I am very interested in playing a game rather than GMing one for once, and this would be my first PBP game, though I'm on the waiting list for others (but none that is still recruiting, I'm just hoping someone drops out).  I am able to post a lot more than once a week and I'm rather familiar with the Seattle setting (speaking of which, is the game taking place before or after Brackhaven has won the election against Dzugashvili? Just so we know whether security is still run by Lone Star or by Knight Errant).

I'm fairly open to any and all character concepts, but I have a marked penchant for Adepts. I tend to build my characters with the idea that they should be doing more than just shadowrunning (and I've been known to force my players to take some Interest Knowledge Skills to reflect that their character do more than just kill stuff).

The character I would likely be interested in portraying in this game would be an Israeli born ork (hobgoblin if metavariants are allowed). He was trained partially by the MOSSAD to become part of the nation's special forces (if the same as real-world Israel, all citizen must take a 2-year military service). However, being nominally Jewish, as he is fond of saying, "Funny how 'chosen people of God' doesn't seem to apply when you're frakking ORK". Fed up with racial prejudice, he enrolled with one of Ares' subsidized mercenary forces, who was more than happy to have an additional heavy hitter.

After a year of service or so however, the youthful optimism wore off, and his dwindling Essence as he constantly strove to improve himself for the battlefield meant he felt more detached. With the detachment came a moment of zen-like epiphany, though he's more wont to say he just got fed up with it and decided to just "frag it". After a somewhat disastrous operation where most of his assigned squad was killed in the bombing of their vehicle. Being especially hardy, he survived but tossed aside his commlink and anything else that could be used to retrace him. Figuring the cybered ork had been taken away to a chop shop, the search for his body was short-lived.

Using contacts made along the way in his short mercenary career, he came to Seattle, where he hoped to establish himself in the Ork Underground. However, obtaining a fake SIN and an apartment were costly, and he no longer had access to his savings if he wanted to stay off the radar. Selling all the equipment he didn't need (who needs desert survival stuff in Seattle anyway?), he had no choice but to look for work, and there's only one thing he's really good at: busting heads, kneecaps and just about any other bone in a metahuman body.

More on his personality: A quick look at the average lifespan of an ork made me realize something: physically, they are probably mature around the age of 12. Thus, despite being a slightly experienced soldier, this character remains a kid. He plays Miracle Shooter (which doubles up as a training), spends money on music and sims (I always buy a bundle, and I may even pick specific bands from the Attitude book) and all-around isn't too aware of the whole dangers of his lifestyle, with some of the "magical thinking" of teens still left in him, thus making quite the thrill-seeker. He also has something of a problem with authority figures.

So let me know what you think about him. I can post a character sheet later or tomorrow if needed.

I fully expect to not be included in the game due to the fact that I'm running one and playing in another, but I thought I'd throw my character in the ring just in case.

I've included his backstory and concept in the character notes.  He's a hacker/face, and he's ready to earn some creds.

As for me, my posting availability is far more than once per week.

EDIT:  Character Removed.

No involvement in current games, on the wait list for Scare_Crow.

Awakened Concept: Cyberarm Mage

1) Christian Theurgist Combat Mage. Perfunctory melee skills, can shoot an assault rifle, and sling a spell. Disillusioned with faith. Can be with or without a Mentor Spirit (was thinking Adversary or Dark Goddess or something equally... unclean). Spirit Bane (Beast).

2) Bad Rep, Big Regret. Just another Street Shaman, an English Druid actually... who lost his arm and his team months ago. Rumours say he got partially eaten by a dragon. But he just fled when things got bad, summoned a spirit to take him away and left his team to die. Or so the story goes.

Mundane Character: Courier

Primary purpose in life is to use the skimmer discs on his feet to do crazy acrobatics. Shoots an arrow pretty well. Takes delivery jobs, charges extra for pick-up (especially if he has to BnE). Has old school lock-breaking skills, new toys, and modern spoofing abilities.

For the Awakened character I'd like to explore a bit of religion and magic, redemption and even forsaking the faith. For the Courier, who lives paycheck to paycheck, I'd like to explore the consequences of living a hard and fast life.

I'm definitely interested.  I'm already involved in one PBP, but it's just not enough to sate the thirst.  I'll post up a sheet as soon as I get one ready.  A quick question though, which books are open?  Just the core, or can we go nuts on options?  Also, I'm probably going to roll a Gunman on this one.

Kozak, I have most of the books so no real limitation there. I will not be using karmagen though.

I guess I'll toss in my two cents of a character in this mix.

I like all the settings in Shadowrun, but like any kind of mystery and hardcore on the awakening side of things.

Post by: Kylen on <08-24-12/0139:08>
Character: Jackson "Card" Hart
Archtype: Smuggler Adept, hand to hand expert, Triad Member, local bouncer
Themes: Foregnier in the Triad with high connections, Delivery boy, "I will not strike the first blow, but I will strike the last"
Goal: Live long, pass on the wisdom his Grandfather gave to him, be the first known North American to hold high level leadership in the Yellow Lotus Triad. Keep his mechanic and best friend out of the shadows.

Background: Jackson grew up on the wrong side of Downtown Seattle as a kid. When the crash happened, he was lost in the chaos, being on a school trip. His SIN erased, he was kicked off the bus, being told only students could be there. Wondering the streets, almost dropping to hunger when an old chinese man offered him a deal: He'd feed the boy, and give him shelter, so long as he ran an errand. Gladly accepting the offer, young Jackson ate up and ran off with the package, never knowing what it was, even to today. Thus began a long career as a courier for the Triad, earning him respect among some of the higher ups. Officially, he now works the North Seattle routes, living in Everett proper. Effectively the 'manager' of his branch of the front business "Express Bike Delivery Group", Jackson does a lot of the jobs that come in, and business is good. He knows now that old man got him a good jumpstart into the shadows, and does what he can to pay his respects now, almost 20 years later. The real pay isn't that great, but he makes a lot of nuyen with shadow deliveries for his real clients, the Triad. He does do some other work for various corps and businesses, but he hasn't run against his loyalty yet, having earned a place in the Triad. Unfortunately for him, he doesn't yet work directly with his savior and "Grandfather", Linh Wai, but for a local underboss, Yung Ling, but he's doing his best to work as quickly up the ranks as a non-chinese can, and is helped by his Awakened status, being an adept.

Jackson does know that his family is alright, and that they miss him dearly, but he hasn't revealed to them that he's still alive yet, doing his best to insulate them from his new, shadowy work. Another person he does the same with is Lucas Yang, a Chinese orc who serves as Jackson's best friend, house sitter, and most importantly mechanic. Lucas knows there's something fishy with Jackson's work sometimes, but has come to believe that if it was to threaten him, Jack would say something to warn him. His girlfriend has other thoughts, thinking that he shouldn't be wasting his life in northern Seattle as a lowly bike mechanic, dealing with lowlifes who do nothing with their lives. Thanks to this, the two visit the local mechanic and bike themed bar, The Crank Shaft, often for brews and bullshit. The insulation is helped by the fact that Lucas only knows Jackson by the fake name of Roan, though even the slightly thick headed orc thinks somethings up with that name, given that he doesn't always answer to that, and twitches when he hears the typical "hey Jack!" line, such as when something's pissed, as though trying to prevent himself from answering it.

Last but not least is the woman who keeps Jackson's body fixed up, Miss Maggie. An ex-doctor for Doc Wagon, she helps out who ever she can, one of the few people outside of Wai that Jackson trusts in the underworld.

Known Background: Jump into the Virtual Underground '93 pool, and check out their Street Legends thread. Iceblade did a wonderful work up on the kid.

To be edited with his history color coded to show what's harder and hardest to know about him.

Street Alias: Mr. Smith

Archetype: Face

Background: Mr. Smith is a down and out former company man for Horizon. With a tarnished rep in the corporate world, only the shadows offered him a chance for gainful employment. He's taking his first steps into the shadows, and he might be in over his head. Mr. Smith is a negotiator first and foremost, he prefers nonviolent resolutions to confrontations.

Goals: Find a way to rebuild his reputation so he can get back into the corporate world, preferably with Horizon.

== Description ==
Even for an Hobgoblin, HB is on the tall side, taller than even the average ork, though he retains his metavariant's slender build (most of his weight actually come from his implants). To his black eyes and pointed chin are compounded "typical" Jewish features, with an aquiline nose and deep orbits.

HB dresses casually while not "working", wearing either hoodies and jeans or baggy cargo pants and vests painted with the name of one of his favorite bands. A healthy sense of paranoia means he usually wears those over his form fit armor. When he finds the air a bit chilly (which is often, considering his origins), he also adds his leather jack, conspicuously free of anything that could resemble a gang ID.

== Background ==
Hershel is an Israeli-born hobgoblin. He was trained partially by the MOSSAD to hopefully become part of the nation's special forces (in Israel, all citizen must take a 2-year military service). He even agreed to undergo some implant surgery to try and keep up with the Adept-heavy elite of the Israeli Intelligence agency, boosting his reflexes to superhuman levels. However, though he was nominally Jewish, as he is fond of saying, "Funny how 'chosen people of God' doesn't seem to apply when you're a frakking ORK".

After a somewhat disastrous operation, most of his assigned squad was killed in the bombing of their vehicle. Being especially hardy, he survived the crash and managed to sneak away, though he tossed aside his commlink and anything else that could be used to retrace him. Figuring the cybered ork had been taken away to a chop shop, the search for his body was short-lived.

Using contacts made along the way in his short mercenary career, he came to Seattle with the help of smugglers, where he hoped to establish himself in the Ork Underground and live a "normal" life.

== Concept ==
HB is a mercenary, and thus he has a wide array of skills that are useful on the field of battle, including knowing the basics of healing wounds, surviving in a hostile territory, repairing arms and armor, jamming enemy communications, being sneaky and, of course, killing stuff.

HB is more of a close-combat specialist. His Hobgoblin sense of honor demands that he takes it "up close and personal" whenever possible, and over time he's had himself implanted with the ware needed to survive long enough to reach his opponent then have enough strength to drop him.

== Notes ==

Fun fact: his nickname "Hard Boy" comes from the initials on his helm (HB) and the fact that he is indeed rather hard to kill. The nickname was coined by some of the mercenaries he worked with, and he nows carries it to remember them.

Well I am currently in one game about to begin, and on a waiting list for the other which is about to begin. But if I happen to get the spot I would love it, I can easily post once a week, and probably more then that. The character I would use would be my cov ops/B&E style character.

Name: Richard Trelone
Alias: Whisper
Race: Human
Sex: Male
Nationality: American (mixed Germanic/Italian lineage)
Lifestyle: Middle
Karma Spent: 0
Physical Description: 6' tall with black hair cut short and a permanent 5 o'clock shadow, brown eyes, and normal workday clothes, Whisper looks just like a hundred other people you meet on a daily basis. The only possible feature that would catch your eye would be a large ropey scar across his throat, if his throat was ever visible. He always takes care to wear a hankercheif or high collar shirt, something to cover that scar. A side effect of this is that his voice is raw and scratchy, and requires a conscious effort to push beyond the level of a whisper as Richard has refused to let doctors simply repair his vocal chords.
Personality/background Whisper is a child of the shadows, he always sits with his back to the wall or else facing a reflective surface, his eyes never stop casing a joint once he enters it and he is always coiled on the inside, ready for a sudden burst of movement. Yet he makes a conscious effort to always look relaxed, normal, and completely part of his surroundings. He has become so good at it that it is hard for anyone to pick him out of a crowd. He feels fierce loyalty for anyone he works with, and hates traitors with a burning passion. He holds a special place in his heart for small children, especially little girls, to such an extent that he refuses to ever endanger them in any way with his actions on a run.

When Whisper was young he worked for la familia in L.A., as was a family tradition. His father had been a member of the syndicate, and his son had followed in his footsteps. Whisper found out at a young age that he had a gift of silence, he could sneak into places his father only dreamed of and it made him a natural born burglar. He lifted precious stones and secret documents with equal ease for the mafia, until his sister came of age and his father was informed that she was being "honored" with a position in one of the Gianelli's brothels. Whisper immediately snuck his family out of their home, and using all of his skills at subterfuge hid them away in an out of the way location, thinking they were safe he returned to L.A. to face down the bosses, hoping to make a deal of his services in payment of his family's debt for their betrayal. He was subdued upon reaching the meet and then dragged back to his home, he had been followed to his hideout thanks to his sister, she had called a friend to let her know she was safe. Whisper watched as the house went up on flames, and he heard his parent's cry's for help just before the knife slid along his throat, and then he saw only black.

He awoke a week later with a local hermit sitting over him, his hands aglow with healing magic. He learned that the hermit had found him moments after the mob had departed and had barely managed to stem the blood flow and save his life. A search of the ruins revealed only two skeletons, meaning his sister had not died in this fire. Since that day he has kept his eyes incessantly peeled for news of his sister, and held a private hatred of the Gianelli crime family, though in his professional life he never let any hint of his past identity arise.

Well, it seems I'm the weak link here.  In that case, feel free to take my name out of the running.  It's a nice even six players without me, so it's okay.

Considering throwing something in for consideration here. Things have calmed considerably in my life for the time being, so the once per week posting shouldn't be too much of a problem now. Working on one with combative ability and some stealth ability at present. Just need to finish it off and get some kind of skeleton of a background into it (prefer more skeletal backgrounds in most cases and letting the details fill in as play progresses).

Umm, the initial post said recruitment would be on first-come basis and that it would be open for at least a week... that was yesterday. If you want to play, there is not reason for you to drop out now.

Recruitment is open.

I have only listed candidates in the OP so I can track what information I have so far. Being listed is not an indicator of acceptance into the game.

Note that at this stage I have not asked for characters sheets, only for character concepts and goals.

Kozak, I have not heard of a character concept from you yet.

Sway, Recruitment is NOT on first come basis.

Raiden, I am leaving recruitment open a minimum of one week from the time of my original post specifically to allow for those people interested who may not have been available to immediately post to join in.

I tend not to mess too much with grand scheme goals any more. I've been burned too many times with them being completely ignored, and it's pretty much just got me into the mindset of just playing the character and only worrying about 'goals' which are more short term and are created in play.

As to concept, while I was building, I came up with a former Tir covert operative (can't do a true former Tir Ghost due to the fact that it takes a heck of a lot of points to even get to their level of stats and skills, not to mention anything learned afterward) turned part-time security consultant for a AA corp--which can be determined later.

My character's goal at the present or rather simple: establish himself, clear his debt, find some additional contacts (he needs his own street doc), get cool stuff.

In the mid-term, he intends to get a decent enough fake SIN to get a more normal life, but stow it away and remain active as long as the thrill lasts.

In the long run, once th thrill's gone, he'll try to pull a big enough job to make a fair amount of money, take his best, unused SIN, and try to get a life.

For now, he's a 14-yr old cybered Ork, happy to live a day-to-day existence.

Currently I am not playing any games on these forums, and I can easily post once a week, much more frequently likely.

I have a character in mind that would be a troll, a fomori metavariant, that focuses heavily on unarmed combat.

His back story would, not be all that complex, seeing as he was just thrown out of the facility where he was cloned, and being slated to be a new test subject for cybermancy. For reasons unknown to him however, he was thrown out with nothing but the augments he had at this point in completion.. Since then he has been living off of stealing, or using his formidable appearance to get odd jobs. He is very bad at anything social, so his income is very low for what his character could be capable of.

His short-term goal is to survive day-to-day. His only long term goal is to find out why he was thrown out of the program, and what he can do to get back in it and finish the process they had started.

I can upload a character sheet shortly if desired.

You know, among the things that bug me beyond the fact that my hackles raise at the mention of cyberzombie, I just wonder why your character would be of the only race with the Arcane Arrester in-born Metagenetic Quality. Cybermancy requires extraordinary magical resources merely to attempt it; trying it on an Arcane Arrester means they'd have to spend twice the amount of those resources for the same result. Since that is really the sole defining trait/advantage of a Fomori, it makes me wonder why a corp (at least AA to have the resources to clone something and attempt cybermany) would choose this metavariant over a more common troll, or anything else with a naturally high Body to survive the surgery.

I don't say this to be mean, I merely think you thought that Fomori looked like an interesting metavariant to play and didn't think this through completely. Bear in mind that cyberzombies are never casually "made", they are those elite soldiers who've proven so valuable to the corp that they earned the "privilege" to become "more than human". Or they're 6-million-man types who's been wouldn't severely and need more spare parts than their essence can handle, and once again the corp feels it would gain more by keeping him/her/it alive and investing untold amounts of nuyen into a cyberzombie than just let him/her/it die and hire another competent solider.

Of course, I'm not the GM, if DireRadiant is good with this character, who am I to argue?
Title: Re: [Open Recruitment] ShadowLand
Post by: WhackedMaki on <08-27-12/1110:06>
That makes quite a bit of sense, I don't consider it mean at all. The reason I chose it was due to my characters inherent weakness to magic, lacking in mental attributes worth a darn. It's something easy to change if requested though, and I would just increase my defenses to magic in other ways.

The reason I chose cyberzombie however, is that it's something I consider interesting. It wouldn't be something I could pull off within any short-term future though, it's be a very long down the road goal for a character. As stated in augmentation however. "The procedures for becoming a cyberzombie are rare, expensive, and dangerous—well out of the reach of any starting character."(Augmentation, 155). This tells me that it is well within the rules to eventually become a cyberzombie, just not something you can start out with, or achieve easily.

Hello everyone,

I´m interested in joining this game. At the moment I´m  planing a Rigger who has contact to some kind of syndicate or is political active, but at this point the concept is not clear. Hope you don´t mind if I need until the 30th.

Another idea would be a troll hacker who runs a matrix store for "handmade designer high heels"  from his run down one room apartment. The name would be "Heels". His main goal is to expand his legal business.

Any way I´m new to this forum but not new to SR4. A posting frequency of once a week would be fine with me and like every German I´m absolutely reliable ;)

Some follow up questions.

Necrogigas - Can you give a one paragraph description of The Crossroads?

DiscoDwarf - Describe Hard Boy's relationship to Mahuta, and Turgan.

Kylen - Can you provide a one paragraph description of The Crank Shaft?

Vinnmun - Allerd has no contacts?

Father_twilight - What is Whispers relationship to Charlotte Evans?

WhackedMaki - Concept is fine. Perhaps DiscoDwarf has given away your entire backstory. Give me an example of an odd job he's done recently.

Ethan - Pick either character concept

Gaius - Pick either character concept

All4BigGuns - What event made your character go from the Tir covert operative to Sec guard?

Kozak - Need a character concept or character

Sway - Posts in thread but no character concept. :)

The Crossroads

Sitting between the industrial Auburn and devastated Puyallup, The Crossroads is on the rough and tumble side. The exterior of the club is low key, designed to look like a rundown manufacturing plant. The interior looks like a cross between an industrial plant and a biker bar.  The first floor consists of a stage and dance floor at the back, a bar at the center, darts and pool tables to the left, and booths and tables to the right. The second floor consists of rooms intended for “private parties and business meetings.” These rooms come equipped with white noise generators, and the deluxe rooms are even warded. The AR overlay is minimalistic and no-nonsense; the proprietor isn’t one for flash or glitz. The AR menus are bland, but there’s little spam in the club’s AR feeds. The club’s node is themed like the industrial plant the physical building is reminiscent of.

This enough?

Mahuta and Turgan are both Ork who share the Underground.

Turgan is HB's first contact in the city, but their first contact actually dates back to a protection job he did as a freelance between assignments while in the UCAS. Turgan had contacts within HB's mercenary group who let it known that if people were interested in getting some extra cred, he'd have a small job for them. It was indeed a small job, protecting a smuggler during a tense meeting with buyers that had lately shown they might be more interested in the goods than in paying for them, and showing up with extra muscle seemed a good idea. HB earned his stripes in Turgan's eyes when he disarmed two of the hired thugs even as they were still drawing weapons, and promptly tossed the buyer into his fellow mercenaries' hands to discourage any further "funny business". Not a shot was fired, and the buyer was suddenly a lot more cooperative.

When HB finally thought about leaving to settle elsewhere without the hassle of being part of an Ares-sponsored mercs, he dug up Turgan's number and arranged for a way in the Seattle, again tagging along a smuggler. Once in the city, Turgan put HB in touch with Mahuta, a gang leader "offering" shelter for "fellow orks down on their luck".

Mahuta turned out to be little more than a thug with a brain, running protection rackets in his part of the Underground. Still, the first time they tried to impress HB, it turned out he impressed him. Having had little info from Turgan, they expected another poor immigrant slot hoping for a better life in the Emerald City, so they sent an unproven ork from their gang to rough him up. HB was nice enough to only break his arm and send him back with a note saying he didn't need movers to get his stuff into his new home. Somehow, Mahuta found it hilarious (more than the poor guy who'd pulled a knife on HB anyway) and met him in person. Mahuta had enough brains, contacts and resources to be helpful though, dealing with illegal immigrants all the time, and he "generously" offered HB to lend him the contacts and resources he need to settle in, mostly in acquiring a SIN and some licenses for the more obvious stuff he carried. Of course, the gang leader sent him the bill, and now not only does he collect HB's rent, he also collects the interests on the 10.000 HB owes him.

After selling most of the stuff he would likely no longer need through Turgan, HB agreed to do some jobs, either for the fixer or the gang leader really, so long as it pays his rent and lets him eat, and maybe buy that new VR game coming up.

Charlotte Evans is a woman he met during one of his early jobs, she was trying to dig up dirt on a target he was chasing down and he chose to get his information by following her and finding where her investigation led. Eventually she found a nasty piece of dirt on his target, and as a result a hit squad was sent to take her out. Whisper chose to intervene and help her escape, and took out the hit squad. Ever since then the two of them have had a "quid pro quo" relationship, where he will give her clues and tip offs to whats happening in the shadow world and she keeps him up to date on the corporate end of things. There is some latent sexual tension between them, but neither have ever acted upon it.

Professor Tolan Redborn: Works in the Magical Theory Department of a University (if we in Seatle, than Seattle University). Allerd took classes through him, almost a mentor to him. He usually likes to bounce theories off him.

Dylan Edwards: Urban Anthropologist, a guy he met along the way in his life, through school. He likes to talk to him about magic in a sociological manner.

The odd jobs wouldn't be anything fancy. Rough up a local bartender who didn't pay on time, take out some low life that pissed off a mob boss. He's basically be a low level gangster, but not actually associated with a gang.

Father_Twilight - Thank you for your notice. Currently you do not appear to be pushing out anyone, so if you are still interested please keep an eye on this thread.

WhackedMaki - Exile. I reviewed the CS you posted in the Big Black Book o' Runners thread. Which raises some questions for me. One of which is how come he is still alive. After a couple of months on the streets he is bound to have encountered someone who can fry his brain by looking at him. Or simply talk him into doing something very fatal. So who is looking out for him? If it's the gang, then perhaps he should have a stronger connection to them. Or it may be that it is fairly early after your release from those awful cybermancy experiments that you meet the other runners.

Everyone - You are going to be on a run or runs with your fellow Runners in this thread. What would that Run be, and why would you all do it together?

Run to go on: I'll say good old fashioned corporate espionage. Infiltrating a research center or scientists home to obtain research files on a new product.

Why we would work together?: The majority of the characters driving goal seems to be monetary gain and the construction of a reputation in the shadows, as such we would be drawn to each other to create a team capable of meeting everyone's needs while watching each others backs. Considering the wide range of skills among the varied offered characters its easy to see the people coming together in the shadows to obtain other members who have skills the team needs that none of them have, such as a hacker, or an investigative mage, a gunbunny, a spy, a face, etc. As for why I would work with them, anything that gets me more influence in the shadow world is good, as it gives me higher odds of chasing down and repaying those who shattered my characters youth and family.
Title: Re: [Open Recruitment Until 8/30/2012] ShadowLand
Post by: WhackedMaki on <08-28-12/2124:28>
I was thinking that it hasn't been that long since my character was released from these experiments. If you would want me to do something related to the gang, I could, but it'd take some moving around of points (side note: it's most likely the Organ Leggers would get to him, what with 214k worth of implants).

I'd say may character would mainly go on a run that would be given by some kind of gangster, bringing down some other gangster, getting info he needed, the like. Something requiring muscle. Anything very social my character would definitely not be sent on, as he kind of sucks at that. He probably wouldn't be sent a purely stealth mission either, he's not bad at getting in places, but once he's in, his only hope of remaining quiet would be to subduing somebody from behind. He could do okay at it, but it's a big risk compared to taking them out from a distance.

As to why my character would work with the others: Because he was told to. He may not like all of them right away due to his bias, but he would still help them if told. He has no reason not to work with others if it means getting closer to his goal, of which earning money is a HUGE part. Reputation means nothing to him, so if the goal was purely to earn respect, he probably wouldn't be interested, unless it meant more jobs of larger payout from the boss later on. Another reason he would do it would be so that he would have people with which to survive. As you point out, he probably won't last all that much longer on his own, so having a group to help him would be a big advantage.

Money. Survival.

My character is not wealthy, stuff happened. Drek hit the fan and so did he from the looks of it. He's choking on guilt, he stinks of betrayal, and he still has to eat. Maybe he'll be able to look at himself in the mirror someday. But that'll be a bonus.

Title: Re: [Open Recruitment Until 8/30/2012] ShadowLand
Post by: DiscoDwarf on <08-28-12/2344:05>
HB is a thrill-seeker. He enjoys a good fight though he's not cruel and will not uselessly kill downed opponents. To him, the world is a big video game, and he's one of the main characters (though he has no problems with going for a multi-player run). As such, he's likely to be especially on the lookout for things that are appealing to him either because they sound risky (and thus fun), or because they're likely to involve an interesting challenge to his physical skills. Though he knows enough not to be seen if needed, he's not big on infiltration jobs because he likes to prove his physical might. However, having worked as a merc, he understands that a mission objective is more important than personal taste, so while he'll sulk about it, he will do whatever is needed.

As for why he'd join up with others, there are two main reasons. The first is that he is new in town, and not being very good with social skills, he knows just about no one, so anyone he'd worked with (likely thanks to his fixer) would be someone he'd have a chance to interact with. The second reason is that all his training comes from military service, first in Israel and then as a merc. Being part of a unit is ingrained within him and he would actually feel a bit lost about what to do if he were to operate solo. Though his teen spirit forbids him from saying so, he craves the company of people, if only to show off what he can do.

Due to the lack of time I have this week I won´t be able to come up with a complete character concept until tomorrow. (Especially since I always need a lot of time to think of something fancy...)
So I guess I won´t make it in the team. That opens the door for another techfreak since the group appears to lack a hacker or rigger with decent matrix ability`s at the moment.

Anyway hope you have fun with this run(s) and if there becomes a spot free later, I would be glad to join you then.

Mission-wise, well, I'm not a big fan of 'investigation' style games. They tend to bore me to tears normally.

As to working together, my characters will normally work with just about anyone. It's rather unprofessional to let one's personal feelings toward another person get in the way of the job after all.

Edit- Noticed the question marks on metatype on the list, so I figured I'd confirm that here. The character would be an elf (just base elf as the metavariants don't really interest me for one reason or another).

Jack  Ork combat hacker/adept

Jack has a gift for technology. If he had been born to a corporate family he probably would have gone to MIT&T and been a well paid corporate computer expert. He didn't. He grew up in the puyallup barrens. He was small (for an orc)  so learned that his best protection was a strong rep for repaying any slight. He technical expertise focused on weapons primarily. He didn't expect to live long, but he was going to be damn sure that he wouldn't go out without a fight - and a long line of broken bodies attests to what he does to people who don't manage to actually kill him. It wasn't until he was discovered by the owners of the Armadillo bar that his horizons were broadened.  The owners take in people with a gift for matrix work and train them - to honor the deceased bartender who took them in and helped them when they needed it.

It turns out Jack's gift for technology extends to computers - and especially hacking.

His technology training is now complete - and they gave him a cutting edge com and software to boot (no one every gave jack anything before). Jack still doesn't expect to live very long -  he's left a trail of broken and bleeding bodies over his short life and payback's a bitch - but he is committed to repaying the folks at the Armadillo before he dies.

.......
I'm thinking an adept with exceptional skill at automatics and hacking. For flaws I want to take day job (spending time working at the bar) in debt (not that they actually expect him to pay it back - but he always pays his debts) and vindictive. I'm also thinking about taking local fame.

Since I work at a bar in the barrens I could have met up with just about anyone and  know enough about their talents to work with them on jobs I don't think I can do alone. For example, if a small time gang came into the bar and messed the place up - or stole something - I could see working with a group of runners to return the favor. Maybe I get word of where their stash of drugs/btls/whatever is and I contact a few people to help me take it off their hands and spend the proceeds? At least one other player seemed to be kicking around having yakuza ties, so I might want to bring someone like that in to make sure things don't escalate out of control (e.g. sell the goods to the Yakuza at a discount to so no one bigger than the street gang I hit has a reason to get involved).
I could see Jack looking out for someone like Exile long enough for him to get on his feet- depending on how they met up.
Also, Jack's morally flexible enough, and talented enough, that he could be pulled in on all the standard runs and would be glad for the work.

I can post the full stats tonight if you want - it seems like your main focus for now is concept though.
I'm not in any play by post games

Post by: sway on <08-30-12/0921:21>
Name: Benjamin "Benny" Saunders
Runner Persona: Killer-B
Age: 18
Height: 6'3"
Weight: 186 lbs.
Skin/Hair/Eyes: Ashy Grey, Black, Hazel-Brown

Appearance:
Benny is a fairly typical specimen of a orc male, standing around six foot three and weighing around 180 lbs. (more with gear of course). His skin is a near ashy shade of grey, his hair is black, and his eyes are a diluted hazel-brown (though one rarely sees him without some manner of glasses, shades, or goggles on). Benny wears a discrete but formidable armor set-up that can be concealed under virtually any type of clothing (excepting shorts and tank tops). On jobs, Benny wears a tailor-made street-suit (complete with trench coat) that can change color to adapt to his environment. Day to day, or when meeting Johnsons, Benny's clothing can vary but generally tend to follow the latest Underground trends.

Personality:
Benny is a fairly reserved individual and the universal consensus among all those who know him is that he really needs to find room for a bit more "me time" in his life. Generally speaking, as a runner, Benny is consummate professional, taking his all of his employment contracts very seriously. However, he does have a few peculiarities. Benny was raised in a fairly devote New Baptism family in the Underground, and while not exactly devote himself, the tenants of the faith have colored his personality a bit. Likewise, his father was very anti-human and Benny himself suspects, but can't yet prove, that local members of Humanis had something to do with his brother Marcus's disappearance. Thus, Benny is somewhat biased against humans. This combined with his mean streak and temper can sometimes compromise his professionalism during runs, but he tries his best to keep his moods in check. It's also important to note that family is very important subject to Benny. He hates his mother for abandoning the family and blames her for his father for drinking himself to death in the years afterwards. He is near obsessed with finding his brother Marcus (though he suspects he's dead) and still treats his other brother, Trent, as an over-protective parent would. Finally, Benny is a surprisingly moral individual (at least by runner standards), when his temper is in-check. He tends to employ non-lethal tactics whenever a job will allow for it. Though, when he loses his temper that can change rather quickly.

Background:
Benjamin "Benny" Saunders, was born and raised in the Ork Underground of the Seatlle Metroplex. His father was allegedly a late goblinized Ork, who came to Seattle from Denver, hoping to find a more stable community within the city's Ork Underground, having been drawn in by a New Baptism missionary. He met Benny's mother there, and in 2054, they had four children, three sons and daughter, though the girl didn't survive much longer than a week after being born. Life for the Saunders family, like that for most Orks was difficult but made easier by strong community ties. However, his was not to last.

Following the Crash 2.0, Benny's father became involved in the formation of Skraacha gang and an increased impetus among members of the New Baptism faithful to become more violently proactive against anti-Ork elements like Humanis. This caused a rift to develop between Benny's parents, and eventually his mother abandoned both her family and the city altogether, causing his father to turn to the heavy binge drinking that claimed his life prematurely, even by Ork standards. Thus at only nine years old, Benny and his brother Marcus and Trent were essentially orphaned, with only their local community and their father's gang to depend upon.

For the most part, Benny's brother Marcus, who matured much more quickly than either Benny or Trent, became the "man of the house" for his brothers and managed to get initiated into Skraacha at only eleven years old, which was still somewhat young, even by Ork standards. Benny spent most of his youth trying to emulate his brother, though his physical stature never quite matched up (which was still a far cry better than Trent, who was born and remained the runt of the liter).

To make up for his lack of natural muscle, Benny took to street fighting and frequenting the local brawl circuits, leeching off whatever he could from watching them. Sometimes he'd even pick fights with the competitors after their matches, just to learn their moves better. So, by the time he was fourteen, he had basically self-taught himself a vicious style of mixed martial arts that made him just as dangerous as Marcus in a brawl, which opened up a place for him among the Skraasha. However, by that time, Marcus had all but abandoned the gang for more lucrative opportunities in the shadows.

Marcus encourage Benny to run some jobs with him, but Benny's conflicting loyalties caused him to shy away from the offers, time and again. This remains a point of near obsessive guilt for Benny, as Marcus disappeared after the completion of one of his runs and hasn't been heard from since. Benny, Trent, and various members of the Skraacha looked into the disappearance, and multiple rumors were uncovered (some not surprisingly pointing an accusatory finger at Humanis), but ultimate nothing was ever solved. Neither Benny nor Trent took the disappearance well. Trent became even more of drug addict and lay about then he already was, while Benny pulled away from friends and community. Some figure say it was out of anger, others arrogance, and still others say it was just the guilt. In truth, it was a little bit of all of that. In any event, soon, Benny began taking over brother's would-be running career.

Benny started out running errands (and quite honestly "hits") for the Skraacha and their clients, but eventually hooked up with his brother's old fixer and found some real jobs. The more jobs he managed to pull off, the more he invested in "improving" himself and trying to create what other runners had informed him should be his "runner persona". Having recently upgraded himself with a electroshock ware (which he swiftly began incorporating into his fighting style), Benny started using "Killer-B" as his runner identity, but was eventually convince by some Skraacha gangers who already knew him that having an actual initial form his name in his supposedly "secret runner identity" was probably not a bright idea. So, for a while Benny tried out "Stryker" as a new identity but quickly found out that nobody in the shadow community was unaware that Killer-B and Stryker were one and the same runner. Thus, Benny returned to using "Killer-B", initial be damned.

Despite his early "hiccups", Benny has settled into the Seattle shadow community and the underworld in general pretty well. He dropped his brother's old fixer a while back when he found a more competent one downtown, and finding jobs is becoming less of a chore. Of course, in the last few years he's also gotten no closer to finding out what actually happened with Marcus, which still eats away at him.
Marcus Saunders, Missing Brother (Ork Muscle, Heavy Weapons Specialist, Novice Rigger)
One of Benny's two fraternal twin brothers. The largest of his brood, despite being the same age as both Benny and Trent, Marcus took on the role of big brother, especially after their mother ran off and their father subsequently drank himself to death. Marcus was in-tight with the Skraacha and encouraged his brothers to likewise associate themselves. He was also a would-be runner, but, after one of his jobs, he went missing. None of the other members of his team (at least the ones that Marcus's friends could hunt down) had any clue what happen to him and confirmed when they split their cuts and went their separate ways, the burly Ork was better than fine.  Benny has felt tremendous guilt ever since his brother's disappearance because Marcus had tried to get him to come in on the run too. Benny started working the shadows shortly after his brother's disappearance, in no small part as means of looking for him or more realistically simply finding out what happened to him. So far, Benny has only heard various conflicting rumors and vague accounts. The only semi-credible story he's heard so far is that on the night his brother disappeared some Humanis clubbers had bragged about taking down a surly Ork who was throwing credits around at a local bar like he owned the place.

Trent Saunders, Ne'er Do Well Brother (Ork Club-Goer, Drug Dealer, Wannabe Skraacha)
One of Benny's two fraternal twin brothers. Trent was the runt of the litter and seemed destined from birth to become the underachiever and ne'er do well of the family. Despite being the same age as both Benny and Marcus, Trent has always been the little brother of the family, first being shelter by Marcus and now by Benny. Trent does do any work in the shadows but he hangs with the Skraacha, who more humor than actually accept him as one of their own (partially because he can be pretty funny sometimes and partially out of respect for his brothers). Marcus is an occasional but steady source of complications for his brother, sometimes needing Benny to fight his battle or pay his debts, and often crashing at his place (with friends no less).

Jense Rabati, Mr. Tall, Dark and Swarthy (Wakyambi Fixer, Chronic Gambler, Smooth-Talker)
Jense Rabati is a pretty scary guy in Benny's opinion. When he walks into a room, he stands almost shoulder to shoulder with even some trolls but moves with a sublime sort of grace and mesmerizing aura of authority. Jense, like any good fixer has his hands in a lot of pots and connections all over the place. Benny has never once come to him not been able to find some kind of work (or at the very least a lead on where to find some work). In earnest, sometimes Benny feels like Jense coerces him into doing some jobs he might otherwise turn down. It is just the way the big, lanky guy looks at you. He gets in your head. Of course, if Jense does have some weird mental powers, he apparently lacks the ability to utilize them at all times, because the man has a serious love of games of chance, but they don't tend to love him back. Benny has literally seen the man lose his entire cut of a job the very same night they got paid. In any event, Benny doesn't fully trust Jense, but then again, in his experience one really shouldn't fully trust any fixer or Mr. Johnson.

Regan Smits, Skraacha Ganger (Ork Femme Fatale, Ex-Girlfriend, Bat-#$@# Crazy Pyromaniac)
Regan Smits was quite literally "the girl next door" for Benny and his brothers. During their youth (which admittedly wasn't THAT long ago) each of the Saunders brothers fancied the free-spirited and oft violent Regan as being their own, but it was Benny who ended up actually getting with her, carnally speaking. However, this proved less than boast-worthy for Benny. Not an hour after losing his virginity, Benny awoke in agony to discover Regan had gleeful set his shirt on fire, and it was at that precise moment, as he panickingly rolled around in the dirt, that Benny realized two things. One, Regan wasn't just feisty and aggressive, she was bat-!#!@ crazy. Two, things were not going to work out between the two of them, romantically speaking. Regan wasn't apparently all too broken-up about this and the two have remained in contact on a friendly basis, though Regan occasionally gets nostalgic and wants to see Benny's scar. In fact, upon learning Benny had his skin replaced; Regan broke into his apartment and burnt him again in his sleep (though this time she brought a bucket of water to put him out).  Given her obvious insanity, one might wonder why Benny bothers keeping in touch with her at all. Well, Regan has earned herself a decent spot among the Skraacha, who don't see her pyromania and violent tendencies as negative qualities (and it also helps that she has fairly loose morals and apparently only feels the need to ritually burn her "first"). She may be nuts, but she's a good "in" to the gang nonetheless.

Doc Zeke, Street Doc (Dwarven Medical Specialist, Man of Mystery, Dirty Old Man)
Doc Zeke is, as Benny puts it, "The dwarf who made him the ork I am today." Just about every implant or treatment Benny has ever received was done by the Doc or by referral from the Doc. Doc Zeke isn't your normal street doc or dwarf, as most dwarves wouldn't saunter into the Skraacha control section of the Underground as frequently as he does, but he has deal with the Skraacha (probably for patch-up and wares) that keeps him relatively safe. He also frequents certain dens of inequity around town. A peculiar rumor sometimes mumbled in the Underground is that the Doc actual has a thriving legit medical practice somewhere in the nicer part of Downtown, but if this is true, he keeps the details of his double life a better secret than any runner Benny has ever met. Either way, Benny doesn't really care. The Doc has patched him up and supped him up more times than he can count, so he's alright in Benny's book. In fact, the Doc has exchanged favors with him in the past. On two occasions the Doc has contacted Benny to help get angry pimps off his case. Most recently, Benny had the Doc implant him with an Adrenal Regulator, in hopes it would help him better keep his mean streak in check when it matters. The last thing he needs a Lucian situation with another runner.

Lucian Leblanc, Rival Runner (Elven Physical Adept, Knife-Fighter, B&E Specialist)
Lucian Leblanc is an elven European immigrant and physical adept with a penchant for knife-fighting, as well as industrious breaking and entering. Benny worked with him a few times at the very beginning of his running career a few years ago, and never really liked the guy. However, the mutual animosity between the pair didn't begin until a research lab vault job they were both selected to do. The job itself went fine, except that one guard with an abnormally good work ethic managed to catch sight of the duo during their exit and gave chase clear across town. The guard was apparently arrogant (as he didn't call for back-up) and quite bigoted, as he made repeated slurs in Benny's direction. Eventually losing his cool, Benny scuttled his own bike into the bigot’s truck, sending him careening into a nearby lamp post and undoubtedly into a trauma ward sometime after that. Unfortunately, while this didn't impact the mission at all, it was more costly than just getting a new ride. Unbeknownst to Benny, Lucian had stolen some extra tech from the vault, as a way of getting a little something extra on the side, and stowed it away in Benny's ride without telling him. When Benny took out the bigot, he cost Lucian a nice score and the elf has never forgiven him for it. Likewise, Benny was none-too-pleased to realize Lucian had put the stolen tech in his ride in the first place, as the adept had clearly done it to ensure that in the event of something going wrong, Benny would take the heat for it. The two are now known by all their mutual associates as "incompatible rival runners".

Eli Evans, Licensed Armed Security Guard
Eli Evans, according to his SIN is a licensed armed security guard currently working for an operation in Downtown Seattle called "Ergometric Expansions Unlimited". He has two vehicles registered to his name (a motorcycle and a sedan) and rents a small place in Renton. He has one warning for excessive force on-the-job and two traffic citations on his record, though the fees were paid. His license as armed security guard was first issued three years ago and was renewed last year. His employment prior to his current job was spotty, but since obtaining his license his shopping habits have increased substantially. At the request of his employer, Evans applied for and received permits to augment himself to better serve as a member of the companies security personal. He was turned down for a promotion to security chief last month. Employer records state the reason for the turn down was "typical trog attitude issues", along with a report of an on-the-job scuffle with a fellow employee.

Bradley Brown , Licensed Bounty Hunter
Bradley Brown, according to his SIN is a licensed bounty hunter and bond agent working freelance in the greater Seattle metropolitan area. His last formal employment contract was a year ago, when he was on retainer for a bond company called "Xenobond CLXV", which was bought out by a Renraku subsidiary, resulting in a disgorgement of all the companies standing contracts. He has one vehicle registered to his name (a motorcycle) and rents a motel room in Redmond, on a by-the-day basis. Prior to Xenobond being absorbed, he was renting a Downtown apartment. He has a colorful but also fairly typical record (for a bounty hunter): several citations, a couple of arrests, and a one-year term of imprisonment. His license as a bounty hunter was first issued four years ago, but was revoked as part of his term of imprisonment. Current license was reapplied for and granted a little more than a year ago. He requested and was granted permits for several augmentations, citing "high risk job field" as the reason for applying. He has numerous successful bounties on record, however, nothing major since the Xenobond merger.
Type of Missions - Well Benny has no talent for magic or hacking, so he wouldn't be well-suited or have much to do on those type of mission, save perhaps providing body guard service, which is actually fine be me. I really don't have a preference for mission/run type, just so long as there is stuff to do of some sort and the story stays interesting.

Why Work Together - Nature of the beast, Benny can't really do it all and generally speaking, serious runs take people of diverse skillsets to pull off.

Edit: Fixing typos.

Couldn't post the sheet in the same post as the background and such, too many characters.

Edit: Oops, forgot, I am currently not participating in any other game, though I am on the wait-and-see list on another game. I was going to be in a game on another site, but the GM vanished after one in-game post. So... yeah. Anyway, I shouldn't have much problem meeting any posting requirements that aren't too demanding (but if at some point you decide to outright require more than say... a post-a-day, I'll probably not be able to keep up with that... RL and all).

Thanks everyone for your interest!

Recruitment will be open through the end of the day. So if you haven't expressed your interest yet, there is still time.

I am starting a review of all candidate entries and will be asking for some clarification.

I am starting an OOC thread for the game for accepted players to begin posting in.

Sorry for the delay.

Jenever used to be the captain of a Dutch trading vessel. That meant most of his work was maintaining the ship via the various drones and manning the weapons of the ship to protect it from the aggressive toxic spirits and the pirates of the north sea.

To make a little extra money he got involved in smuggling drugs on the vessel he was controlling.
Well how things go if you decide for the wrong side, you get bad karma. Bad karma in this case meant he got caught and spend two years in a Dutch prison.

After being released he left the Netherlands to go to Seattle to leave his past behind and start new.
He bought a bison and some drones at a local fixer and now tries to start a new carrier/live in the UCAS.

Since his prison time he got a problem with alcohol. He tries to control it but it more and more starts to control him. He also got some debts at the fixer that he will need to repay asap.

His contacts are the fixer Vegas(who lent him the money) and the nice Chinese neighbour(Mr. Zheng triad soldier) at the trailer park where he parks his bison over night. As a good Dutchman he likes camping anyway and lives in his bison.

He will work with everyone if he gets paid but he probably needs Vegas to bring him in contact. Karma became important to him so he won´t do everything for money.

Edit:
he is obviously a drone rigger and needs matrix support since this isn´t his strong side.

Hehe, Sorry about not having replied. Work caught up with me and I almost system crashed (not nearly bad neough for a doctor, but I am sick right now), but I'll definitely get that paragraph about the Crank Shaft bar and grille up for you here today or soon. I do hope you're still watching this thread at least DR. I'll be trying to watch the actual play thread to keep up.
