Besides Bladerunner. :)

What movies would you suggest to watch for an overall, Gibsonian Cyberpunk theme?

Johnny Mnemonic
Lawnmower Man
The Matrix
Ghost in the Shell (1&2, SAC, SAC: 2nd Gig, SAC: Solid State Society)

Burn Notice and Breaking Bad as well

An older movie that I think has a good Shadowrun type feel is Strange Days. Not your typical, but a good story that makes you think and has the cyberpunk feel to it.

I'll second Strange Days.  Saw it in a film class and the first thing that came to mind was "Oh, it's Shadowrun simsense."  Second thing that came to mind was "Oh...it's BTLs too!"

you nailed it with Bladerunner...

Ghost in the Shell for darn sure. It is very very shadowrun-esque.
Johnny Mnemonic as well.

Both of those are only missing metahumans and magic.

Others that give a good feel for various aspects of the game:

The A Team
The Boondock Saints
The Blues Brothers
The Bourne Identity/Supremacy/Ultimatum
Constantine
The Contract
Desperado
Gross Pointe Blank
Hellboy 1 & 2
Lethal Weapon 1-4
Lock, Stock & 2 Smoking Barrels
Mr. & Mrs. Smith
The Negotiator
Reservoir Dogs
Snatch
True Lies
War Inc.

Obviously some of these stray pretty far from Shadowrun thematically and setting wise, but they all have some pretty good elements of it, especially when taken as a whole.

I have to admit that Firefly & Serenity make me think of a runner team.  Got your rigger, a face, a techie, a couple street sams, a shadow-doc and an ex-military leading them all in the shadowy fringes of society doing whatever odd (and often illegal) jobs come their way.  I'm also likely to use Badger as a Fixer contact sometime.

BBC: Welcome to Lagos (Barrens)
Silent Hill
Alien Universal Brotherhood ;D
Split second
Batman: Dark knight (lots of runners toys in action)
A.I.
2001: Sapce Odyssey
Ring of fire
Terminator 1-3
Predator
Hitman :D
Ronin
Yojimbo // Fistfull of dollars
Apokalypto Aztlan

The Oceans movies.

Thanks guys, I found Bladerunner online free to watch.  I don't know how long it will stay up, but  here it is:

It's been a long time since I watched it, so I started watching it again.

For atmosphere I like

Akira
The 5th Element
Aliens (before they go to LV-426)
Demolition Man
Total Recall
The Running Man
The 6th Day

For the gritty legwork, team dynamics, and planning aspects you've got to check out Sneakers! Great cast. Great movie!
I also liked RED. Not a great movie but it might give you some ideas.

But nothing really beats Bladerunner for that overall look and feel.

That was a thrilling movie.

Yes, I did watch it.  And I thought that the AR was cool.  Speilberg had talked to quite a few futurists on making that movie.  It's getting dead on, unfortunately.  Although the RFID chips are a reality already (I think I'll be a shadowrunner when they start forcing those things on us.  After all, take the RFID chip and there is no going back).

For an effective (if dated) demonstration of the split between haves & have-nots:

Metropolis (the Fritz Lang silent film. The Moroder score may be more mood-appropriate, but the latest long edit with rediscovered footage is best)

For violent antiheroes coming together, and everything going wrong that can:

Pulp Fiction (I'm running the Free RPG Day scenario and am SOO tempted to have John Travolta walk out of the men's room...)
Resevoir Dogs (One time, our GM described the location our group was in as "kind of like the warehouse in Resevoir Dogs" at which point we asked if that meant that things were going to end that badly.

Of course, Shadowrun is more than cyberpunk--otherwise the name would be different.  ;D

Do people have any suggestions about "urban fantasy" movies/TV that work for a Shadowrun mood?

My wife & I started watching Dylan Dog, but have found the acting utterly atrocious so far.

The trailers for Sorcerer's Apprentice (Nicholas Cage, not Mickey Mouse) look promising, but what do people think?

Hurm. What about the TV series Beauty and the Beast?

Sam: What's in the case?
Deirdre: That isn't necessary.
Sam: Is it heavy, is it explosive, is it chained to some unlucky bloke's wrist? Are we gonna have to chop it off?
Deirdre: All right. But I am not under any obligation to let you know...
Sam: If not, the price has gotta go up. I'll get you the case, but the price has gotta go up. If it's gonna be a amateur night, I want a hundred thousand dollars. I want it upfront. I want it in a bank account. I want another $100,000 when you get the case.
Deirdre: [after a phone conversation with someone] You'll get your money when we get the case.

Vincent: Do you want to back him up?
[Sam shrugs]
Vincent: What would I profit from your death?
Sam: Well, you'd have the money.

Looking through those movies listed so far I'm surprised to not see Heat listed.

I like the portrayal of both sides of the conflict. I thing GMing SR it is easy to forget how hard it is to get cooperation from coworkers (as in the platinum heist scene where the lazy SWAT guy gave away their position) let alone inter agency or inter corporation.

Also, a resounding second for Sneakers.
Title: Re: Movies to watch?
Post by: Sliver on <07-10-12/1640:10>
There's a documentary that I watched recently that is simply called The Corporation (it's on Netflix right now), and it gave me so much insight into shadowrun. It's not futuristic, but it states a lot about massive corporations, how they work, what their mindset is, and ultimately how flawed they are with regards to only having the goal of profit in mind as well as their sociopathic tendencies. I can literally see Shadowrun happening to us (rather than magic) in the future with regards to corporate structure.

It gave me a lot of ideas, and worked awesome for this corp-centered universe.

Hollow Point (Two feds and a hitman try to catch a guy who launders money for the mafia, Vory, and the Triads)

Dog Soldiers (Infantry squad gets hunted through the woods by a paranormal critter)

Actually, someone mentioned Ronin early on in the thread.  However, I third Ronin.  Probably the most Shadowrunnish movie I have ever seen (sans magic and cyberware)

I noticed that a lot of people are listing movies that don't even come close to being shadowrunnish, they're just throwing out sci fi movies that have guns or robots in them (ex: terminator).  WTF?

That's an easy one. Maybe once in our lives, we players have come up with something original, but 99.9% of the time we are taking tropes and concepts we've consumed in other sci fi and fantasy media to come up with our characters. I would even argue that sci-fi and fantasy have been recycling the same concepts since long before I was born. You can only swing a sword, kill a dragon/king/queen and fight aliens/robots/nano creatures so many ways. So, even if there isn't a direct SR example, every single one of these movies offers a bit of characterization and personality to draw from when we are building our characters and/or a seed for an adventure.

The Lion King: Young AA corporate exec is pushed out by his uncle. He hires the runners to break in and find information showing that his uncle took what is rightfully his.

The Great Muppet Caper: just follow the plot

The Sound of Music: doable. Singing your roleplaying interactions earns extra karma.

Soldier
They Live
Max Headroom (tv series)
Tek War (tv movies)
Sin City
Predator 2
Human Target (tv series)
Doomsday
Robocop
Streets of Fire
Drive (1997)
Brother (2000)
Nemesis (1992)
Big Trouble in Little China

I don't believe I saw any of the these mentioned yet.

I also feel these already mentioned deserve extra emphasis:

Split Second
Strange Days
Way of the Gun
Cast a Deadly Spell
Escape From New York
Ronin
Leverage (tv series)
Equilibrium

We're not talking about Gibsonian in and of itself.  We are talking about what the initial question was refering to, which was "Gibsonian Cyberpunk".  Note the word "cyberpunk" which you are completely ignoring in this discussion.  You can introduce other stories and other possibilities, which I am all for, but don't make outlandish claims that movies like Lion King, Sound of Music, Fiddler on Roof, Lord of the Rings, The Ringer, and Naked Gun are "Gibsonian Cyberpunk".

They certainly all have aspects to them that could be used in a Shadowrun campaign, but they are not, and I repeat, NOT Gybsonian Cyberpunk.

I never made that claim. I said that all of those movies have elements that would translate well. If someone is more creative than a toaster, they can take those themes and tropes and easily apply them to a cyberpunk genre.

A horror/thriller flick set in a dystopian post-apocalyptic cyberpunk-ish future. And the "creature" design is amazing, imo.
