Most of my mood music for writing or running is lyric-less (instrumentals); so I tend to use random game soundtracks and area-specific instrumentals where available.
(I use a lot of blues, jazz and jazzy-swing during my New Orleans writing)

For me it's stuff like the glitch mob, megadrive and mirrored theory when I'm writing potential campaign paths. You know get that edgy cyberpunk theme going.
For npc design and personal writing I lean towards the industrial, ebm and melodeath genres, they fit the grimdark atmosphere I tend to incorporate in my work quite nicely.
That said I'm open to almost any category of music, I'll bite. I'm looking for tunes at the moment, I have a huge mission conclusion in the works for this weekend and something new to listen to while I put the finishing touches on is always appreciated, (My group got in way over their heads with Saeder Krupp and have a group of highly trained mercs gunning for them, problem is they didn't know how far down the rabbit hole they were due to the fact I in media res'd them for the start of the campaign. They woke up on a plane with no memories of the last 24 hours thanks to a certain Tir substance and missed some key hints about what was going down).
