impassive is a good one even if you are over your limit just take the 5k instead of 7 karma
-
I gave fear of flying to my troll brawler with anger issues. ;)
-
For the most part, Claustrophobia would probably be rather uncommon.
Reminds me...I kinda want to build a claustrophobic agoraphobe with acrophobia. 8)
-
....that's my thinking as there are different degrees and triggering conditions. Some people are fine in a room or car, but get unnerved in a lift or airliner cabin as they feel "sealed in" with no way out until the lift stops at their floor or the aeroplane finally taxis to the gate..
With Leela she was nearly buried alive when a building she was hiding in collapsed after it was hit by a rocket during the invasion. Moments beforehand, she saw her brother and mother get caught underneath a wall that gave way as they were trying to find cover in the panic. When her father went back to try and dig them out she saw him get cut down by an armed drone. Those were the last things she remembered until she woke up months later in the medical facility of the old underground bunker the resistance used as one of the operations bases.
Yeah, war is drek.
-
So first, Kyoto Kid, I have to ask why do you start every post with ellipses, also known as "..."? I'm just curious. ;)
Secondly, have you thought about having a fear of explosions, or something less defined like afraid of being trapped? It produces the same effect that you are looking for, but doesn't trigger as often. 8)
-

I always thought it was his/her grip. The way everyone has their own personal style. That's his/hers.
It's also like a pre-signature.

Some people have a "schtick". There was a guy around for a while that always used red text when he posted.
-
...yeah, I've had the "signature quality" for a long time, all the way back to the BBS days.

...considering she uses a grenade launcher and is a demolitionist, fear of explosions would sort of contradict the whole concept of the character. Oh, she has a healthy respect for what explosives can do, which is why she is very careful when handling and using them. Again she takes after her late father who was a pyrotechnician.(she managed to salvage his chip based library of fireworks formulas from her ruined home).
Now fear of being trapped I see as a good possibility. it also fits in with her fear of the Serbian "Blacksuits" (secret police) back when she was in Zagreb. When they showed up at your door, you were never seen again.
Is there a clinical name for that?
-
How about a fear of medical treatment, if after she woke up she discovered that the docs kept her in a medically induced coma while people she knew continued to die. She could feel guilty about not being able to help them, being in a coma and all, and have developed a fear of treatment because it could lead to her being incapacitated in a bed while others are in danger.

I'd like to point out that on the negative quality side of the house, there's no real problem with going over the 25 points limit. The downside is you'll have more than 25 points worth of negative qualities, but only gain 25 points of Karma.
You can take the quality, get the negative effects, but not gain more than the total karma. Unless missions took away that option, in which case, carry on.
-
For the Uncommon Phobia quality on my last few character builds, I went with spiders. *says in Christian BaleBatman voice* My characters should share my phobia.

It was argued very heatedly early on by some that it was 25 points of negative karma, period. Bull stated that you can go over 25 points of negative karma, but you couldn't gain more than 25 points of karma (as your post states). He also stated that you could take negative qualities that were forbbiden for use in Shadowrun Missions (such as one of the Code of Honor flavors), for roleplaying purposes, but again you couldn't get any karma for them. As far as I know that ruling is still in effect with Shadowrun Missions, unless there's been a recent change.

I Agree. I can't imagine any reasonable GM not letting you go over the negative quality limit, if you're not getting the bonus for it.

Maybe, maybe not. Wouldn't matter if there wasn't. The important part of phobias is, that you speak with your DM about them, so he can get an idea when/if he can trigger them.
EDIT: I found Cleithrophobia (http://phobias.about.com/od/phobiasatoh/a/Cleithrophobia.htm) on a quick google search.

Yeah, there's a clinical name for just about anything; the only question is can you pronounce it? ;D

At the table I was told that it would actually be a Common Phobia which would then break the 25 karma limit. The character already has 20 points in negative qualities, all that relate to her and her background:
Having it at uncommon would dictate how often it would come up. Common would be things like elevators, tight corridors, etc. Uncommon might constitute crawl spaces and other places you can't full stand, sit, or pass through without angling. So your character wouldn't want to crawl under a car, but would have no problem in a 10 X 10 room.
Just a thought.

Now fear of being trapped I see as a good possibility. it also fits in with her fear of the Serbian "Blacksuits" (secret police) back when she was in Zagreb. When they showed up at your door, you were never seen again.
Is there a clinical name for that?
Maybe, maybe not. Wouldn't matter if there wasn't. The important part of phobias is, that you speak with your DM about them, so he can get an idea when/if he can trigger them.
EDIT: I found Cleithrophobia (http://phobias.about.com/od/phobiasatoh/a/Cleithrophobia.htm) on a quick google search.
...thank you.

...one of the things I notices is that for the Phobia quality there are very few examples.
For a character I'm running in the Chicago Missions I took Claustrophobia as Uncommon with a Mild effect. At the table I was told that it would actually be a Common Phobia which would then break the 25 karma limit. The character already has 20 points in negative qualities, all that relate to her and her background:
Having it at uncommon would dictate how often it would come up. Common would be things like elevators, tight corridors, etc. Uncommon might constitute crawl spaces and other places you can't full stand, sit, or pass through without angling. So your character wouldn't want to crawl under a car, but would have no problem in a 10 X 10 room.
Just a thought.
...again that was my thinking that there are different levels of severity. I'll have to discuss this further with our Missions group.
