So is there really no disadvantages to doing this? And can you cook your ‘ware constantly provided you spend a minor action? Yes I know there’s a massively small chance of getting a glitch but no player is going to do this on something that actually has a chance of glitching, right?? And they can always edge the roll… I seem to recall in previous editions there was something like a drain mechanic for doing this but there doesn't seem to be in 6E unless I'm missing something?
So how does this stay in check? The ability to exceed the max. +4D to a roll is grotesque!!
Any thoughts appreciated!

The max you can do is add two to the rating, adding a a single regular die and the wild die (which can be beneficial or disastrous).
