Background
Once upon a time, the Nelsons were nice middle-middle class family of nice middle-middle class people, with a comfortable Beaverton corporate-owned suburban home, two comfortable corporate-owned minivans, and the corporate-approved two point five kids, attending corporate-run technical schools. They even had a comfortable corporate-approved labradoodle. Edmund Nelson was a professor of naval history at a corporate-run university in Portland, or Cara'sir in Sperethiel, and Catherine Nelson was a comfortable housewife. Youngest son, Maurice Nelson is in a corporate-run kindergarten; middle child, Susannah Nelson, is the star of her corporate-run school choir; and their eldest son, Horatio Nelson, was bored out of his comfortable, corporate-run skull.

Horatio, bored with his predictable life, ran away at the age of thirteen, ending up in Seattle's Puyallup Barrens. Enduring hardships, he caught the attention of a local Fixer and Yakuza associate, Renta Hiro, who took the young elf under his tattooed wing.

Freed from his corporate-approved upbringing, Horatio thrived in the shadows, his elven grace and combat prowess proving to be formidable assets. Now known as "Ratio," he has became a renowned street samurai, known for both lethal combat skills and unparalleled skills as a negotiator. Ratio seamlessly navigated the intricate dance of alliances and rivalries that defined the shadows of Seattle.

Concept
Ratio is a pretty classic "Street Samurai," although he bucks the trend of the "Charisma Dump Stat" fighting man. He's got serious social skills and he's really good with a gun. He's beauty. He's grace. He's getting paid to shoot you in the face.

Background
1. Where is Your Character from?
Ratio was born and raised in Beaverton, a suburb of Cara'sir (formerly known as Portland) in Tir Tairngire.

2. Does your character have a family?
Ratio has two parents and two younger siblings, all still living in Tir Tairngire.

3. Does your character have an ethnic background.
Ratio's father is a Tir Tairngire-born elf of English ethnicity, his mother was a UCAS-born elf of Japanese ethnicity.

Appearance
4. What does your character look like?
Ratio is a tall, slender, and athletic elf with a delicate, almost feminine beauty. He's not uncommonly described as "bishounen."

5. What does your character dress like?
Ratio prefers to dress as appropriate for the environment: jeans, t-shirt, and sportcoat in "working class" areas; military surplus armored vest and webbing in "combat zones"; and the latest in corporate chic when "downtown." When he's able to freely pick what he wants to wear, he tends to gravitate to high end, cutting edge, haute couture.

6. Does your character have physical quirks?
Ratio's cybereyes have metallic rose-gold irises. Although not noticeable by the casual viewer, but the trained observer will notice the almost imperceptible "twitchiness" that is a giveaway that Ratio has had reflex enhancing `ware installed.

Skills, Attributes, Resources
7. Where did your character learn their active skills?
Growing up in Tir Tairngire, kenjutsu and karate were part of his elementary school curriculum, which is where Ratio picked up the basics for those skills. His years on the street refined those skills and taught him how to handle a gun. Influencing people, negotiation, acting, and fast-talking all just sort of came naturally to him.

8. Where did your character learn their knowledge skills?
Ratio learned the seedier side of glitzy nightlife by immersing himself in it.

9. Where did your character get all those wonderful toys?
Renta Hiro, a yakuza-affiliated fixer, took Ratio "under his wing" when he was a teenager. Ratio spent most of the last decade working for Renta, first as a mere errand boy and gopher, then a hired gun, and eventually a hitman/enforcer/cleaner. Ratio was paid for some jobs with `ware or weaponry, building up his arsenal piece by piece.

10. Where does your character live?
Ratio maintains a modest two-bedroom apartment in Everett, in a building owned by the Kanaga-gumi of the Seattle Yakuza.

11. Where did your character get their contacts?
Renta Hiro took a young Ratio under his wing shortly after he arrived in Seattle; Georgia Gibson is his current lover; Show Sato, Rebecca Porter, and Kikuchi Emi are all former romantic partners; The rest of his contacts were people he met and befriended over the past decade, working as a freelance "trouble shooter" or "cleaner" for Renta Hiro.

12. Who are your character’s enemies?
Despite working with them, albeit several steps removed, for the better part of the past decade, many of the "Old School" yakuza are deeply prejudiced against metahumans and mixed ancestry Japanese. As Ratio is 1/4 Japanese on his mother's side and a third-generation elf, there are many "Old School" yakuza who intensely dislike him and Ratio isn't particularly fond of them either. However, Ratio's reputation for professionalism, for keeping his word, and for getting results has kept things between the old guard and himself pretty low-key. The old guard work with him through Renta Hiro, never directly, so everyone can save face.

13. Does your character know magic? If so, where did they learn their magic?
Horatio has never had any gift for magic. No one in the Nelson family has.

Personality
14. What are your character’s likes and dislikes?
Ratio is enamored with fine fashion, fine cuisine, fine wines, and anything of luxury. The more expensive the better. He tries his best to hide it, but he intensely dislikes any reminders of the years he spent living on the street, homeless and hungry. The only thing he seems to hate more than that part of his life was his childhood in corporate-run, comfortable, middle-middle class suburbia.

15. What is your character’s moral code?
Despite his hatred of his childhood home in suburbia and absolutely loathing that his father used his son's name as a pun about it, Ratio does share his father's fascination with naval history. He holds to the ideals and concepts from eighteenth-century pirates, privateers, and sea dogs. Everyone on the crew has an equal voice and an equal share, leave no man behind, never mutiny, avoid using inappropriate levels of force, honor your word, and always try to be a gentleman... even when you're robbing somebody blind.

16. Does your character have goals?
Life of luxury. Preferably on a mega-yacht.

17. Does your character have personal beliefs? Political? Religious? Other?
Ratio is nominally Roman Catholic, although he hasn't set foot in the church in years. He's also relatively apolitical, he doesn't especially like the old Council of Princes that ran  Tir Tairngire... But the new "democratic" government hasn't exactly done much better. As a SINless illegal immigrant to Seattle, he can't vote in UCAS elections and doesn't really pay attention to local politics. He just knows it sucks and no one seems to be offering any better alternatives.

18. Does your character have personality quirks?
When not "on the job," Ratio is a shameless hedonist.

Running the Shadows
19. Why does your character run the shadows?
Mostly for the thrill... although the massive amounts of money don't hurt either. Other `runners might have political motives, like the Neo-Anarchists and Cyberpunks, other `runners might have personal motives, like revenge or vendetta. Ratio just wants to make a lot of money.

20. How does your character view their his role as a shadowrunner?
Ratio sees himself, first and foremost, as a professional trouble-shooter. He always tries to approach a `run with an analytical eye, looking for potential problems before they crop up. He also sees himself as a negotiator, mediator, and just generally a talker. He's always happier when a `run can be accomplished without unnecessary violence.
