Title: It's quiet... Too quiet...
Post by: FastJack on <11-20-24/1224:03>
I'm assuming you all are on super-secret deep cover runs or something. Either that, or having fun over on the CGL Discord (I get it, it's flashy and faster and has more gifs). Just checking in on our rowdy bunch and seeing how all of ya are doing.

So, what's the latest, my hooders of the sprawl?

Writing short fiction bits for NovelEmber, including a few Shadowrun things! Private, but good practice.

Personally in crunch time at work, and I know a lot of people for who things are busy between end of year work activities and upcoming holidays.  But also:

- don't these boards still struggle with letting new people in?  Every web community withers without a steady inflow of new members
- there hasn't been a new substantial new release in some time, each of those tends to spark some discussion (if only for errata)
- we are pretty deep into 6e, later in an edition always seems a bit slower as people who have played a particular edition for a while tend to have less questions
- just in general I've found that the ShadowRun sub-reddit had become more active than these boards quite a while back, and now there is the discord too for people who want a more controlled space (although I just went to the Discord and saw the general CGL channels but not the SR ones?  But it looks like my Discord may be messed up somehow, that might just be me).  But even those seem a bit quiet lately (I hadn't checked the Discord in several days, but last I looked it had slowed down)

Personally I'm excited because in my home game we just finished up Third Parallel in grand style, and I can finally start getting ready for Scotophobia events (we have a couple of interludes to get through first, but it is getting close enough that I can pretty much rely on where characters will be so that I can plan the dramatic start).

Still lurking... I check in fairly often but I've not had as much to post recently since moving pbp... have got a couple of 6E adepts in the works to add to my archive shortly though, been too long since that had an update! :)

It is quiet. I can disappear for a month and come back to find that I haven't missed anything.

Most of the current discussion is around 6E. I've been in three 6E games, all of them extremely short-lived. (I think all three expired before a single d6 was rolled.) I just don't have much to contribute around 6E.

@Beta, don't forget about us over on Dumpshock.

They are. You choose them when you first come in to the server. I'm over there, so if you have any issues Beta, DM me.

If you're looking for a 6E game I've been running various pbp games on RPG Crossing for ages!  Shout if that's of interest!

As quiet as the dead.
Which in Shadowrun doesn't say much...

I'm still lurking as well. Not so many rules questions over here, so I guess I spend more time posting over at reddit.

I just popped back on the old Dumpshock forum to see if it still existed, and saw I had a thread in there from 20 years ago :)  Merry Christmas everybody.

How does one opt-in to these SR channels on discord? I only see the general CGL stuff

I didn't realize that things that look like buttons are actually buttons in discord. I just thought they were weird emoji or something. Just goes to show how much I use this.

I mostly don't like discord because it's not open internet indexable, meaning all the knowledge just stays hidden inside the wall garden. But eh, if people be talkin' about the shadows, I love to be talkin about it too.

Thanks Michael for the crash course on discord.

There's also a bunch of servers where you click an emoji to pick certain roles. Speaking of, avoid the EMP checkmark in the rules channel. It EMPs your server access as a bot-trap.

Well.  It's good to see there's still some people on this old site.  I think I spend the better part of a decade begging for money online and living like a rat, but after years I'm finally back in a relatively stable place...  Lost my email account and a lot of things connected to it, but I still have the password for this forum account it seems.

I never forgot Shadowrun or the community here.  And thank you to the people who did try to help me some in the past.  Feels weird to come back.  Plus ça change.

I never got into 6E, I still try to play 5th Edition with friends now that I can have a (meta)human life again.  I do miss being "up to date" with what's happening in Current Year Shadowrun-- my games now take place in my own version of the early 2080's, which works out since I have been tinkering with the idea of a Philadelphia sprawl, and my own take on JackPoint called Bitmap or BMP, for runners and other shadow workers in and around Boston, Manhattan, and Philadelphia.

I'm trying to use Foundry VTT to play, but that's another thing I have to learn on top of my players all (always) being totally new to Shadowrun and thus having to be taught the game.  I think it'll be fine, but the biggest thing for me is battlemaps.  I like to use grids (square or hex) for Shadowrun to allow players to get into the nitty-gritty once Initiative is being rolled, and I have a player who's doing melee so it's more relevant (for exact numbers to go with movement-per-turn and intercept attacks).  But I simply cannot create maps from scratch; I struggle, so much, to envision what the inside layout of a building would look like coherently.  For outdoor maps, I've had SOME lucky using Google Maps and applying a filter to it so it isn't quite as starkly realistic, but once my players get a "enter a facility" mission I'm really, really not sure what I can do besides just giving up and accepting that my players might not care if every indoor location in my game is just randomly-scattered rooms with no lobby or bathrooms.

Now I wonder; does anyone even remember me?  I remember you.

There are various 'maps' and 'building plans' popping up on Reddit now and again, I've not really used them myself as I tend to use Google Maps for outside and wing it on the inside but there's some good stuff!

Welcome back Firebug -- it is great to hear that things are going better for you these days!  And also that you are still involved with ShadowRun :)

My mapmaking never evolved past scribbling something in a square-ruled notebook, but to follow up on what Aria said about Reddit, there is a recent thread on digital map-making where various people talk about their techniques, and someone links to their Pinterest archive of maps.  Likely worth checking out!  https://www.reddit.com/r/Shadowrun/comments/1iy1u8p/shadowrun_making_basic_maps/

Thanks, and thanks for the recommendations.  I'll see what other people have already made and see if there's anything I can use...

The campaign I'm trying to do is a very straightforward one, with each "job" boiling down to one main encounter with a roleplay scene before and after, so my new players can learn to play.  The first job is going to be a chase combat; with Foundry VTT I should be able to make a scrolling highway map for the battle to take place on.  I might be able to find a map for this one or I'll just have to make my own stretch of highway for it.

The second job (I am not preparing further yet, but I have the rest outlined) is going to be focused around a fight in a bowling alley, so that one I think I'll also have to make from scratch but, at least it's just a one-story building so they layout shouldn't be too difficult to match.

As a long time lurker, I remember....
Good to see some familiar faces (avatars?)
My 5e group fizzled out just as covid started (I got to finish my boston lockdown campaign at least)
Haven't played 6th yet - was hoping the upcoming boardgame would renew some interest in my group.

There is some irony in you completing lockdown before lockdown.

I really can't wait for Takedown to start fulfilling! Two years ago I demoed the prototype at Spiel, ~20 games, each different. Like the one that ended in a TPK because someone never heard of closing a goddamn door.
