Title: Where do you base your games?
Post by: The Seven on <06-18-11/2126:51>
In what city, if any, do you base your games?

My first two campaigns were based in Seattle; my third was a Neuromancer-like travel around the world (including Evo's Shibanokuji Freefall Resort and a climatic ending in Z-O!) and my current soon-to-start campaign will be set in Lagos; I wanna try setting the game in a feral city, and I do have plans to involve my players in a mercenary group and end the campaign in a epic session in Bogota).

What about y'all? Why did you choose it?

Mainly Seattle, though the games i run tend to be episodic.  So if I wanted them to do a run somewhere else I would just plop them down there, and have them do it. (after asking first, of course).  I chose Seattle because it has the most locations, and that means less names for me to come up with and fewer places to invent.

My players are very resistant to traveling if I take too long to prod them to; all their contacts, lifestyles, etc. going down the drain makes them whiny like a little newborn elf in Asamando. But yeah, Seattle has a lot of ready material, and that's exactly why I prefer somewhere else, I have lots of room to invent and make the city "more mine." My first Seattle campaigns were based off Runner Havens instead of Seattle 2072, for instance.

But I'm digging Lagos so far, especially because I lived there for a year irl. ;D

I've always had travel as part of my games for any system.  I let my imagination soar!

When I first started running SR I played in Seattle, but when I began to run the game I started using Toronto(home sweet home) as a setting.  Familar geography was a big selling point for my players and myself.

Seattle has been my players home base since first edition with lot's of short work related travel and one year spent in London.
(A few of my players used to play a group of Italian troll brothers from Boston and regularly visited their mother and sister there and spent time getting involved in the local underworld.)

Was it for tax purposes?

I am currently running my home game in Lagos. I'm thinking about running the next one in Istambul.

My main setting takes place in Pittsburgh, I made a map and filled it with my own gangs. I rather like what I've come up with, and I have a lot of fun with the setting.

Denver of course.  But I do like the material available for Seattle and have run several games there, especially when I first bought the game in 89.

I normally use Cali, being a "free" state, my world has seen it become more or less anarchistic but they can always pull together to hold the border in case of invasion (my last campaign)

Traditionally, the games I've ran have always been in Seattle, but since I'm coming back after a long break, I'm thinking about hitting up some other areas for fun

Most often I have set games in Seattle with travel as the players got to the big leagues.
I did set one game in San Fransisco for a change of pace.

Still haven't GMed a game, but I'm preparing a game set in Amazonia (focused in Porto Alegre, with some action at Metrópole). Quite a lot of creation possibilities there, since the place is almost untouched by the setting books.

It's always good to set a game in your own turf. I cba coming up with everything, though, sadly.

I'd consider running a game where I live.... but southern Indiana is as boring in 2070 as it is today lol

Ever since Runner Havens came out, we've been running all our games in Hong Kong (because the write-up is awesome and we'd been doing Seattle for so long).  That said, we're not above travel on occasion.  We had a series of runs set in the UCAS (Seattle) and the PCC (both LA and Vegas), and have also gone to Mumbai and (soon) Neo-Tokyo.

Haven't GMed SR4... yet, but the plot I'm storyboarding starts in Milwaukee and heads in and out of Chicago, so I guess Chicago, South Milwaukee, and Milwaukee will be the primary setting, with a good smattering of parts nearby.

I'm running my game in the Minneapolis Metroplex as that's where I'm initially from.  I thought about running a game set in North Carolina (where I currently live), but I wanted to give my players something a little more personal :-)

I've run a few games in LA.

My group really, really hates my LA games.  Really.

I have to ask....what do you do that makes them hate LA games?

Well, their first time in LA, they had to hostile extract a specific Goofy from DisneyLand.  Which lead to a long gun battle on the LA Freeways, being tracked to their safehouse in the suburbs, and then the lawn got up and started beating up the house.  (They pissed off THE MAGIC KINGDOM!  What else did they expect?).

The second time they had to go to Aztlan, San Diego to be exact, and find Batman (This was just after a guy in a Batman costume was arrested in LA, which gave me the idea.).  During the "ComiCon That Now Never Ends, Brought To You By Aztechnology!  Aztechnology:  Geek money spends just as well as anyone elses!"  This soon developed into problems with Spanish-Speaking only police, the Catholic Church, and a whole bunch of pissed off geeks.

That's fantastic :-)  So amusing!

And then they incurred the wrath of Baron Von Vanderpluffe of the Black Forest Troll Kingdom.  Who the Ork Hacker of the group had been impersonating.

*Sighs*  And then bad things happened IRL and I had to drop the game.  :(

Well, before I joined my current group, I used to run mainly out of Seattle. But, that was with a group that wanted to play SR. Now, I have somewhat of a harder battle getting those shadows ran. Seems everyone in my current group with one exception, has no CLUE about SR. So when I did get to run a 3rd ed game, I based it here in northwest Ohio with Toledo as an anchor for a new sprawl. Worked out pretty well and it was fun to "sixth world" out my hometown.

When I fire up a new campaign I'll probably start in Seattle (as I think I'll have a lot of SR virgins, and I am really interested in the metahuman rights movement there), but I really want to run games set in Europe, primarily in the ADL.

I have to retract my original comment a bit... looks like we'll be kicking off in Seattle (I'm way too lazy to shift Emergence to Chicagoland).  Chicago will be coming up fast though, and the real focus.... didn't I read something about a commune of Technomancers out there that have cut themselves off from the noose?  ;)

Berlin is where my crew is based out of, I find the settings to be very tech savy due to the industrialized nature of the country plus the massive history allows for there to be an awesome amount of ancient magic and magical items from many a day gone by.

Also one of my player characters is playing a homebrew gragoyle who was apart of an anchient castle that got awakened... couldn't have done that anywhere but europe.

While all our characters live in Seattle, we do a lot of traveling.

Our next campaigns are going to take us to Lagos for Dawn of the Artifacts:Dusk, then one to rural Spain, and then on a cross-Russian tour.

Kansas City

I chose this because we all live about an hour away and because it was not something they expected for once.  I also like the fact that it is still UCAS and has little to no pre-existing fluff.  I can litterally sculpt it to be whatever I like.  You could do the same for other fairly large places like Salt Lake City, or Phoenix, or Boise.
