Title: Decker, No not hacker...D-e-c-k-er
Post by: sehmerus on <09-17-11/1603:44>
I had an idea, was wondering if it could be done (i personally dont have alot of hacker/decker knowledge yet (im still learning as i go) so i was thinking of what would be a kinda cool character. and an idea came to my mind of a hacker that is paranoid of WIFI and implants. so he has to be all about hacking by pluging in cables (aka a previous edition decker) and all his equipment has to be like goggles and gloves, nothing implanted. i was thinking i could probably use his phobia for wifi and implants as a nice neg quality.

he would need to have good infiltration and con, to get into the locations he needs to hack.

any ideas? or if you think you can build him give it a try and post here.

Really, you can play this quite like any other hacker.  You don't need to have holes drilled in your head for hot sim VR anymore, so you aren't at a disadvantage. My take on it follows..

Rebecca Anders (ParaNoya when she's online.. and that's about 99.9% of the time) is an old school Decker that has a body that won't tolerate any cyberimplantation without chronic pain and compromising an already weak immune system.. luckly, she's got a 'command center' in the basement her father owns and a connection to the matrix, so she doesn't care much. Her best friend is an old phreaker that claims to have been around when VR meant getting onto a sensory deprivation tank. She has a boyfriend that works for EVO (Ok, it's acutely a bored and neglected housewife with contacts inside EVO but on the Matrix nobody knows she isn't really a grad student orc that likes to watch animie with his girlfriend).

She's old skool, to the point that almost as much as she breaks past firewalls she gets on the phone and calls people up pretending to be security and asking for their passwords or puts on a fake uniform and forged security badge to walk right in the front door. "Social engineering is engineering too.."

Nice idea and nicely worked out, especially since you're new at this matrix stuff.  If I might propose a couple of minor tweaks/question:

-why the codeslinger (spoof)?  Do you anticipate taking away drones from their riggers often?  If yes, then great, otherwise something like exploit or attack migth be a better option.

-If you can find the money for it, make a couple of your programs ergonomic (unwired p114).  That way they don't count against your processer limit.  Programs like analyse, armour, stealth, reality filter, biofeedback filter and encrypt are good candidates for this option.  They run all the time in the background, so if they don't count for program load, you have more room for other stuff.

Spoof was on the idea that she'd make heavy use of quick and dirty rather then full-on hacking when she can. Come up to a wireless enabled lock, she'd spoof it. Need to get past security, spoof a camera to reboot and slip past when it cycles, or get a drone to look the other way.

The second suggestion is a very solid one. I don't use much stuff out of unwired normally, but anyone adapting this character should take advantage of options from that book.
