Shadowrun

I can't seem to find any other RPG I wish to get into. Maybe Battletech. I played Werewolf the apocalypse once upon a time. I don't like D&D at all. But I know some D&D players. They also play StarWars. But I hate the D20 system.
-
the games I play are:
1. Shadowrun (of course)
2. Changeling the Lost (with very extra creepy and dark overtones)
3. Call of Cthulhu (Chaosium System)
4. Star Wars (WEG d6 System)
As for preference, SR is my favorite and is therefore in 1st place as it were, and the other 3 are all tied for 2nd place in my eyes. They each have their pro's and con's and are essentially equal in my eyes for various reasons. Take a peek at them, you might like one. =)
-
Thank you voydangel. I'll check out changeling. That's white wolf, right?
-
Battletech is great, especially if you like strategy games like Warhammer. (And, it's a lot cheaper since you don't need to buy all the minis.)
-
Yes it is. White wolf - aka "d10 central". Although, if you don't already have a collection of d10s, I have found that using d6's in place of d10s for any/all White wolf products provides pretty much the exact same gaming experience since they use the same "hit system" as SR4A. If you do the math, they're almost identical. In white-wolfs system 8s, 9s & 10s are considered "hits" - thereby giving you a 30% chance to get a hit on a 1d10 die roll. And since SR4 uses d6(5,6=hit), which is a 33% chance for a hit, you can easily swap the dice out with only a 3% margin of change in success rates for the system.
-
Awesome. I'll go check it out.
-
Savage Worlds, the core rule book is only $10.00, it is easy to pick up, it plays fast, and it can run more or less anything.
-

I had a CBT mini collection with over 900 minis (that counts infantry stands as 1per), the majority collected during the year I was a Commando. I don't think I spend as much as i hear 'hammer armies cost though ;D
-
Other than Shadowrun and D&D 2nd Ed, I am a big fan of Unknown Armies. Some of the creators had also worked on Call of Cthulhu. It's a strange game, mixing magic into the ordinary modern world.
-
D&D 2.0-3.5, Pathfinder, Call of Cthulu almost happened, Deadlands, Savage Worlds almost happened, Werewolf... I don't think we even made it past character creation? Haven't played Malifeaux yet but my DM and I are looking into it. THEMINISARESOPRETTY.

RPGs (a Lot)
------------------------
GURPS,
D20 (D&D 3.x, Starwars D20,Eberron....Next we'll start a crossover "Classic goes Star Wars")
(And NO, It doesn't cause Cancer)
Traveller
Deadlands (Classic)
(maybe ,in 1/2 a Year, Mechwarrior, The Battletech RPG ;) )
I'd Like to Try out Eclipse Phase and Battletech Galactica.
----------------------------
Savage Worlds is a nice, easy RPG
VtM (Werewolf,etc)....I wouldn't advise (No,Sir,not at all).
The Game promises conflict on many Levels ,but all I've seen so far (15 Years of Conventions and I played It myself for several Years I was even Moderator for Vampire Live for some Time) is either Railroading Intrigue or Powergaming of the worst. >:(

I've loved the Mechwarrior Lifepaths for character creation, but the biggest problem with Mechwarrior has always been (and probably always will be) the integration of the game with Battletech. They really are two separate games.

Years Ago we had a long GURPS Battletech Kampaign (12-15 Sessions 1x/Month)
we expanded the 2d6 Battletech Tables to 3D6 so we could Integrate the RPG Rules with the Tabletop Rules. It worked out fine
Our Chars were Part of a Small MERC Company (10 Mechpilots(5 PCs & 5 NPCs), 3 Battallions ...Companies ? ....3x 28 Footsoldiers,1 APC, 1 Dropship
Starwars D20
BUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUURN
No,not at All (I'm impervious to Fire ;) )
Star Wars D6 was OK, but Star Wars D20 gives You wahay more opportunities for Char creation.
In a few Weeks we'll start a D&D 3.x Campaign that starts quite normally, but sooner or later(1-3 level) we'll get Kidnapped by Aliens and my aquatic Hobbit (Rogue /Pirate) will become a Pilot ;D
we're using D20 Dragonstar Rules

I hate class systems. I hate them so much I had to be tasered to not burn the Star Wars D20 book one of my players bought. I how I hate those systems...
-
Battletech RPG (Battletech: Time of War)
Eclipse Phase (any SR fan should check this out) (PM if your interested and I can share you the book (I love Open Source Gaming))
Mechwarrior: Dark Age (it is no longer being produced but I still love it)
Pathfinder (like D&D but better)
Star Wars (D6) (It is how Star Wars was meant to be played)
-
I like classes, myself. :/ I like just picking from a set and going. Character creation for pathfinder goes by in maybe an hour or two, character creation for SR took me... about a month? On and off? With a LOT of revisions? I like being able to point at one of my characters and go "he's a glass cannon/tank/healer/wall/thief." With Code it's "well... he's kinda like this with a little of this and sorta that..."
-
I like open character systems so I mainly play Shadowrun and WoD (Mage mostly).
I have played DnD in the past but haven't for years. I enjoyed Rifts while we played it the world is amazing. Played Earthdawn a little.
-
Shadowrun (forever and always)
DnD 3.5 (death to 4.0)
played VtM and agree, its either powergaming or railroading except for one game that i was in, but it was more dark worlds, and Jacksonville Fl while it had a large vampire population (on all three sides of the fence) only had a small werewolf group and one hunter (npc), but since it was practically the only thing to play i played my werewolf (get of fenris ahroun) as if he was a runner.
(Pri: Mental Sec: Phys Ter: Social) was pack second in command and head of intel and Black ops

I can say that it gets easier each time you create a character... Instead of a month, you'll be able to get it down to a week in no time! ;)

Well, it's better than when we tried to play Werewolf. We opened the books, looked at the blank character sheets, and then sat around and BS'd and laughed about Doom's Dad's rottweiler mix trying to sit on my lap. Now we game here and spend half the session BSing and laughing about my cat drooling on Doom's laptop.
BUT AT LEAST WE MADE IT THROUGH CHARACTER GENERATION! And got in two, three sessions or so. Excluding Pathfinder, this is a record. I think. Since I joined the group anyway.
-
Not only is that a record for any game other than pathfinder it is a personal record for Shadowrun, because I can think of four other occasions where we have tried to get a game going and only one made it past character creation and that didn't make it past the first session.

I agree, same goes for anthing with a "clan", (BT excluded *grin*) "tribe", tradition, etc. I can never find one I like completely and have to shoehorn myself into one. I like systems that allow for a lot of flexability and let one literally create what they want. That's why I liked the Star Wars D6. You werent limited and your character "class" was more of a easy way to describe yourself, not define what you were. You could be a smuggler with a high something that had NOTHING to do with smuggling. Why? Because that's just the way you wanted it; and it was good, and nothing in the rules said you couldnt.
Thats why I like SR too, the "types" are just a general thing, you can literally be anything you want in any combination.
That being said, I still do like Pathfinder. Im not a huge fan of the fantiasy thing, but I have had fun playing my two Rangers and a Paladin. It's a good system and it does offer some flexability, even IF you are hemmed in a bit by having set classes with the inherant restrictions, etc.

I So completely agree.
Additionally, I thoroughly hate level systems as well.
I've heard good things about savage worlds. Anyone who plays it - a Q: Are there levels or classes in the system?

Some of the ones I play are obviously Shadowrun, Red Dwarf, Serenity, Dark Heresy, did for a little while play Call of Cthulhu but lost our GM, also play in a D&D campaign that's pretty entertaining.

Yay! Can you expound a little about the system or it's mechanics, I'm really interested, but unfortunately, even just $10 is a little steep for me at the moment as I am a starving college student for the 2nd time in my life, so I can't just go grab the book like I want to unless I know it's gonna be worth it. Also, if anyone has the savage worlds cthulhu book, I would love to hear about it as well since thats what I'm considering using the system for.

(Sorry, Voyd. Don't mean to interrupt.)
I'm a bit spoiled for gaming right now. Currently playing:
[1] Shadowrun (durr)
[2] Pathfinder Epic 6 campaign startup
[3] Hybrid 3.0/3.5 D&D
[4] KULT, 1st Ed. (The horror...)
We now return you to your regularly scheduled conversation.
-
For anyone that loved D&D 3.5 and felt betrayed by WotC and their GSL, I strongly recommend picking up Pathfinder. It really is D&D 3.5 the way the players want it to be.

I agree, though 4ed was the first time I played DnD. Pathfinder took me some time to learn, but is so much more flexible and I love how Piazo handles PDFs.
Currently playing in a Pathfinder campaign and running Shadowrun online with RPG tools.

How is the Shadowrun game going? I'm thinking of starting a game back home for my friends.
-
Games I've been a player (not GM/Storyteller/DM):
DnD 3.0/3.5/4.0
d20 Modern
Deadlands
Vampire the Masquerade
Vampire the Requiem
Games I've GMed:
Shadowrun 4
d20 Modern
DnD 3.0(Rokugan, Faerun, Homebrew)/3.5(Faerun, Homebrew)/4.0(Homebrew)
New World of Darkness (one mortals game, one mixed supernaturals)
Games I Own and Wish I had the Time to Run:
Exalted 1.0/2.0
Mage the Wakening
Werewolf the Foresaken
Promethean the Created
Changling the Lost
Geist the Sin-Eaters
Mage the Ascension
Vampire the Dark Ages
Of the ones my group has played, Shadowrun is quickly becoming our favorite, but damn do I wish I had the time to run everything I own. I have over four and a half shelves filled with RPG books I've gathered over the years.
Side note: DnD 4.0 actually had the most dynamic characters fitting the fewest stereotypes at maximal flexibility and the game lasted over a year. Sorry 4.0 haters, but when you actually play the system, it's a decent system. Also, 4.0 Faerun does not exist, don't tell me it does.
-
@Chaemera: nWoDs Changeling: the Lost is amazing. If you're into dark, creepy dream/madness/horror games - you should make time ;)
-
Games I have played:
Shadowrun-every edition
D&D/AD&D- every edition
GURPS
WoD- I combine them because I consider them essentially the same
Traveller- First and only time I have had a character die DURING character creation, heard the new game doesn't do that.
TORG-best game ever, but I think it had as much to do with my GM
Champions-4th&5th only, thank god
Marvel- 1st edition only, it wasn't broke, stop trying to fix it
IFGS-This is a boffer weapon LARP, but I include because it was some fun gaming lemme tell you
Star Wars D6 version
Are we counting ccgs and miniatures? That will add a few to the list

I know, it's just one of those cases of working 40+ hours a week, coupled with having people for a game things. I've promised the group another chapter on our year-long 4e campaign at some point in the future, presumably after we wind up this Shadowrun game (don't know if any of them are going to want to ever wind up the shadowrun game, as previously stated, SR4 is quickly becoming our favorite system). However, I might succeed in talking them into a nWoD game, though I don't know which supernatural. Geist has been my favorite (just reading the books, anyways), but Changling is a close second and the wife likes that one, too. That may end up being the deciding factor. . . Wives seem to work that way.
-
I've GMed SR4E for about 3 years.
I've played Star Wars Saga Edition for 2.
Played a game called Anima for a while.
Tried Naruto Tabletop, that died quick though.
And currently a friend has talked me into playing a GURPs game called Transhuman Space.
Gotta say though out of all of them, Shadowrun remains my favorite, the setting and rules are just far better than most in my opinion. The right amount of depth but streamlined enough to run smoothly.
I've just begun playing GURPs and I already think I hate it for the fact that it's just too simple for me rules-wise. Also it tends to favor the GM fudging alot more than other games, which risks making the players apathetic.
-
I play in several games:
1.0 Spycraft
3.0/3.5 Dungeons and Dragons the original Temple of Elemental Evil
4.0 Dungeons and Dragons
4.0 Gamma World
4th edition Shadowrun (most recent)
I GM:
Star Wars Saga system
and maybe in the future 4th Edition Shadowrun after seeing how the system goes in playing it.
-
I'm more of a fan of the earlier SR editions (1-3), but it's probably because of some of the nuances that didn't go to 4th (cursed nostalgia). That and I had every book until 4th hit the shelves...
Ars Magica is fun and encourages creativity and roleplaying (Magic centric system).
I've only played pre-CBT Battletech, but with a few house rules it played out fine (who doesn't like giant robots fighting it out?!).
Cyberpunk is like SR without the magic and amped up craziness and cyber-ness...
Darksword Adventures was a one book system by Weis and Hickman associated with the named trilogy. Roleplay and creativity heavy! It operates on either percentage dice or a paper-rock-scissors related, which worked better when we were out hicking (we adopted this conflict resolution style to other systems when we out and about without dice).
Deadlands, is cool if you're looking for 1800's style play. I haven't played it yet, but I read it through and it has a different feel than the normal systems.
D&D 3-4 (e) is for the MMO generation, because they wanted to ultimately put the games online. AD&D 1-2 (e) was more roleplaying heavy and it has that classic RPG feel (good luck on finding them though - Goblinoid Games makes a clone that's closer to 1st (e) called Labyrinth Lord). 1st (e) was the only game where players had trouble making it through character creation with that optional 0th lvl start, where your characters become their class and stats piece by piece through roleplaying.
Earthdawn is SR in a fantasy setting, minus the tech.
Eclipse Phase is pure scifi with a very streamlined system, you'll see some of the SR influence in it.
GURPS is like playing the tabletop version of Fallout 3, there's even a module for it if you want to go that route. It's like the percentage system of the d20 system, but older (I wouldn't be surprised if WotC was inspired by it when they put together d20).
I've played everything Palladium put out, but out of everything they have I always went back to Rifts. Whenever we had a player that wanted to play a certain character in a particular system we could almost always convince them to play it in Rifts, where it could make sense that they would suddenly appear.
I'm very pro WEG Starwars (d6). It always played out smoother than d20 and it'd be easier for SR players since they have plenty of the dice. Starwars is a open license right now since Lucas yanked it from WotC, because of where they were going with Saga (my brothers a moderator on the WEG SW site, so I know way to much of what's going on).
Warhammer Fantasy is an RPG, not wargame. It's set in the named setting and it plays out kinda like Earthdawn with a Warhammer feel (they aren't making it anymore). There is also the 40K RPG, which I've read but haven't played. If you like the universe from the books or the VG's then head in full bore.
WoD and Exalted are for college players that have that "middle of the night out of your minds" moments, but you have to do your homework because they don't clearly chart anything (or they didn't before they reboot their worlds).
My group gathered together our favorite things from every system and universe and ran with crazy home-brewed fun. Try it, you might not go back!
-
There is a new edition of Warhammer Fantasy RolePlay. But it's more akin to the ned DnD, with even more weird things, like skill cards, special dice, and stuff that 'you need to buy to play'.

If they did it any other way, they wouldn't be GW.
-
L5R(1st 2nd and 3rd Edition)
Dark Heresy
Shadowrun 4th(Have run all previous editions.)
Of course play is a relative term. I have been GMing pretty much exclusively for the last 10 years.
-
I played all the Old World of Darkness games.
I played Aberrant, Trinity, and Adventurer.
Deadlands is good fun, mad science is awesome till you critically fail on your zep. It's still fun after that, but parachutes become your dear dear friend.
I played Exalted First Ed, still play second Ed.
Used to play SR2, and we were jonesing as group for something a bit different so I volunteered to run SR4 and just started lurking to rip off lovingly borrow good ideas.
Had all the original ED stuff, but never got to play it. Same with Battletech.
Oh and I played DnD for one campaign before we discovered Vampire.
Basically I'm a big WW whore...
-
Used to GM Deadlands, especially loved Hell On Earth. 'Course, I'm a major Post Apocalyptic and Cyberpunk fan, so that's no surprise to my group.
I liked how bullets were currency in most communities (Something I loved about Metro 2033 as well!), and my group figuring out just how much trouble someone was worth, and using the right kind of ammo to make it affordable to kill it.
Or, as one player intimidated an annoying NPC with, "You're $4 worth of trouble right now. My bullets cost $5 each. Don't become a more expensive problem."
-
Aside from the SR4 I'm co-GMing, I'm playing Exalted 2E and DnD 4E. Was running Deadlands Reloaded but that's on hiatus for a bit.
-
There are quite a lot of systems I've played (next to Shadowrun). The latest where we have played campaigns:
-Legends of the Five rings (3rd edition)
-Mage the Awakening (ongoing)
-Warhammer RPG (ongoing)
-Exalted (2nd edition)
-Alternity (Stardrive)
-
I've been getting back into Call of Cthulhu lately. Shoggoths for everyone!
-
Just about to wrap up Pathfinder for a while....now I get to GM and am going to subect the group to S4...
*insert evil, manical laughter*
-
On occasion, 3E Vampire, Werewolf and/or Mage (rarely crossovers). I have a long history with L5R, which is my second-favourite game ever. And sometimes the random GURPS one-shot.
I advise everyone to check L5R (http://www.l5r.com/) out if you can (and like feudal the Japan theme) or, from the same developer, 7th Sea (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/7th_Sea_(role-playing_game)) if you're the swashbuckler type.

I think there's a problem with Alderac, as all sites of Alderac seem to be down.

I'm getting through fine. Maybe it's on your end?

Nope. I'm getting through fine now as well. Must have been a temporary thing.

Where are those times... (http://syndicate.lubie.org/)
AAAAAAHHHHH!!!!

I read an article somewhere a few weeks back that they're making a new Syndicate Wars game...

Say where did you read that or Im going to use my intimidation and torturer skillz to make you remember :o
-
My group love to mix things up, so we have plenty of games between us. Our "common" games are:
Shadowrun (of course ;) )
Blue planet
Fading suns
Dark heresy
Vampire: the masquerade (oWoD)
Eon
Pathfinder
But we also play:
Unknown armies
Neotech
Viking
Werewolf
Paranoia
Nephilim
Call of cthulhu
Mutant (Undergångens arvtagare, gamla mutant & mutant 2)
Gemini
D&D 4th ed (not a big fan...)
Star wars (D6)
Drakar & Demoner
And at least I am currently interested in getting:
A time of war (battletech)
Eclipse phase.
Dogs in the vineyard
The dark eye
-
D&D 2nd and 3rd Edition (Currently using Paizo's Pathfinder rules viva 3.75). Planescape and Dark Sun settings.
Shadowrun 3rd and 4th (Currently GMing SR4 and trying to get someone else to GM it).
Star Wars Saga Edition (Recently GMed a game where they were working for the ISB).
40Ks Dark Heresy, Rogue Trader, and Death Watch.
D20 Modern *tear*.
-
I read an article somewhere a few weeks back that they're making a new Syndicate Wars game...
Say where did you read that or Im going to use my intimidation and torturer skillz to make you remember :o
I'm feeling strangely compelled to tell you...
I read it on one of the gaming sites like ign. Search for rumor+syndicate or "Project Redlime" and you'll find a million articles! Apparently it's splattered all over facebook as well. EA registered 3 new trademarks that all involved Syndicate. Starbreeze Studios is the EA-sub that is doing the project. Rumor has it that it won't release until after the next Bourne game, but they have been working on the New Syndicate since '07.
-
Games I run:
HackMaster
Warhammer FRP 1st and 2nd Ed.
Dark Heresy/Rogue Trader/Deathwatch
Aces & Eights
Palladium Fantasy 1st Ed
Shadowrun (mainly 3rd)
-
Just finished the first book of the "Dawn of Defiance"-campaign for Star Wars Saga, really charming so far with lots of good stuff for the little jedi inside us all...
-
Right now I'm in a Deathwatch campaign, which easily includes Dark Heresy and Rogue Trader. Shadowrun is in the que as is Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 3.
I really like Scion, old Vampire the Masquarde, but enjoyed the new Mage and Werewolf. Played in a year long D&D 4 ed. and could not tell you if it is any good or not. I liked Eclipse Phase. My 7th Sea and Legend of the Five Rings collection is small, but well placed in my heart.
-
I know there's going to be haters out there, but... Rock Band 3.
I'm wondering if I might be able to pick up one of those stringed guitars they now have at a pawn shop later on when some rich kid finds out that "Playing instruments is hard!" and get it at a decent price.
-
I know there's going to be haters out there, but... Rock Band 3.
Hater's gunna hate, but I brought RB3 and two guitars on my last road trip. Too bad the house had a nice TV with a craptacular setup (no access to HDMI port), we couldn't set it up.
I'm wondering if I might be able to pick up one of those stringed guitars they now have at a pawn shop later on when some rich kid finds out that "Playing instruments is hard!" and get it at a decent price.
Take a look at the Squier Stratocaster one, if you can find it. It's set up like a normal SS with MIDI support, but it also includes the additional data that RB3 needs (which is why you can't just plug a MIDI guitar into the Mad Katz converter). The other model, the Fender Mustang, has 102 fret buttons and a string box. I don't like the idea, I figure if I'm going to take the time to learn how to play in Pro mode then I'll learn on a proper axe.
-
There's enough pawn shops in the city that I can probably get a real guitar damned cheap...
-
That's fine, but if you're going to try to use it with RB3 Pro Mode you'll find that a regular guitar won't work.
-
No RPGs really atm, no group. Midland Texas appears to be a RPG-destitute place.
But when I could/can:
Shadowrun (any edition works for me)
Warhammer Fantasy RPG (2nd edition)
AD&D (2nd preferred, but 3.5 is ok)
Mass Effect 2
Baldur's Gate series
