Title: Reagent usage
Post by: Mikkyo on <09-05-16/0127:55>
Example Character:
Spellcasting 6
Magic 7

I know the use of a reagent for limits is not added to force from the  example on page 318, but for a spell that isn't force dependent other than the limit, can I use nothing but reagents to cast the spell?

Can I cast a heal at force 1, or even 0, use 7 reagents (to set limit 7) to keep the drain stun (minimum 2) and only have to sustain for one turn or even end instantly?

The example on 318, Abbi uses an indirect spell. On some spells (like indirect and area) the force also effects other aspects of the spell, but I can't seem to find anything saying the minimum force value you can pick, just that any spell you cast has a minimum drain of 2.

Minimum Force is 1. For your heal question, yes you can.

On some spells it works great, but there are some drawbacks, the most obvious one being that it costs money. Other problems are that low force spells are easier to dispell, and that sustained/quickened spells in a zone with background count have their force reduced by the BGC. If the Force reaches 0, the spell ends.

What Imladir said. Heal is a particularly good spell to use Reagents with, because it allows you to shorten the otherwise (Force) Combat Turns sustaining period, and make the spell permanent at the end of the same combat turn the spell is cast in.

Other spells, especially AoE ones, have other factors dependent on Force and so may not be a great idea to use Reagents with.
