Title: Looking for a piece of software in 5th edition...
Post by: Nomad Of Endings on <09-12-16/1709:54>
I can't remember the name of it, but it was some sort of network/software I think I read in 4th edition that basically would have you complete random requests that would help someone else out on the network and in return, people would help you out depending on what the software predicted you would need (Ex. The software would tell you to leave a magazine of ammo under a mailbox because it knew a Shadowrunner later today would be needing locations to store ammo in that area where they'd be doing a shadowrun, and in return, you'd get a favor the software thought you'd need at some point down the road.)

A) What the heck is the name of this software

B) Is it in 5th edition? :)

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated :)

You're after The Exchange. Not sure about earlier or later editions, but in Unwired/4e it's p83.

Quote from: EXCHANGE
One virtual private network of particular interest to shadowrunners, especially in and around the Seattle Metroplex area, is the Exchange. This program monitors your actions through your commlink and correlates that data with other users, tracking your needs and abilities with the geographic area you are in. At seemingly random intervals the program will prompt a user to take some non-threatening action with the promise of being “karmically rewarded”

Common instructions include:
• Take a left and buy the guy on the corner a soykaf with extra sugar
• Leave a clip of ammo on the stairwell of the tenement down the block as you pass it
• Visit Rhiannon and talk to her about Le Grand Grimoire for at least ten minutes

While odd, each of these services helps out someone else in the network—by providing a distraction, or a critical piece of equipment, or just a much-needed cup of soykaf during a stake-out. All of the users on the Exchange that heed the prompts find themselves subject to strokes of luck and happy accidents in a similar vein. Unlike most VPNs, the users have no other way to contact each other through the network, and no one knows exactly who is running it.
Previously, afaik, it was just marking your commlink with a red taped cross.
