Title: [Recruitment] Plato Lied
Post by: SeriousOne338 on <03-28-12/1240:02>
Campaign Name: Plato Lied
recruitment
Theme: High Seas Pirates

Start: 400bp or karma gen 750, all books are ok, but if I don't have one you are using be prepared to answer questions. Also I will be using CyberPirates book, this is an older book so not all rules will be used. Also I want to know why your character is choosing to be on the seas, 2072 seas are not the nicest places the maps literal have their be monsters here and mean it. The game will start in a Hawaiian port but we might not stay
Additional: The starting ship/boat will be supplied it will not be the best but will function. Also there will be a small crew of npc's: junior engineer, a cook, and 2 deckhands/marines.

Hints: swimming/diving/ pilot water vehicle/gunnery might be a good skill. Media addiction will be bad as these places will most likely not have net access. Also home ground quality is a no go; please keep the crazy restricted gear to minimum.

I am aiming for 4 players with 2 additional kept in reserve.  There should be a leader/captain, gunners mate, engineer, and a hacker, any can be mages and these are just suggested positions. Also expect combat both naval and cqb.

I hope to close recruitment by Sunday and start the game on Monday of next week.

So who's game?

Initial brief pitch

Crow is an Elven Warrior Adept, a man whose preternatural reflexes and sense for danger has made him a dark legend amongst his fellows, a warrior so driven that he's accepted a little hole in his soul just to get that edge, a lad whose lust for adventure has taken him from his little home on the western shore facing the sunset, through the marines, into life as a mercenary, and now he's a hard bitten runner, beholden to no one but himself, his friends, nuyen and the gods of the ocean.

Crow would probably fit into the gunner's mate category in that he's at his strongest when it comes to killing people in lots of different ways, although there's some other stuff he can do thanks to his rounded career... ok, mainly scare people.

Full sheet tomorrow hopefully. Arr!

Interested, got a Hacker/Rigger,  Wagner (http://forums.shadowrun4.com/index.php?topic=977.msg40365#msg40365)

Will modify background/contacts/drones(?) and some other stuff to fit better. Also need to find a way to put in a few quirks I found in the character during the brief time I got to play... he's turned out to be bit more looney than I originally thought he'd be; joining pirates really seems like something he'd actually do.

He might work, But you might want to look into re-writing his sheet. The sea is not a nice place ships go missing are attacked by giant monsters, pirates, private military, who knows craziness is usual for them.  Your drones and vehicles are useless on the sea so if your only going to do a small amount of  re-writing.

I'm interested in making a high seas mage or something. I can put something together tonight. If you have a chummer, pm your email and I can send you a chummer file.

Don't worry post your character as a Text file here.

Would you consider a Changeling/SURGEIII metagenic adapted to the ocean?

Started sketching it out, thinking background and such....

Also, how big is the ship if I might ask?  Relatively small crew, so I'm wondering whether this is a smuggling vessel, pirate vessel, etc.

Basically building a character around being seabound ("What type of person would prefer to be shipboard?")

The ship is going to be about as large as a PT boat right now, there will be chances to trade up  but the crew ship is starting small.  IT could be used as a smuggler, or outfitting with better weapons to try pirating.

Let me tell you a little inspirational story about Hawaii that my mother told me about a good friend of hers.

This guy had studied under the elders all about the currents and stuff around the islands and did a graduate thesis on it.  The question was, how did the ancient Hawaiians manage to navigate around without any of the modern equipment.  So, to test things out he led a group on one of those ocean going outrigger canoes and proceeded to sail from I want to say Oahu to the Big Island (Hawaii).  He was up for like 40 hours straight, keeping them on course.  When they got within site of the Big Island, he passed out to let them finish the journey.  But the fog rolled in and they got lost.  Dead asleep on the hull of the canoe, this guy could feel the current and the lapping of the waves and knew they were off course.  He got up and led them through the fog to port.

Great Story,
the reason I choose Hawaii was because I wanted a port in the pacific away from Seattle.

Looks like you've got your four characters already, but I've got an idea for a utility/engineer character. His name is Squid and he grew up as part of a smuggling family. After a stint in the UCAS coast guard (from which he was dishonorably discharged and imprisoned for a bit), he wound up on a "fishing boat" in Hawaii trying to make ends meet.

If you've got room for him either as an active or reserve I'll post a full sheet up later (Related, do you use the german Karma gen rules or the US ones or some weird cross generation).

I'll take this to mean that the GE Vanquisher Heavy Autocannon isn't really an option? (Arsenal 124)

Doberman drones can be used while entering ships, no? Or am I getting the wrong idea here...
Just asking because boat drones might be useful to sink other boats but the second we need to, well, do anything other than sink boats, land-based drones would be required, no?
(I do understand that the car is quite useless.)

Serious One, can you just clarify which set of the KarmaGen rules we're using/post a list of posts, as Chummer seems different from the Runner's Companion seems different from the German errata, and I am confused on things like whether I pay for my metatype and so on.

Also, does the ship come with guns, or is any such stuff going to have to come out of our allowances?

Mage / Nautical Mechanic (Using KarmaGen) - Possible Final Version

Question, what would be a good specialization for nautical mechanic and piloting a boat for fishermen? So many boat and types, i dont know what fits in what specialty.

Name: Lan McDoogle
Aliases: Simon Belford (Fake Sin), Hellion (Nickname)
Sex: Male
Ht: 6'3"
WT: 185lbs

Background: Lan grew up a fishermen, like his father before him and his father before him in Tir na Nog. His father was a sailor for the Tir na Nog navy in special operations. Lan was always intrigued by the mechanics of things and was taught some basic stuff on maglocks and such. If Lan was not fishing, than he was studying and when he was in his teens, his magical abilities awakened. They spoke to an old priest in their small village west of Castlebar. the priest, a follower of the Path of the Wheel became his mentor and shaped him into a man of nature. He wanted to start his journey on a path similar to his father's but in another place. He was granted money by his father to open up a fishermen place in Tír Tairngire, when he studied that much fortune can now be made with their more liberal politics from previous. Once there, he began his journey which did not go far. He ended up selling the business but keeping his boat, and sailed finding a new path for himself, reaching Hawaii, in hopes for something better.

Personality: Kind and adventurous with the willing to be a team player and a lover for women. He longs to find his path in life, guided by the spirits of the earth.

Yes, that's what I was thinking.

Webbed hands & feet, blubber, underwater vision, gills, climate adapted to arctic, thermal sensitivity.  Negatives: weird eyes (heck, you have a 2nd eyelid...), critter spook, reduced senes of touch (between the blubber & weird hands...).  With other pos qualities Direction Sense, Water Sprite.  Can take up to another 10BP PosQuals, might put it towards something to aid covert ops.

Perhaps the skillset to go with it (I don't think anyone else has taken) should be covert ops.  Once you slip into the water swim over to another boat, get on-board -- why not... makes you useful to keep around for recon.  No scuba equipment to stow as long as you're not deep sea diving....

Crisses, I'm sorta heading in that direction myself to an extent - no reason you can't and see what the GM says, but just pointing out. You'd have the advantage of not needing scuba gear too :p

Not sure what you mean -- looked like you were working on an adept warrior/gunner 2nd mate...I doubt we'll overlap enough to worry about.

Yes, not needing scuba gear is half the issue, much easier on the other end of a dive to go deckside and skulk about without many kilos of tank to stow somewhere...

I'm going for a few pieces of cyberware, perception, medicine (former Doc Wagon op), can pilot the craft (looking at a 3+ in pilot watercraft -- spent my childhood on the shores of England, and of course the Doc Wagon English Channel yacht-club rescue squad...)....working on history and fleshing out skills & gear....  I'll be back with a character soon nuf.  Not much flash -- can always work on cyber mods up the wazoo if I ever strike gold in a sunken ship recovery or something....

I'm more about the roleplay, and using my brains.

Mm, wasn't at my clearest - but he does have certain capabilities under those categories. Anyway, just saying, crack on.

Here is the current (slightly rough) draft - there's a couple of things I might change, the ammo's not distributed correctly, haven't brought extra clips, but there won't be substantial change, unless the Gm hates it. I'll just point out; Chummer doesn't seem to think I need to pay for languages, which is nice of it, but possibly inaccurate; or possibly not, given the Lingustics adept power.

Ok the out put I use for chummer is: Text Only  copy it from there.

So from what I can see is we have two covert ops people, and a rigger. who did I miss?

The dobermans are ok, but you need air support. Roto or Fixed wing for high altitude assistance.

Christ, chummer's text only version really doesn't translate well... will tidy that up when not so tired.

I don't see any serious conflicts -- so we can both swim...  so what ;)  one less arse I have to pull out of the big lake when the boat is caught in a storm or something...  I'll look at your character more closely when I can read it ;)  And I was going to take the Linguist quality -- but none of our languages overlap but English.  So that works anyway.  I was going for other Pacific coastal areas.  Though I ought to take French considering  I worked the English Channel....maybe Spanish -- then we have a language we can speak right in front of the gringos.

First time doing KarmaGen -- and I have 48 karma left over so far, but here she is for now:

Character Updated -- See Below!

Background thus far:

Minnow, once a pure human brit, SURGEd when she was 16 years old. She was raised in a coastal town in England, with a great deal of time spent in the ocean and on the rivers, fishing and enjoying the seaside life. Then she lost nearly everything when she SURGEd -- her family, her friends -- her only luck being that she was so close to the ocean; it was easy to get away from everyone and hide out when things got tough.

SURGE stole her dream of becoming an executive one day. However, her talents and predicament meant that she was sought-after by none other than Doc Wagon, so she spent several years in their service. Eventually she got tired of rescuing lazy executives yachting in the English Channel, but she couldn't get off the front lines and into another position in the corporation. She realized that there was more than just glass in the ceiling; she felt used. She ended her employment contract with proper British notice and all that rot, then took off on her own for a walkabout. The last time she went on one, she was a child and her parents visited India and several Asian countries where Minnow picked up many languages.

But Doc Wagon™ HTR experience did leave her with an ample toolkit to get along in the world, and her years of service working the Channel did offset the cost of her headware. A couple extra body-mods later, then nearly blowing her life's savings on gear and a bunch of one-way tickets across the globe -- she's just landed in Hawaii ("Why did I pick Hawaii? What was I thinking?"). Now she is seeking her fortune on the high seas, on her terms. Or at least a chance to do something more interesting than pulling jumbo prats out of the channel.

Here's my character, I think this time she's near-finished.

Background

Minnow, once a pure human brit, SURGEd when she was 16 years old. She was raised in Pagham, England, with a great deal of time spent in the ocean and on the rivers, fishing and enjoying the seaside life. Then she lost nearly everything when she SURGEd -- her family, her friends -- her only luck being that she was so close to the ocean; it was easy to get away from everyone and hide out when things got tough.

SURGE stole her dream of becoming an executive one day. However, her talents and predicament meant that she was sought-after by none other than Doc Wagon™, so she spent several years in their service. Eventually she got tired of rescuing crazy frat boys and lazy executives yachting in the English Channel, but she couldn't get off the front lines and into another position in the corporation.

What was I thinking?"), which had been their last stop on her childhood tour. Now she is seeking her fortune on the high seas, on her terms. Or at least a chance to do something more interesting than pulling prats out of the channel.

She stays in touch with her sailing mentor, Jason Windbourne {the head Training Officer at the Hastings Yacht Club located in St Leonards-On-Sea outside of Hastings, East Sussex} and Arthur Leeds {Doc Wagon™ HTR Team Lead, English Channel}.

Edit: The cyberware except the finger compartment is a lower-level executive suite than in Augmented.  I figured these were installed by Doc Wagon (& later paid off): The math coprocessor helps with navigation, internal commlink makes sense since it let her communicate underwater with her HTR team, the attention coprocessor helps evaluate a highly threatening environment more quickly to evaluate rescue options, etc.  I did not reduce the essence cost or the nuyen costs for the suite.).

Nuyen Total: Gear (35305¥) + Cyberware (17750¥) + 2 months Low Lifestyle (4000¥) = 57055¥ = 23 Karma & 445¥ remaining
Build Point totals: 750 = 243 + 70 + 332 + 39 + 16 + 23 + 26

Starting monies:  400¥ + 445¥ = 820¥ {+ 25¥ for credstick.}
[/spoiler]

Restricted Gear:  The MonoWhip is the most restricted property at 12F.

Either I would pay for the questionable items on my list (waterproof fanny pack & waterproof packs (i.e. bags)) and take the remainder of my monies as credstick + balance if allowable -- or add the remaining nuyen to my roll if that's not allowable.

Other starting monies (base roll, low lifestyle):  3d6=8 (http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/3437804/)

She's going to spend most of her time in the water in Hawaii lest she boil to death, and when she's on-shore, she'll wear her desert outfit, even if it gets funny looks ;)  Perhaps she can crack some jokes about it in Hawaiian.  And try to stay indoors.

Edit: Added clips & ammo.  Meant to.  Doh.  Pulled 1 rank (4 Karma) out of Knowledge: Doc Wagon HTR Methods.  Added marine +2 specialization to Navigation.  Have 1 spare karma floating around now.

My only suggestion is to change your pistol specialization to semi-auto that way it covers a larger amount of guns, other than that your good to go

Done.
Thanks, boss!

I did have a couple questions on costs on waterproof bags (in which to stow equipment, and a fanny pack or similar I can dive/swim with...).  And starting Nuyen (are we able to keep leftover nuyen from chargen, or only able to add it into the dice roll).  That about wraps it up, I think.

Blah those will be covered by your lifestyle. Plus they're not that expensive today so in 60 years it should be ceap-ish

Tally-Ho!

Hey, it's that proof-versus:

Quote
No shit, there I was:  floating under the surface treading water, watching the ship go belly-up into the ocean.  [The GM says "All your stuff is soaked in seawater & will be ruined.  You'll have to roll, even for all the equipment you had on your person, to see if it can take being immersed in seawater..."  I turn to the GM and say, "But all my stuff is in waterproof bags!"  GM says, "Where does it say that on your character sheet?"  Me: "But, I'm always around seawater!  Even since I was a kid!  Don't you think I know all about coastal flooding, and boats capsizing, and..."  GM: "If it's not on your sheet, too bad. You forgot."]

Here is Squid if he is able to fit. He's a Nautical Engineer with the ability to drive a boat (and a minor ability to rig it), but he's also got plenty of ability to defend the ship as well. I'll post a detailed background if he is able to make it in.

My suggestion would be to drop the specializations and up your gunnery. Other than that, the character looks ok,

SO you think. Remember bags can be burst or punctured

I am well aware that nothing can get in the way of a determined GM.

But one could not say I hadn't thought to have waterproof bags...I just neglected to make sure they were puncture-resistant hard-cases with pressurized compartments and self-healing leakproof seals.... :)  **hints to other players** ;)

Ya, it's English, forgot to add it into Chummer when I put the character in there.

Question on Pirated Programs.
They degrade over time (1 point per one or two months, depending on which kind of program).
To patch a program against this degradation, a hacker needs to do a Software + Logic(Threshold=Degradation, Interval 1 Week).
Say I have 4 pirated programs, do I have to do them all seperately, losing a month (4 x 1 week) in the process (and wasting a lot of hits, a good hacker will have a high dicepool vs a threshold of 1)?
Or can I say "Okay, I've got 4 points of degradation to patch" and if I get 4 hits on the programming test, patch all 4 programs in a week?

Seriously hoping the second, Hacker/Rigger costs so much :(

Don't you want to ask that in the rules and such section?
I would say each at once, but you can always rush the job to cut intervals in half. Also there is the option to join a piracy group and get there cheap pirated upgrades. Maybe even for free, if you contribute with some self hacked/programmed patches. Exchange rate might be like in the open source option.

Get open source software and contribute bugfixes upstream.  That's what I do.  Oh, wait -- that's Real Life™ ;)

What a bummer.  Your programs would degrade faster than you could fix them.  Maybe you could patch software full-time between runs because it's "1 week @ 8 hours a day" technically -- so you could do 2 in tandem if you don't need more than 8 hours a day to eat, poo, sleep, trim sail (or whatever you do on the ship...).

Technomancer?  That takes care of that problem....adds others....especially in the middle of the ocean without being able to use a satlink...

Oh, forgot asking/saying.
Considering we're being pirates and all, I'm guessing (and building accordingly) that we won't be as low-profile as normal shadowrunners? (No crowds/cities where we need to blend in and such.)

Note:  updated my char sheet:
Edit: Added clips & ammo.  Meant to.  Doh.  Pulled 1 rank (4 Karma) out of Knowledge: Doc Wagon HTR Methods.  Added marine +2 specialization to Navigation.  Have 1 spare karma floating around now.

If you aren't all full up, I would love to throw in a character. Karmagen is a lovely, lovely mistress...

Let me know, you know my style and post rate, so you can likely determine whether you want me aboard or not. Obviously this would let me flesh out my smuggling ideas a little better.

BangBangtequila your already in one of my games I really want to open my games to more people, but if you want to make a character as a backup there might be some room later.

Quick question while making my backup, do you allow technomancers to take an additional level of Resonance in lieu of an  Echo, and do you allow Echoes to be purchased at 15 karma each?
Title: Re: [Recruitment] Plato Lied
Post by: SeriousOne338 on <04-02-12/1220:41>
Not the most familiar with technomancers so let me read those rules.

Post by: bangbangtequila on <04-02-12/1307:52>
The gain a level of Resonance is just a house rule I find commonly on PbP for Technomancers and Mages, while the purchasing extra ones are found in Unwired.

Likewise, for Chummer's Options, do you make essence loss affect maximum or actual level?

Essentially i want to make a technomancer gunslinger using Biowire and and Acceleration.
