Title: Null Mage - Thought Experiment for comment
Post by: Aria on <10-19-12/0812:55>
She may not be a really useful character as she's a bit of a one trick pony but I'm hoping you can all offer some suggestions to improve her.  She's probably always going to be a 'support' character and certainly wouldn't work well solo.  I'm also slightly concerned about her lack of stealth but as most of my adepts have a large helping of it I thought I'd try for something a bit different for a change.

So, is she fundamentally flawed?  She's an NPC in one of my games and not a runner but I'd like to think that this sort of concept might have a role in a SR team...?!?

Thanks

I think you can tweak things a bit to have a workable character.

1) You have 4 Charisma, 5 Logic, no Logic skills or cyberware, and 2 foci. You'd be better off with a 2-3 Logic, 5 Charisma, and a Charisma tradition.

2) No summoning or binding is shooting yourself in the foot big time; it's cheap to have Summoning 1, and spirits with Magical Guard can teamwork your Counterspelling as well as help out in other ways.

3) I think you have too many mehhh physical combat skills. I'd just take Pistols and Dodge and call it a day.

4) Parazoology (spirits) is very handy if you want to be good at dealing with magical threats and other mages. Quite a lot of magical threats are one-trick ponies that have one really, really nasty cheap trick; it's very good to be able to know what that trick is before your entire team is paralyzed or something like that.

5) Your 1 additional spell should be Mana Static. I would really have more spells, too. I would suggest grabbing Sound Cloud (WAR!), so you have a way of dealing with groups of living opponents.

6) A Yamaha Sakura Fubuki with Stick-n-shock is a good idea.

7) What is that "Manipulation Focus?" Is it Spellcasting? I don't suggest bonding low-rating foci like that at chargen, because they have to be thrown out to be replaced.

8) Counterspelling foci suck. They only add to one school, and they aren't cost-efficient because of that. Save up your piggy bank for a Shielding Focus, which is much better (it's more expensive, but covers all schools).
