Title: Rant
Post by: Fizzygoo on <01-14-11/1455:22>
What the hell? Where is the old font. You know, the old Shadowrun font that was hard to read; small, with weirdly shaped "a"s and "e"s and with "t"s that when placed before an "i" would make it look like an old man "f" with a cane. I hated that font so much it was like the abusive older sister that I never had. And it never translated to the computer screen well, like it was half blurry, half drunk, and half incontinent...yeah, small font but big older sister. But by the dark gods I used it, on every file. Just. To. Piss. My. Players. Off. They'd wine and cry and weep that their eyes were bleeding from trying to read "The Shadowrun Font." And I'd just laugh and yell "suck it up, asswipes!" as I threw more and more toxic-blood-gestalt-cyberzombie-bug-spirits at them. It made them strong! (or bug food).

And that's why today's Shadowrunners are anemic and week! The reading is too easy. Their eyes see it but the content don't stick. They're Carebear unicorns at an imaginary car wash! Think it's a joke, well recent cutting edge totally-anecdotal neuroscience research says it ain't! (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/amazon/8256899/E-readers-too-easy-to-read.html) You've got to make players scratch and bite and claw their way through each word, each letter, so they not just understand the text...but they become the text!

Now I love my abusive older sister...but she's gone...gone from all the books that are now too easy to read and too easy to not remember what it was I was reading about like when you're driving to work and you're thinking about how you need to find that bit of taco bell meat that fell behind your desk yesterday but you were always just too busy to find it but by now it's probably started to smell a bit, or at least attract some kind of other living organisms like mice or chickens, like the chickens my uncle used to raise, they were all white with red feathers on their wings, he said he just painted the red on to mark them as his, but I never believed him, he was always pulling my leg, speaking of which the legs on that girl at the coffee shop were amazing but that was probably because of all the...what? Oh. Yeah.

Damnit! Where's my font! Where's THE font!?!

(This is a tongue in cheek post. Just to be clear this is an attack on no one. It's just a geek-rant with a smile :) ).

You could always do a search for it. (I'm not going to link because there's a LOT of places you can get this).

It's not the "official" font that they used (you gotta pay for that), but if you search "Shadowrun Font" you should find it. It's pretty close to the Franklin Gothic Medium font that's installed with Windows. What's fun is installing it then setting your browser to use that font instead of the default fonts in place (you can even override what the website's owners have set their CSS font to).

The other one you might want to pick up is the "Decker Font" as well, for those Shadowland posts. ;)

:) Yeah, I'm using Wordman's Shadowrun Font (http://rpg.divnull.com/srun/fonts.html) currently. When I moved to college the nearby "big city" used the Shadowrun Font on all of its parking structure signs...I felt like I was home :)

Hehe, that threw me for a loop when the Shadowland post font was introduced. I haven't used the Decker Font, at least not yet.

Now that's a great idea, over riding everything to the Shadowrun Font, hehe. I'm going to try that :)

By the way, you know what the current "official" font(s) is(are)?

I actually had that font for my computer, it was called Western when I found it.  Odd.  But I miss that font in Shadowrun books.  Heh.

Hehe, I originally found it as "Francis" but the newer Francises that I've found are not what the old one was, heh.

OMG, so I changed over the default font to Wordman's Shadowrun Font and, well, hehe, it feels like my right eye is trying to float over and around my left eye, but the tugging on the optic never is stopping it. Oh the joy, hehe :)

The font fit the older, more cyberpunkish day of Shadowrun.

But its 2072! Its the glittering, slick world of post-cyberpunk, where everything is polished up! Still rotten beneath the surface, but with a very nice surface! So, that font just wouldnt fit anymore ;)

FYI, the old primary Shadowrun font is Friz Quadrata (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Friz_Quadrata), which shows up prominently in a few other places, like the Law & Order television series. The new primary font is Klavika (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Klavika), which is well-known from Facebook.

(Well, we weren't born yesterday.)

I also used to use that font to write up all the official handouts I gave my poor vict- uh, players.  And then tech it up with a computer-print-style font for technical materials, stolen research, that kinda thing.

I don't know what I'd use now, though.  I'm playing, this time around.  Woo!
