Post by: wolfrider66 on <09-18-12/1209:52>
The pressure is on now...my daughter called and told me to my delight and horror that she is a Shadowrun fan and wants to join my group. No problem I got this....... :o

No. You. Really. Don't.

Run man, ran fast! Run far! Never stop running!

Oh.

Welcome to the club.

He doesn't have to really worry until she says she wants to use some "augmentations" from the Augmentation book. ;)

This is bad? This dimension is strange.

Well, I'd say welcome her to the group. Some fresh blood and new perspectives never hurts at the table. And she might surprise you with a character concept you haven't thought of before.

Yes, but depending on her age, there goes all the "adult", "sick", "twisted" plot lines.

His characters will be forced to change how they relax. Gone are the b!tch3s and b33rs! In comes playing parcheesi and drinking soy milk.

No more kicking ass and chewing bubblegum, now it's calm, rational conversations to solve our problems.

No more raiding mega corps for top secret paydata, in with runs VS kitten mills to free the fluffy kittens!!!

was into Shadowrun?

Unless the kid is 12 or younger, there shouldn't be too big a change, Reaver. Just because someone isn't able to vote doesn't mean they can't talk about the sick and twisted. Hell, you see as bad or worse on the internet all the time, if you have even the slightest idea where to look. If you want to tell me that no underage people have seen the 2 Girls 1 Cup video, for instance, I'd say you were being naive.

The what? video?  :o  Now I feel naive...  Maybe I've been using the internet wrong...

Oh, unless the video is about two girls sharing one cup of tea and having a nice chat? Nooo....? oh well... :-[

I've heard of that video, but never seen it. From what I've been told, though I thank my lucky stars (I've also never been to the 4chan website).

I won't describe the video here, or even link to it. If you haven't seen it, or heard about it, then simply go to Wikipedia, and you'll get the gist, without the graphic details. Or you can go to YouTube, and find videos of people's reactions to watching the video. It was a big meme about five years back.

Suffice to say, there is a lot of crazy drek out there, and you'd be fooling yourself if you thought kids didn't know about it. Putting the 'kid filter' on Shadowrun is an insult to the kid's intelligence.

I think that all depends on family values mirikon.

My kid was watching violent movies with me at age 12. By age 14 had a job while getting good grades in school. Has been exposed to alcohol and mild drug use, not to mention sexuality...

My best friends kids... Well, let's just say not so much... Violent movies and games are forbidden to him, let's not even get started on sex, booze, drugs... Job??? Yea right... And he's eligible to vote in 3 months.

My co-workers kid is 16 and has been in and out of rehab and counciling  more times then I care to mention, and is banned from attending every school in the city....

Don't assume you know what happens in other people's homes... You make yourself look like an ass. For all you know, wolfrider comes from a strict household like my best friend (who plays SR with my group).

Seriously some people did not know that? >.> I'm pretty young here probably compared to most of you people out there that may be why I know about THAT video. Just don't watch it, you'll save yourself nightmares i'm sure. I have never seen it my sister has.  She's two years younger than me and she also apparently watched teh "pain olympics" For the love of god why? Now back on topic.

That's pretty cool, I actually hope my kids get into Dungeons and Dragons or Shadowrun or something of the nature. I think it would be fun to watch them grow, and see what their imaginations come up with.

>.> I think I was watching Violent things way before age 12 though.... o.O'

To Wolfrider: Congratulations, I think....

As to that particular video being mentioned? It was faked. A rather disgusting fake, from what I have been told, but faked nonetheless.

I feel bad for your daughter. She may learn things that only years of therapy will cure. I am still bothered that my dad was watching Pulp Fiction.

My friend's 13-year-old daughter plays in our Earthdawn campaign. Prior to that I hadn't played RPGs with anyone younger than college age, but many of my friends essentially grew up playing them with parents or older siblings. So yeah, kids can play RPGs.

Didn't say they couldn't, I was introduced to RPGs by my 4th grade teacher (good ol' red box D&D) as a way to help my reading and basic math skills (it worked spectacularly!)

My point is that Wolfe may be.... Uncomfortable with his daughter playing in the same group with him, listening in on his character's antics... And he may be uncomfortable with the antics his daughter's character gets up to...

Fair enough. Certainly most of us are willing to say and do things around our friends that we wouldn't be comfortable saying or doing around our family.

This is a tough one... PErsonally i cant wait for my bouy to be old enough to play D&D with me. But SHADOWRUN!  :o I dont know... It is definitaly a mature game, PG13 in my opinion...

Then again, as others mentioned, it really depends on your child and who knows her better then you?

Good luck, let us know how it turns out.

OK, there are allot of posts here that are worried about age. My Daughter is 19 so whatever she hears or sees, she was brought up a brilliant, wise thinker and is ready to dismiss horsing around for what it is. Also she has been through allot and I doubt there is anything that will surprise her anymore than anyone else at the virtual table. My worry was that I would not GM as perfectly as she deserves. And as she knows me so well hiding plot features from her will be very difficult. She knows my poker face!. But like I said I got this......no really, I do.......really.

You're going to have to keep reminding yourself that she's not your little girl, she's just another player.  That's the only way to keep things fair.  Other than that, yeah, I think you probably do got this.
