I want to give something a try, I have no idea if this will work. But the premiss is this.
Give me your charecter the only restriction is you're not allowed to open the shadowrun book and look at crunch and mechanics.
What does this mean?
It goes something like this.
I want to plaaaayyyy, Hmmmm, treasure hunter, he goes in to the most dangerous of places searching for knowledge. He's living in LA and currently is exploring the deep lacuna. He has to rely on a lot of friends to survive down there so we could say he's quite socially competent, he has a bunch of contacts smugglers a mage group and a couple of fixers to get the meat sehilds,
Hes got a phd in arcanoarcheology, used to work for the atlantean foundation at one point but left for (insert plot point here).
In his free time he travels a lot mostly to historical places of power. And so on and so forth,
At which point i'll go "All right I like it, take two group contacts and 4 profesional contacts up to loyalty 3 and 3 personal contacts loyalty 4+.
You can have a mini sub and a couple of range rovers for free. You didn't really emphasize his combat skills, so when you build him keep his combat skills about the 12 dicepool mark. Make sure his knowlege skills are up to scratch and so on and so forth.
Now go build your character no bp limit. Just dont take the piss.
The purpose here is to create interesting well grounded characters, and a campaign the revolves around them and what they want to do. It will be relititively sandbox, and I wont know the metaplot untill ive seen your charecters. Essentialy Its up to you to inspire me amd go from there.
-
Well, I find the idea interesting... but there should be a BP limit, for one. Also... shadowrunners aren't exactly sandbox types, unless this isn't a shadowrunner game. I would love to play in a game, I'm just a little leery of the concept you're putting out so far.
-
I understand this can seem a little odd. Im relying on the players not to build anything too rediculous. If someone builds a 1000 bp monster im likely to say no.
But what it comes down to it that really interested to see what people can do if not restricted by character gen. It might not work, and It might wont really know until I see what people come up.
-
I'll give it a try, it should be fun
BA
-
Edit: Changed my mind, actually, sorry. Not playing.
-
I'll hop into this. Should I just keep it rouhgly below 600 BP or something, for reference?
-
If you need a reference keep it under 600 bp, but dont feel restricted is the main point of the thread. remember its not about power its about creating the charecter you're most going to enjoy playing (though for some thats the same. this probably isn't a game for them)
-
I'll pop in and say I am interested I have an idea of a character. He's a mix of B&E & Gun man. I need to write his background first though, I could post something tomorrow or the next day.
-
Like I said for for it.
-
Sounds interesting, I'll keep an eye on this.
-
agreed
I´ll sleep on it and try to come up with a concept tomorrow
EDIT:
What is your general take on non-Metahumans? Specifically I would be interested in playing a shapeshifter. I already have a rough idea about a background, but if you generally wont allow shapeshifters, I wouldnt take the time to write it up.
-
shapeshifters are fine. but remebrits really rare for some types of them to be awakened. Te tiger and lions for example.
-
I was more thinking of a jaguar-shapeshifter adept.
3 sentence background(obviously to be expanded)
[name] was recruited into the amazonian forces and was active as a scout behind enemy lines in the amazonian-atzlan War. But when his brother got captured by bounty hunters for unknown reasons he left the forces and went after him. He only has one small clue about his brothers location which has lead him to [starting city of the campaign], but his search requires more money than he had available, so he has to use his talents to do whats necessary.
He basically has the "Lost Loved One" flaw on Steroids
-
Okay so the submissions ive had so far all all well and good.
I think what everyone is slightly lacking in is a deep involvement in something. Whether that be a corporation, an obsession, syndicates dragons ais spirits. Side projects.
Searching for a long lost sibling, or seeking revenge for your parents is obviously going to be a characters core motivation. But thats not instant and there are going to be many things that happen on that path,
Well lets take kane as an example, searching for his lost love, what did he become in the process one of the most famous pirates and runners who lived. All so he could blow 100milion on a job to rescue his lost love.
If you so wish your character might be deeply entrenched undercover in a corp, or leading a resistance. They could be explorers for the atlantean foundation, or well anything you like. If your just have your one goal you're going to hop from mission to mission not being proactive. If you have goals, and obsessions then you'll be saying, "Beofer we take another run I want to do this this and this"
The characters are missing the middle part of the story. That means you'll be led by the champaign instead of leading it around

This is a concept, so I'll throw this out there.
John Doe was your average wageslave for Aztechnology. From as long as he can remember, he had been involved with the Aztechnology archology. His parents worked for them, he was born and raised an Aztechnology child. He even met his wife through the company. His wife was leading a special project for Aztechnology, one which would have put them in a monopoly position in the soy business. Aztechnology being what it is, they had a very tight leash on our hero's wife. When they heard the rumour that another of the Big Ten were preparing an extraction, they decided to take her away to an undisclosed location. However, when a team of runners tried to (unsuccesfully) hit that new location, Aztechnology knew they had a mole. They quickly tried to smoke it out, but to no avail.
With paranoia setting in, management was feeling a threat to their already dominant position, so they decided to destroy the special project in order to prevent others from obtaining it. They didn't leave any loose ends, taking care of John's wife as well and making it look like a suicide. John was distraught, but believed what Aztechnology told him.
It was not until a few months later that a team of runners, hired by Shiawase, gave an unaltered copy of the autopsy to John in the hopes of recruiting him. It clearly indicated there had been a struggle and a strangulation, not a hanging. But the worst part of the autopsy was that John's wife was pregnant.
This tipped John over the edge. He left Aztechnology then and there, but didn't throw himself in the arms of Shiawase; he instead vowed to try and do all he could to destabilize Aztechnology's position, wherever that might lead him.

My birth name is Aiko Fujiwara. This will be the only time I will ever put my past down in print, so listen closely because I will only say this once.
I was born in Osaka, Japan. My father is Yusake Fujiwara and my mother Yumi Fujiwara. To them I was a miracle baby. They had all but given up hope of having child when my mother got pregnant with me. My father is an executive with Shiawase corp. I remember the love and pride my parents showed in me those wonderful years.
I wasn’t until after my 10th birthday that Father said we needed to go down to the biotech division at Shiawase for some screenings. He said this would help then understand and create better workers and executives.
This the day my life changed. I remember my father being very upset and would not even talk to me. At times he seemed to be yelling and threatening the staff. I was driven home without a word from my father. Later that night, peeking through the door I saw my father come into the house drunk and waving a gun. He hit my mom and pointed the gun at her head and yelled at her to tell him why Aiko was not his daughter and demanding to know who her father was. My mother finally broke down and told him that while they were in Germany she had an affair. I never was able to hear his name, but it seemed to enrage father all the much more. In the heat of his anger he shot my mother in the head. I was in total shock and crying like no tomorrow. How could father do this to mother, how?
The next thing I remember is being driven by my fathers most trusted assistant in the middle of the night to a nondescript building. I was rushed in and the old woman inspected me like a piece of meat. After this I was thrown in a cell with a bed and told to I was now the property of The Yamatsu Geisha House and I was to start training tomorrow. I remember screaming for my father and begging for him to end this.
The next few years seemed like a blur, I was trained in the traditional Geisha roles and in the arts of seduction and literature. I became to be close to a few of my sister/mentors. I also started to awaken to my magic during this time. My sister’s helped me hide it for the Madame of the house. I learned well but always yearned to escape and on my 16th birthday I got my chance. Before the Virginity auction ceremony I changed my appearance and left the House. My Sister Keiko had arranged for passage on a ship headed from Seattle. The escape was nearly flawless. I heard later the Keiko was questioned and killed concerning my escape. The email I got said that she never betrayed me and was true to the end. It was the first time in a long time I cried myself to sleep with love and sadness in my heart.
Seattle was an eye opener. It made Osaka look like an uptight old man in comparison. For the first week or so I hid and learned to speak English and try and understand this strange place I had come to. It wasn’t long before I was invited to an underground street club. The first glance it felt strange and alien, but in a weird way I felt like I was home in place people didn’t care what are but who you want to be. It was in this time that I meet the enigma known as fixer-X. He helped me get my first biotattoo and was my first love. We were like fire and gasoline, explosive. He taught me how to live and what it was like to get high. He is my best friend, lover at times and bane of my existence. I know I can’t live with him, but I can’t live without him and he feels the same way.
It seems the Madame of the geisha house in Osaka had lost face when I left her employ as I did and sent an assassin to kill me as message that no one escapes her employ for long. It was quite a tense moment when he found me in Seattle. Fixer-X was with me at the time and between the two of us we were able to kill him. To this day I don’t know what Fixer-X did with the body nor do I care.
After the body was disposed of Fixer-X contacted a few people we knew to get a nasty letter from the local Yakuza Boss sent to the Madame explaining that he was not happy to find her assassin in his territory without his blessing and her assassin will not be returning home. A friend on Fixer-X by the name of Zipper-head found the codes the assassin used to contact and sent a message to her explaining that the job had been done.

One problem I have in writing a detailed background with very specific motivations is the lack of a starting location.
If we have one character who wants to explore the Deep Lacuna, another who wants to free his loved one who is held by Atzlan somewhere in South America, and another Char wanting to become a member of a Urban Brawl team in Berlin, thats all well and good, but any reason why those 3 chars would be in the same city working together would feel forced.
So I´d say we need to agree on a city where we meet and use that as a baseline on character background and motivations.
-
So I'll throw may hat in, I've written a background for him AKA the Suit or just Suit:
My name Trenton Smith, that is unimportant now, I grew up in a wage slave family serving in Renraku Cyberware division. At the age of 5 I was identified through internal employee child testing and was placed in a prestigious company school. As a sign of good fortune for my future my parents signed a child employment contract that would place me in Renraku’s employ when I came of age.
The contract that parents signed, unknown to them was for youth training as part of Renraku internal security, a precursor to the Red Samurai Corps. So my youth was spent in the class room during the school year but during the summer I was sent to company funded “youth camp” learning military doctrine and weapon use. When I turned 13 I turned, my human parents were so proud an elf in the family. Soon my reflexes and speed increased this also marked a turning point in my training I was sent to Company boarding school another training camp.
When I was 16 my family was honored with an apartment in the new Renraku Arcology I was still in school when the Arcology event happened. Worry for my family lead me to excel at my training knowing one day Renraku would send in the Red Samurai. Took another 16 months before I joined junior team 9 my first mission was Operation Cold Cuts.
Operation Cold Cuts an information gathering mission into the Arcology, to make a long story short it went bad. I found my parents, lost my arm, got shot three times, and was left to die floating in the Sound. I was found on pier 12 and was taken to a downtown medical facility, patched up and was sent a notice by Renraku that my services was no longer needed. It was cheaper for Renraku to send 20,000 as severance instead of hiring a runner team to kill me, there mistake. Most teams would have taken 5,000 to kill someone in a bed.
I’ve been told I’m on an endless crusade against my old employer. I’ve been running the shadows for some time now trying to get back at the Corp that ruined my family.
-Trenton Smith is dead.

Well lone wolf, things will come to pass even if I have to involve dragons and clowns (joking).
I already have an idea how the characters can get together and be on the same side. Just trust that I can manage it.
though it shouldnt be needed. most of the characters travel enough and have long enough histories that they could have many reasons to be just about anywhere on earth.

When starting to put together the stats for my jaguar Shapeshifter I found something that must be a typo:
In the Attribute Table(Page 86), the Agility is listed as 5/8(12). I think it should either be 5/10(15) or 3/8(12). The same typo is in the table at the tiger shapeshifter.
Since there is no Errata for the Runners Compendium(except the german printing which I dont have access to) I need a GM ruling on this.
-
5(8)12. It makes up for not being able to get ware.
-
First rough draft of my character:
Geth (http://www.myth-weavers.com/sheetview.php?sheetid=474168)
Equipment is still on the to do list, but I dont think he will have much besides weapons, armor and commlink
Background
The scent is nauseating, the noise is shrilling, there is hardly ever any suitable prey to hunt around and most troubling, you can hardly see any stars at night: I hate cities.
So what has led me from my home in the amazonian rainforest to this smog infested "city of angels"? The bonds of family.
I was born 7 years ago in the amazonian half of what once was Columbia. While my parents both were shapeshifters like me, we rarely took human form during the 4 years it took me to mature but mostly lived like the natural hunters that we were. A simple existence, but with some knowledge of the world beyond our territory. During that time I also formed a unusually strong bond with my brother, especially after we separated from our parents. Usually my kind is rather solitary, but the two of us belonged together, even though we were quite different. He was always the dreamer, curious about the world and wanting to go out to explore it, while I was the more conservative, protecting what we had. If it wouldn't be tragic, one might think its funny how that turned out.
Then war came to our forest. We had to either risk our lives in staying where we were, move somewhere else or stand our ground and defend against those Atzlan aggressors. This was the day when I chose a different path than my brother. He didn't believe in the war and moved east while I stood up to defend our home and joined the amazonian forces. I received some formal training, especially what modern warfare was concerned, but mainly my natural hunting powers and stealth were put to good use. They helped me focus some of my abilities that they named "adept powers" and which I until then had only used sporadicly. While I also learned to use their modern tools, I never trusted them, since somehow they all seem to stop working when in my hands. Just a few old style melee and throwing weapons really enriched my arsenal.
Scout, guerrilla and assassin were all words used to describe my role in the war. Few others could move as undetected through the jungle as I could. But after another successful operation, I got the news that a poaching crew had captured my brother while the amazonian authorities were stretched thin in areas not affected by the war. I went after him but only found a small group of amazonian humans that had helped the poachers. I let one of them live, so he could spread the story and to have it work as a deterrence. I also got the information on the freighter that transported my brother out and some low quality pictures of the poachers. Following the freighter brought me to LA where I once again have few leads, and following them costs more money than I have. But going back is not an option. Im wanted in Amazonia for desertion and murder, so I have no choice but to sell my talents and time to finance my continued search here, no matter how much I hate the city or the work.
I don't have it in me to give up on my brother cause that would mean all i did was in vain.
-
I really like the charecter, the stats are reasonable and make sense, the powers and qualities are good. And the background is solid, not too extravagant, well grounded. I would ask you too come up with something your charecter might have become "involved in" in the last few months.
-
I have finished the character sheet and included the enhanced background in there. I also decided that Geth has made contact with the Koshari in LA and has worked for them in a freelance capacity in exchange for money and the promise of help in looking for his brother.
-
Ok guys anyone who hasn't come up with a first draft of your charecter sheet. Probably wont start this for a few days yet so we all have time, also theres no problem with people turning up late., But yes. Charecter drafts will be good.
-
Sorry Katrex, but I applied to as many games as I could and got in to more than I thought I would. I don't want to spread myself too thin, so I'll have to bow out of this. However, if anyone wants to use my concept, you have my blessing. I was seeing this character as more of a hacker/rigger, but whatever the person picking up the concept wants is fine by me. I am totally surrendering the concept to whomever wants to take it.
Good luck all and I'll be keeping an eye on this thread. It sounds promising.
-
I need to step back from this game. I have a few two many running at this moment. Free-form shadowrun sounds like a great addition to the forum. I hope you guys cam get it up and running.
Good luck and have fun.

just curious:
Is this game kicking of at some point or are there too few submissions?
-
Im waiting on black angel renegade and serious one. Buty if they dont respond I guess its not happening.
-
I guess its a little late, but I was thinking that a game with fewer players might also be interesting. There would be even more time to focus on each characters personal goals and issues. And I guess in Shadowrun you can easily play without having all the "teamroles" filled, depending on the actual run.
What do you guys think?
-
Yep but I want 3. Otherwise it doesnt feel right. Thats Lone, Black angel... so waiting on serious one to confirm hes playing, otherwise someone elsew could step in
-
This sounds interesting, and I would like to throw in my hat if you're still looking for another.
Concept for character:
Stealth based spec ops type, some cyber enhancements, but not quite to the level of street samurai. Prefers close up battles, relying on cyber combat for quick takedowns and grenades for distraction and herding enemies. I have played with the idea of him being a were-fox that has been trapped in human form due to cyber parts (most likely bone lacing), and would need to build in some kind of addiction to a drug to suppress the were-critter regeneration, keeping him from rejecting he parts he does have. However, if you already have the one were-person, I can just go with standard metahuman instead.
Let me know if you think this will mesh, and I will work up a full sheet.

katrex,
Don't know if this died or not, but I think it'd be cool. I was thinking of a playing a former fixer turned technomancer/face. He was just starting to make a name for herself in Atlanta (or insert city of origin) when she emerged in the middle of the 2071 (if I recall the date correctly, whenever Emergence is set). He tried to hide who he had become for as long as she could, but people find out everything in the shadows. Losing Johnson after Johnson, he finally gave up and shipped out, using the contacts that would still talk to her to set up as a runner in (insert city we'd be running), as well as finding someone (or something) to guide her on this new path.
Mechanically, I'd build heavily into social attributes, connections, and a stack of cash. Skills would match, with either a lot of low-point technomancer stuff or a narrower, higher value pool (haven't decided)
