I'll be running a game in my town on saturdays starting next week but I was wondering how to teach the game to newbies. When I explain it, they soon get overwhelmed. Any tips?
-
Start with movie references. Blade Runner, Johnny Mnemonic, Hackers, Ghost in the Shell, etc.
-
I wish that would work but most of em aren't awesome like us runners and haven't seen those movies:/
-
How about the Matrix? I mean.... it's not quite like it but it has it's moments. :P
Then add magic.
-
Then I would suggest replacing your first session with Blade Runner, and if you have Anatomy of a Shadowrun, let them read it.
Then give them some pregens, and run Food Fight, followed by a simple run, before letting them make their own characters if they want.

We're gunna watch the matrix one of these weekends lol. I've seen it though. Whats food fight? I'm sorry if thats a dumb question. I got thrown in head first into the game.

Quick fight scene in the Quick start rules. Random gangers hit a Stuffer Shack when you are in it. http://rpg.drivethrustuff.com/product_info.php?manufacturers_id=2216&products_id=88366

Here are some other thoughts for inspiration...

I've always wanted to read do robots dream of electric sheep
-
Easy.
TRON + Lord of the Rings + The Expendables = Shadowrun
-
Good way of putting it
-
I have used League of Extraordinary Gentleman as a way to explain a bit of shadow run.
-
Saints Row The Third with Magic and Fantasy Species. ;D
-
Watch Leverage. Or the old Nasty Boys series.
-
Watch Leverage.
Hitter, Hacker, Grifter, Thief, Mastermind. The perfect Shadowteam. ;D

Hmmmm... now that's got me thinking of how you'd actually write them up in Shadowrun. How do these sound?
Eliot = Ork, Phys Adept or possibly an Augmented Adept, with a Geas against using guns.
Hardison = Human, Technomancer, probably an Info Savant.
Parker = Human, Gillette-style infiltrator, with Poor Impulse Control (Compulsive - High Danger) focused on stealing.
Sophie = Elf, Pornomancer Adept Face, probably has Big Regret, though I'm not sure what it is.
Nate = Elf, Charisma-based Manipulation Mage / Face, with SINner (Criminal) and Records on File.
I'm also thinking they'd probably be something like 450 BP characters with 264 Karma on top of it, based on 44 runs (aka, episodes) so far, averaging 6 Karma a "run".

Parker: "Don't stab, don't stab, don't stab, don't stab..."

Hmm... I may have just found the opposing team of runners for my game's PCs.
