Title: [6E] Ritual Question - Renascene
Post by: Typhus on <10-11-19/1544:02>
"The base duration of the effect is 1 hour, which is doubled for each net hit from the sealing step of the ritual."

I'm assuming this is just a poor wording choice, but surely the intent is "+1 hour per net hit"?  Not a doubling of the previous increment (1 > 2 > 4 > 8 >16).  Anyone see this differently?

Given how bad the ritual rules are I can see both. Do the math on it even with edge you are only getting a couple net hits. But yes doubling would allow a crazy lucky roll get out of hand. 1,000 hours.

I'm not seeing an issue? No matter how many exploding 6s you may roll, it's still not permanent. And within the context of most missions, who cares if something lasts 10 hours or 100 hours.  Lasting 1 hour was already most likely more than enough...

EDIT: Corrected name in title.

So, you would be okay with a character having Levitate on themselves for 100+ hours?  Or an elemental armor spell or something similar?  That doesn't seem... imbalanced?

No, because they can already have it forever with a sustaining focus. Or Focused Concentration.

Plus: spells are easier to make go away in 6we than they were in 5e.  Is a spell a problem? Fine: Dispel it.  Much less of a hassle in this edition.

OK, fair enough assessment, I suppose.  Still feels conceptually imbalanced to me if its intended as an exponential increase.  That also introduces a new duration mechanic not seen elsewhere in the game (that I can think of), so it doesn't seem to be a consistent ruling if used that way.

As a gm, longish but not permanent durations can be fun. Players get used to them always on. They tend to be a rude surprise when they end.

I feel compelled to point out that this ritual is anchored and only works for area spells. Sure it could last weeks but only in one place.
