Title: Limited Engagement: On The Run
Post by: jonathanc on <11-30-12/0316:49>
Historical note: This adventure takes place in early 2070; as such, Lone Star still has the police contract in Seattle, the Tempo craze has not yet occurred, The Ork Underground has no prospect of becoming an official district, and Hestaby has not yet burned down Lofwyr's holdings in Dubai.

If none of the above makes any sense to you, please disregard this disclaimer.

Winter in Seattle, and like most days, it's raining. Work has been lean, with no high-profile corp or syndicate wars, and Lone Star out in force for another one of their "visibility campaigns". You, like many lesser-known Shadowrunners, just don't have the connections to keep the work rolling in during times like this. You need more street cred, but without a decent run on the horizon, that's going to be a tall order. The day passes without incident as you make your usual rounds, but as the day passes into evening you receive a call from Smiley, that ork fixer who gave you his card a couple of weeks ago.

"Hey baby, I think I got a job for you. Looks pretty simple, totally doable with your skillset. I'm gonna be calling up some of those other cats I saw you with when we first met - I need you all to meet Mr. Johnson at 21:00. The spot is Infinity, downtown. There's this hot 'lil elf tending bar - tell her you're with the Johnson party and she'll show you where to go. Dress for success. I got a reputation to uphold, so I don't want you getting held up at the door for looking like yesterday's trash."

Perhaps you'll be making rent this month after all.

The message from Smiley overlaid itself on Lynx's view of the rain-slicked road ahead and she sighed inwardly as she read it.  She had heard about Smiley through a friend a few weeks back and had met for a quick chat where they'd discussed the current lack of work, but at the time she'd expected her normal jobs to pick up soon and she hadn't seriously considered actually needing to got out 'on a run'.  She normally wouldn't get involved in the hands-on part of running the shadows, much preferring to remain on the sidelines, but the recent lack of activity on the gang front had resulted in a serious decrease in demand for her services.  Coupled with the recent crackdown by Lone Star which required her to spend a lot more time planning each job, she'd barely made anything this month - even the profit from the delivery of contraband electronics she'd made earlier that afternoon would only cover a week's rent.

"Well, haven't really got a choice I suppose," she thought wryly to herself, "This dry spell shows no signs of stopping any time soon, and a job is a job.  Besides, if what Smiley says is true, should be fairly straightforward.  Might even enjoy it!"

Her mind made up, she fired off a quick message to Smiley acknowledging the meeting time with a thought.  "Should be able to get home in about twenty mins or so, which will give me about an hour to get ready before I have to leave.  Now, what to wear...", she thought as she drove home through the darkening streets of Seattle.

------ Later that evening --------

Lynx stood off to one side in the main bar area sipping a mojito, and kept a discreet eye on the elf girl behind the bar to see who asked for the Johnson party.  While the black dress she was wearing was last year's style and would probably get her laughed at by party girls at the city's top nightspots, it hadn't caused any problems at the door at least.  She'd arrived early to the club, traffic not being quite as bad as she had expected, and had decided to spend a little time checking to see who else had been invited to the meet before introducing herself.

Holding a glass of Jimmy Lee's best scotch under the light, he smiled. The drek was almost too good, and too expensive, to sully by putting your lips to it, but Jimmy didn't mind. Not the scotch, not the car, not the apartment. Jimmy was dead. Fiftyfour'd, to be precise. So long as Tian Lu kept the payments high and regular, Mr Lee was on "indefinite supported leave". The glass cracked slightly under brushed steel fingers, as he thought on just how little work there had been recently to keep things afloat, let alone support other costs.

When Smiley called, he almost tossed the glass while flicking it over to text only. The reply was terse, but then he wasn't about to blow hot air up his fixer unless the job needed it. "I'll be there," he mashed back into the commlink.

First things first, though. He was going to finish that scotch.

== Infinity ==

Tian Lu cut through the crowd outside; an imposing figure in a split trenchcoat of black and silver hexagonal patterns, obvious cyber showing through slits as he walked. A solid reflective mask swept from his hairline down to a sharp point over his nose. After a quiet exchange with the lead bouncer at the door, he walked in, tipping 500¥ in the process.

Inside, leaning back against the bar, he kept an ear on the elf cutie. It was just a matter of time before someone said the magic words. Smiley reckoned he knew the rest of the hired 'runners, so he might as well nod to any other early comers. Drink in one hand and cigar in the other, he had all the appearance of looking relaxed, while still ready to flip tasers on the crowd if things went South.

Ryan looked down into his beer and sighed before sending his response "Yeah I’ll be there Smiley." He’d worked with Smiley a few times before and most of the jobs had gone over smoothly, but Ryan couldn’t help but have that familiar twinge of uncertainty as he stood up. He walked over to his closet and peered inside at the rumpled pile of dirty jeans some with obvious blood stains. “Of course I’ve gotta by new clothes, why wouldn’t I?” He drained the rest of his beer and shot a message to Silvia as he started the job of putting everything in order for the evening. “Hey Darlin’ I was wondering if you might know anything about a club called Infinity. Hell I don’t even know what I should wear to the place.” He paused and thought about how to end the message because their relationship status was a fluid thing. “Hope I can see you soon.”

Looking for info on what to expect inside (layout, security, general info), how to get past bouncer, any one who might be of interest, what kind of clothes to wear, ect.

Hitch's Apartment

Hitch looks askance at the Manservant drone as he enters his new apartment, still not used to the layout after only a week living in it. Stupid thing seems to only be working when I get home... he mutters mentally as he kicks off his shoes while shrugging out of the damp leather jacket. A late, and fruitless, night spent at Russo's rumpled his suit and his attitude. He gave the drone a kick as he walked by, forgetting he had just removed his shoes, then hopped around on one foot mouthing curses at the machine.

An hour later, he woke up in his now even more rumpled suit, curled up on his faux-leather couch. A plate of a good approximation of eggs and some krill-bacon was waiting on the coffee table. "Worried I'll replace ya?" Hitch asked the idling Manservant in the corner. He shrugged then dug right into the plate.

Some time later, parts of his clothing had been strewn about as comfort dictated, Hitch was well into a raging discussion on which set of Star Wars trilogies were the best when a message popped into his overlay. He only jumped into the Matrix when he had to, otherwise he left it on with multiple AROs showing whatever bit of entertainment or knowledge he wanted at the moment.

The only reason he read Smokey's--Smiley's--message was the time code. "Damn it's late," he muttered struggling to get up amidst clacking bones and protesting muscles. He read the message in the shower and pulled up the publicly accessible info on Infinity--he'd been there before and reviewed the notes he left for himself, which wasn't much.

Opening his writePad app, Hitch crafted a personalized thank you note to Smiley and confirming he'll be attending. Even after paper became unnecessary, Etiquette 101 was still about handwritten notes. He carved the image into the shape of a smiley face and sent it off.

The manservant drone was laying out his other good suit when he walked out of the bathroom. It scurried away, with some dignity, and Hitch shouted thanks after its retreating form.

Infinity

Hitch made a show at arriving in front of Infinity, parking his motorcycle amongst the others across the front entrance only ten minutes before 21:00. He approached the bouncer with confidence and a little smile, not mindful of the machine pistol in his concealed holster. The leather jacket he wore on top of the suit did a good enough job of hiding the bulk.

In truth, he'd arrived a good half hour earlier but stopped a short distance away. He let out his two, nearly invisible drones, and scouted the area. It was almost expected of him to hack into Infinity's node and peruse the guest list, but he wouldn't do that tonight. Tonight was about covering one's ass and preventing one's foot from entering a mouth or any other orifice.

Hitch didn't bother scanning the crowd for familiar faces, just greeting those who looked like they wanted to be greeted, and smoothly made his way to the bar. He ordered iced water, the expensive kind, and flashed a smile at the pretty elf lady behind the counter. He chatted her up for a few minutes then brought up that he had to meet the Johnson party.

"Maverick" - he really ought to think up a more creative name - was among the first customers sitting at the currently mostly empty stripper joint "Hellizabeth" was supposed to work at later tonight. Lighting a cigarette from his damp pack, he took the beer he'd ordered and seated himself upfront, scanning the messages on his 'link. Yeah, sure, I need a penile implant to impress the ladies... really should start paying in cash when I'm here. Some more spam filed before his eyes, each one deleted by a tap of his finger on a virtual UI. Smiley's message came up as the disgruntled adept was about to give up. Well, that could be interesting, and it looks right up my alley too.

Looking up the incoming commcode, he shot a quick audio message back to Smiley. "I'll be there at 21:00, but don't expect me to wear some NuZoot or whatever's trendy right now." He then quickly shot a message to his favorite dancer to see when she'd be on stage. He still had a few hours to kill after all.

At the Infinity
When Maverick finally got to the door for the club, he'd been waiting in line for nearly an hour already. Even his waterproof duster had finally called it quits, and he had had no choice but to buy a stupid umbrella from a clever peddler hawking his wares to the soaked club-goers who had not the privilege of being on the guest list. The thing had the dubious benefit of having an illuminated shaft in the middle, and if he was savvy into 20th century movies, Maverick might have felt like he was holding a lightsaber topped with hexagonal canvas. The bouncers looked about as happy to let him in as he had been happy to soak in the rain, and he didn't really want tipping either of them until they subtly pointed out there was a "cover charge" for people wanting in. Maverick had been nice enough to leave his body armor at home, and only carried his Predator under his left arm, and the clip wasn't even inserted, being in his coat pocket mostly likely wet now.

Once inside, he subscribed to the club's PAN with his public commlink, he discards the various offers he immediately receives, keeping his vision clear except for a map overlay of the place and the AR menu of the bar, through which he pays for another beer that he will be picking up as soon as he makes his way to the bar, nodding to Hitch, Lynx and Tian Lu as he notices each of them. Once he spots the "elf cutie" - he's yet to see an elf who wasn't, but when mentioned it, she had to be a real looker - he waves her over, using the ordered beer as a pretense to get her to look at him. As she hands him the bottle, he makes an AR bubble visible only to her comm with the phrase "Where's the Johnson party?".

OOC Note: From Smiley/Jonathanc's first post, it would seem some if not all of the characters know each other, if only from having seen the others' faces at a meet with Smiley, so I'm playing along with that. We can retcon later if needed. Also, having used club Infinity in my own games, I'm aware of its layout and perks, such as the pair of trolls at the door and color-coded privacy rooms, though I haven't done the On the Run mission itself.

McClane rubbed his eyes, careful not to dislodge his contact lenses. He had spent pretty much all day looking for new spell formulae and his image link was displaying the rewarding 'Download Complete' signal over the left side of his sight. This also meant another good chunk of Nuyens taken from his account and if he didn't get a job soon, it was gonna be a rough month. He was craving a drink, a well deserved one for once. But the fridge and cupboards of the cubicle that served of kitchen were empty. The only bottle he found barely had enough left in it to wet his lips. A smirk appeared on McCain's face. He could summon powerful elementals and  shape mana into spells, and yet could get his grocery on time.
He put his coat on, and flipped his hat on his head, ready to brave Seattle's winter for some downtime at a bar, when his link alerted him of an incoming message. Smiley. A possible Job. Couldn't be better timing. He sent a quick reply to acknowledge the call.
He tied up his tie, tucked his shirt in and polished his shoes. He removed the machine gun from the concealed holster inside his coat. Bringing a weapon to a club would call for trouble. He was about to leave when he remembered his car was gone, burnt in the explosion that took the rest of his former team... He called for a taxi...

At the Infinity.
He was early but already a line was forming. With no intention to get wet, he walked passed he crowd directly toward the Bouncers. A massive Troll stopped him. He could have tried bribing him if he had any money to spare but that hadn;t been the case for quite some time now. So he relied on what he was good at. He concentrated on the Toll's eye and with low powered spell, to remain discreet, inserted a suggestion in his brain: It's fine, I am VIP and should step in now.
Once (and If) inside, he made his way to the bar, trying to ignore as much as possible the influx of AROs and the loud music hurting his ear. He finally got the drink had been waiting for for what seemed hours now. He savored it, as much as the watered down synthalcohol could be savored. He set his earbuds' sound filter to focus on the elf bartender and simply waited. Other will come and he'll have a better idea of whom he'll be working with.

Note regarding weapons/armor: Armored clothing is quite common in 2070, but Infinity does have a gun check policy in place. Before you can enter, you are taken through a MAD scanner and wanded as well. Weapons are electronically tagged and held in a secure, individual safe keyed to your SIN (or fake SIN). Weapons are stored unloaded, of course.

Infinity is an experience that is hard to put into words. Once you step inside, the sense of space and distance seems to change...dark glass and mirrors create a feeling of  near-infinite space, and cutting-edge holographic systems project images that seem all too real, until you reach out to touch them. It is a challenge to get a good read on the room with so many distractions, but you are all professionals, and find your way to the bar, and each other.

The bartender doesn't give her name, but gladly points you towards the meeting place, one of Infinity's private back rooms that are officially for "private parties". When you arrive at the meeting room, you are greeted by a troll of medium height, looking to be in his late 30's. He's ruggedly handsome, if you're into that sort of thing, and dressed in a purple and chartreuse suit in the current style.

"Welcome," he says, smiling. "Please sit down. My name is Johnson, and I believe that we all have a mutual acquaintance named Smiley. Can I get you a drink?"

After getting Silvia's message Ryan swung by the MegaThrift and scored a black suit edged in red Synth-Satin and a used devil mask for cheap. "She said dress like I'm going to a party... why not a masqurade?" Ryan had learned that sometimes it pays to be a little overly cautious when you had a criminal SIN. The mask would distract and hide his face from any security cameras and besides he could always take it off.

-------------------Club Infinity

At 5 till Ryan walked straight past the excited throngs waiting to enter to the two troll bouncers at the door. "I'm here for a private party my name should be on the list, under Patches." If the Johnson or Smiley hadn't put his name on the list, well then they were the nonprofessionals not him. He had decided against carrying any weapons so he didn't have to check anything at the door but he did have some tranq patches in his pocket.
After making past the door he spotted the bartender Smiley had told him about. He caught her attention and  politely asked where the Johnson party was meeting while turning on the recording unit built into his cyber eyes. As he walked to the private room the elf had indicated he was reminded how much he hated clubs by the thumping music and holographs, but he did his best to ignore them.

HITCH

Hitch smiles sincerely. "Mr. Johnson, thank you, no, this'll do," he says, clinking the ice in his glass as he shakes it mildly.

He sits down smoothly, almost relaxed and waits expectantly for Mr. Johnson to start the pitch.

Marcus is finding his day a total bust, he’d had his little gunsmith shop open for eight hours and only two bites. One a stupid street punk wanting something from the new age lightweight ceramic compost gun, not something he did business in. The second was an old timer looking to sell his stuff, it pained Tex’s heart to see someone looking to sell but he didn’t have any available cash to buy. It was after the old timer leaving when Tex got the call, his old RenRaku comlink chirped twice, before Tex answered it. “Smiley, you got some work? Good the sixes have been yelling to be let out again. I’ll close up shot and head out soon”
It takes twenty minutes to close up shop, and lock the front door. Then he heading into his modest apartment behind the shop front, so shower and get his outfit on, dressed like the cowboy he’d always dress as on runs. It was only then that Marcus opened his gun safe in the back taking out the arsenal, he’d lost his good gear months ago when he sold them to buy his little shop. Now he’d armed himself with some decent backups, two Ruger SuperHawks customized with smartlinks and compensators they were in leather quick draw holsters complete with western design tooled into the leather. It took another thrity minutes to get all his gear settled some more guns a silenced automatic that’s his backup  and a composite extendable baton before getting on his steel horse and heading downtown toward infinity.

@Infinity:

Tex arrives at infinity on his steel horse, an old beat up Harley Scorpion chopper, pulling to the clubs marking lot and parking right next to Hitch’s bike. Reaching into a transport box on the Harley rear seat Tex takes out his wide brimmed hat and steps off his bike locking it up. Tex walks past the waiting line having been to Infinity several times, knowing the bouncer Jake from his LoneStar days. They square off for several moments before Tex laughs, “Don’t I’m not here with the Star this time” Passing a nice 50 nuyen tip and Tex walks past. Its inside the entryway that he’s stopped by security again, a new guy takes out a metal detector wand to sweep in for weapons. Tex just raises and eye brow, his guns are in obvious holsters, really? He checks his guns, all three of them and takes his ticket.
Inside infinity Tex sighs, he hates clubs like this loud and flashy, walking to the bar he glances at the bartender. “I’m here to see a Mister Johnson, also can I get a club soda?”

@The sit down meeting:

Tex takes a seat and says nothing until he takes out a small grey box with a brand name on it, its a white noise generator to Jam anyone bugging the conversion.

“Thank you for the offer but no I already have a drink, I guess this is where we get down to shop talk.”

(Note: Maverick would have freely given up his gun, unloaded, at the door. He has a fake license for it, which he will produce if asked.)

Once he received confirmation from the elf barmaid, Maverick made his way toward the indicated, highlighting it on the map overlaid on his vision, taking his newly acquired beer and umbrella with him. Upon reaching the designated place, he removes his damp duster and drapes it over a chair before sitting down. Raising his bottle in a salute to the Johnson, he politely accepts his offer. "Thanks chummer, this is a beer only in name; vodka'd be nice".

Maverick also greets the others either already present or filing in behind him, frowning slightly as Tex earnestly places the white noise generator on the table; while privacy measures were expected, cutting to business with hardly a word with the prospective employer might come off as brusque. "Yes Mr. Johnson, Smiley said you might require some help with a... business venture of yours."

-- Before the Meeting --

It wasn't long before everyone had spot each others. The first one he had noticed wasn't necessary the most obvious like the Orks nor the prettiest like the girl in the black dress. It was because they were in the same line of work and his aura was shinning with Magic. McClane took his glass of synthetic whiskey, sent the man a request to subscribe to his PAN and approached him by the bar. His name was Maverick if he remembered correctly and they had in the past to steal each other's job a couple times. McClane had no hard feelings, it was all business, and though their methods were pretty different, he respected the man's skills. Plus, he was Awaken too. Whether the respect was reciprocal McClane didn't know nor cared that much. He probably never cared enough for what people think of him, not helping his bad reputation.
Seems like we're not gonna have to step on each other toes this time. He told Maverick subvocally as he offered his hand.
The others were not as familiar, even if he remembered seeing their faces at least once. The girl, though not the hottest in the club by far, had a certain charm, and with this dress, she could be quite convincing during negotiations. He couldn't quite place the other two men. They were young and inexperience was a real danger in the street, but then again, he had seen youngsters pull out amazing feats before. And they were by far the most adequate with technology which wasn't his case.
That left the two Orks, one dress up like he belonged in an old 2D movie about far west conquest and stuffs, the other having hardly a piece of meat left on his cyborg body. The first one, well, McClane could live with eccentricity or at least tolerate it; the other one -the Chinese Ork- however was gonna be a tough one to handle. McClane never liked nor trusted those who gave up humanity for the betterment of machines. The only blood he could sense on him was of his victims, a killing machine. But trusted or not, he preferred to have the machine on his side rather than against him. If bullets would fly, the Chinese Ork would be the one to hide behind.
It was an eclectic group for sure, and it made McClane wonder what sort of job they were gonna be asked to perform that required this diversity of people. He swallowed the rest of his whiskey in one shot, and add to Maverick: Let see what our Johnson need us for. After You. He let Lynx pass in front, gallantry oblige,  and followed suit into the meeting room.

-- The Meeting Room --
I'll stay with real whiskey answered McClane to the Troll's offer, hoping to get a nice real whiskey on the house, or at least on the Troll's bill. Taking a seat on the side, he switched his perception to Astral and scanned the room and Troll.

Tian Lu left for the private room the Johnson had booked, but not before slinging a crude AR follow-up message to the elf behind the bar.

"Make mine a G3 tequila."
He might as well enjoy it, til the troll got to the point. He wasn't going to trust any first impressions, either, but he hadn't picked up anything from the motley group other than the usual wariness of meeting people you barely knew for illegal business over drinks.

Mr. Johnson turns to a small wetbar concealed in the wall and begins pouring drinks: a whiskey, a scotch, a shot of tequila, and a glass of vodka, all poured neat. He places the glasses on the table, considers for a moment, then pours another scotch for himself. Taking his seat at the head of a conference table in the center of the room, he leans back in his chair and takes a sip. There are seats for everyone at the table.

"Lets get down to business. Someone has stolen an object from the people that I represent. We would like for the object to be retrieved quickly, as we have reason to believe that the thief is trying to sell it. What you're looking for, if you take this job, is some music-related data that's important to my employer's business. I don't know who stole it - there was a break-in a couple of days ago, and the disk was taken along with some other items that are of little interest. Your best bet is probably to check in with any connections that you might have who would hear about the item. If the thief is trying to sell the item, word should get out about its availability.

The object storing the data is an old-style optical disk. We want both the disk and the data returned, in the eventuality that the one no longer resides on the other. Let me be clear: we do not want any of the disk's data getting into the hands of anyone but us, period. If the data gets out, we expect you to track down and eliminate any copies.

Once you have located the data, the second part of the job is to track down the person who is trying to sell it - probably not the same person who is offering the information, since the thief will likely work through intermediaries - and get the disk back. I don't care how you do it: if you can get the data back by making an offer to the thief, my employers are willing to cover the arrangement and take care of retrieving their money later. If you'd prefer to take...other measures, that is entirely up to you. Just do it quickly and make sure that the disk and the data are not harmed, and that no copies remain.

I am authorized to offer your team 10,000 nuyen for the job, with half up front and half upon return of the disk. Discuss among yourselves, and tell me of your decision before you leave this room."

Patches looked down into his drink swirling the ice in the glass. “See this just brings up a laundry list of questions for me.” He looked up at each of the other runners in turn trying to sense the mood of the room before locking eyes with the Johnson. “Before I can think about accepting your terms, and I'm not speaking for anyone else but, I’d like some basic information. For example what details about our employer, the data, and the thief are you at liberty to provide?”

Let me know what I should roll for "mood sensing". ;)

So, McClane thought to himself, an optical disk containing Music-relaled data is stolen, within two days an intermediary of the thief would put the word on the streets that the data is available for sale. Find the source, find the thief, find the disk. He tried to summarize. He looked around and now the team made a bit more sense, more or less. The kid, what's his name -Hitch, Data expert, Hacker as they were known today. Himself and Maverick, investigators, right on the job. Not much Magic going around but it was usually for the best. The Orks, if investigation get nasty or " whatever mean necessary" actually becomes necessary... That leave Lynx and Patches... Extraction, get in get out... and well yes, Lynx had some undeniable charms. Yes he could see why Smiley had gathered such a Team. Maybe with chance he'd become a permanent  one, if they all get along and things went on smoothly.

10,000¥  was a good sum for this kind of Job, though divide it by 7 and there was not even enough for a month's rent. Still it wasn't too bad for what should be a few days of work. They had to prove themselves and hopefully, either through Smiley or that Johnson, get more work... build a reputation.

McClane started thinking of whom might have heard about the Data being sold. He thought of a few names but those people would probably rather be on a cruise to Hell before talking to him. That pretty much left him with either Papa Loubda, a crafty Talismonger in Auburn or Esteban, his 'downtime' goodies provider... read it drugs. Not much experts in the music industry...

He listen carefully to Patches question, knowing there was little chance of much more information. But a good investigation was all about the little details. He simply nodded to his new Teammates to indicate he was ok with taking on the job, and kept listening on the others questions and most importantly the possible answers.

Lynx put her glass down on the table and sat back in her chair to consider the troll's words.  She hadn't really known what to expect, having heard all sorts of tall stories from the various runners she'd sold to in the past, but this job sounded like it should be interesting.  In a way it would be similar to her previous work - just with much more of an active role in the acquistion of the item to be delivered.  "That's a lot less money than I was hoping for, but it sounds like the job should be over pretty quickly, one way or the other.  There may also be soom room for bargaining...", she thought, but she was distracted from further consideration of this idea by the question from the brown haired man sitting opposite.

The question was a good one and she found herself nodding in agreement.  The details provided weren't much to go on, and she had no idea where to start.  "No point haggling over the amount if we can't actually do the job", she thought to herself and turned to address Mr Johnson.  "I'm afraid I agree," she said, "I appreciate your client's need for discretion in this matter, but any additional information you are able to provide will assist us in retrieving your clients' property much more quickly and with a minimum of trouble.  We all want the same thing here after all."

Johnson listens intently to Patches and Lynx, his mouth tightening almost imperceptibly.

"My employer is paying me to keep them anonymous, so I cannot help you there, and their need for privacy precludes any investigation of the scene of the crime. Even if they could be convinced, they have no additional information regarding the thief. As I said, you will need to put feelers out for someone who is trying to sell music-related data in a hurry.

I can tell you little more about the disk - I've been told that it is an old-style optical disk, no longer in use. I'm not sure of the format."

The damp investigator listened quietly to everyone, taking mental notes of the job they were asked to do. Like his fellow Awakened McClaine, he could put the pieces together, but the team was too big. A simple investigation and retrieval should require a lot less than seven people, this was akin to hunting demon rats with a Panther assault cannon. Whatever was on that disk must have been novahot, and the owner wanted to make sure they kept the exclusivity.

During a lull after the Johnson's answer, Maverick adds his own question, a simple one: "Given that we'll have to make sure we have the right data, can we at least know who recorded that disk? If the thief is clever, he might be using red herrings."

"Hmm, this guy is serious about his privacy.  Not going to help him much when his precious data ends up all over the matrix because he didn't give us enough to find the thief." Lynx thought to herself, somewhat annoyed by the Johnson's answer even thought she knew it wasn't his fault.

"I am sorry, but that does present us with something of a problem.  Given the scarce information available, I don't see how any of us can commit to do such a job on the limited budget suggested.", she said looking around the room at the expressions of the other invitees to make sure they agreed.   "As has just been suggested, if this theft was a professional, targeted job - which sounds likely from the description you have provided and the sensitivity of the item stolen - he has likely invested significant resources in hiding himself and the data.  There are ways around such things, but that takes both time and money.  As a starting point for negotiation, I suggest 2000 per person plus expenses incurred?"

Hitch leans back and maintains a smiling face as the others ask questions and negotiate. He adds, "You have to agree, Mr. Johnson, that this is a time-sensitive manner and our contacts are not sharing info out of the goodness of their hearts. If you can cover our expenses and our, well, bribes we'd be able to get this done even sooner."

jonathanc would you mind rolling for me if it's possible? None of the rolling sites are working right for me. I'd like to do some teamwork negotiating, if applicable.

McClane was already thinking about the possible course of action to find that disk. His Modo Operandi was to rely heavily on the services of elementals and watchers he could summon, but by being denied access to the place of the the crime, it limited his chance to find clues and track the thief. His and their; he was part of a team now.

They had indeed to take the investigation the other way around. Hit the street, find the potential buyers, then the seller, then the prize and back the the thief. He knew of a few people knowledgeable enough in the world of music, but they'd probably rather ride a dragon to hell and back before even considering talking to McClane. He had his way with people... not in the good way.
That was leaving him with very few possibility. Nowadays, the only two people brave enough to do business with McClane were Papa Loubda, a talismonger with a small shop in Auburn, or Esteban, his usual drug provider and other gang related info. If the two would be amateur of music - certainly different - he didn't know how much they would possibly know about the industry itself. It was worth a shot contacting them though.

He kept observing the Johnson and his other teammate, occasionally switching to Astral Perception for a better understanding of their emotions.

Mr. Johnson leaned back, shrugging his shoulders with practiced ease. "I'm sorry to have wasted your time. I understand your difficulties, but unfortunately my hands are tied here. Perhaps your team is a bit...overqualified for this job? Can you recommend a group of lesser professionals who might be more amenable to these terms?

Patches leaned back enjoying the free drink as he watched the other runners trying to haggle more money out of the Johnson. Then it hit him and a smile slid across his face. He recognized who the Johnson was.
"Mr. St. George such an important troll as yourself, skilled in recognizing talent, can see we are just the team you need. It would be such a boon to work with a professional of your caliber."
Title: Re: Limited Engagement: On The Run
Post by: obidancer on <12-14-12/0216:35>
For a second McClane thought Patches had lost it, but quickly understood he somehow had recognized the Johnson or they knew each others from previous jobs.
And McClane just wanted to slap the man hard on the head. Never unveil a Johnson's identity in front of everyone. If he wanted his name secret that was for a reason. And McClane wasn't sure calling a Troll an 'Ork' was very flattering for Trolls.
He so hoped neither Lynx nor Patches would screw their chance to get the job, he was broke -or would be in a few days- and needed that money. Losing the job for wanting a few more Nuyens wasn't gonna go well in his book, and even less upsetting/insulting the Johnson.

Several thoughts went through his mind, one included using one of the Ork to slap Patches' head -he wasn't known as 'the Puppeteer' for no reason after all- but he decided not to intervene. They had to remain somehow professional. Hopefully that St. George man was more focus on Patches' last part of the sentence, agreeing to the Job. He held his breath and hoped for the best.

The troll's eyes shifted over to Patches slowly, studying him in silence for a few awkward moments. Then he smiled.

"You're quite well informed. I assume you are also discreet enough to forget that name once you've left this room. The job is your's if you want it, but I can't offer you any additional cash."

Darius St. George reached into his jacket pocket and removed a small, unmarked cylinder. A credstick. He laid it down on the table.

"This is half of your wages, paid up front. If you take this money and leave the room, I will continue our business here complete, and expect to hear news of your success in a few days."

"I'm sorry sir I must have mistaken you for someone else. I'm horrible with names and faces."
Patches smiled and placed his hand over the credstick. He looked to each of the other runners for assent before picking up the credstick and nodding to St. George. Patches stood up holding the credstick out to Lynx to dissuade anyone from thinking that he wanted the responsibility of leadership. He was hoping none of the others would hold the faux pas against him, if they had even noticed it.

"Thank you, Mr. Johnson." Hitches says politely. "How should we message you when the job's done?"

He sighs inwardly. That's what I get for letting someone else do the talking.

Hitch smiles. "Also, forgive me, it may be possible to resolve this non-violently. What's the upper limit in buying the thief off?"
Title: Re: Limited Engagement: On The Run
Post by: jonathanc on <12-18-12/1344:42>
Darius St. George smiled broadly and sent a commcode to Hitch's commlink. "I can be reached at this number. I'd rather not limit your bargaining room...give me a call with the number you've arrived at and I'll do my best to clear it with my employers. It's the least I can do."
Title: Re: Limited Engagement: On The Run
Post by: obidancer on <12-18-12/2304:01>
McClane gave a look at the two Orks and a smirk appeared on his face after Hitch commented about a non-violent resolution. Judging by the Orks' demeanor and St.George comment about having his employer's money retrieved after the deal, he knew a 'non violent solution' wasn't really what their employer wanted. It was more about the group's morals and putting a leash on the cyborg.

Finally McClane spoke up: Well that being said I propose we get started on finding that disk. If word of the disk's existence is on the street already, every minute counts to get us back on track.
He opened the door and ushered everyone of his team out. He gave the Troll one last good look and added: Next time we meet will be with your disk in hand.

Lynx stood with the rest of the group while they decided where to go, running through the details of the job in her mind.

"I suppose it's time to get started.  Now who do I know who may have heard about this...." she thought.  Only a few names jumped out at her - Carson, a supplier of electronics and weapons who was her normal source for the goods she carried in, and Vega, a rival smuggler.  It sounded like this disc probably wouldn't be readable with a standard commlink - if the theft had been planned, the thief may have ordered equipment for reading it in advance.?  It was as good a lead as any,  but it probably wouldn't be good to give too much away about what was going on...

@Carson - hi Carson, I've had a client ask about getting equipment for reading an old 'optical disc' data store?  Don't suppose you've heard of such a thing, or know where I can get one? L

@Vega - hey V, had a client ask about getting an optical disk reader.  I can't get one through my normal sources - if you know where I can get one, split the fee with you? L

"No here's fine if you trust the place and want to pay for a private room. I just hate clubs."  Patches didn't really trust that the club was the safest option but he would concede to the more experienced runners. He was more concerned with what he could dig up from the matrix and his contacts.

He fired a message off to Silvia.
"Hey darlin' thanks for the advice about the club. I've got another question to ask though. Have you heard anyone talking about a old style optical disk? Might have some interesting music data on it? I'll owe you one if you can dig something up for me that helps."

Then one to his buddy from lone star.
"Hey John its Patches, I'm trying to track down some stolen goods and return them to their rightful owner. Heard anything about a old-style optical disk that might have some important music data on it being stolen recently? I'll owe you a full round of drinks if you can help me out."

PATCHES:

John calls back in about 5 minutes:

"Optical Disk? You've got to be joking....nobody's seen one of those in like 10 years. Even if someone stole it, the damn thing would be impossible to read. Try shaking down whoever you can find dealing in outdated tech....hobbyists and the like. Maybe a junkyard? Sorry I can't do more for ya, buddy."

Silvia sends a message back about 20 minutes later:

"Optical Disk? Funny you should mention it, I heard Nabo got an email from someone trying to sell off some kind of optical disk, had some kind of music from a decade ago on it. You know Nabo, right? He's the drek-hot ork rocker that used to run with the Black Fangs over in Redmond before he hit it big. He's still got connections there...they say he never forgets his friends. He's playing a show tonight - I've heard he's pretty good. Kinda full of himself though."

LYNX:

Carson's response rolls in about 15 minutes after your outgoing message:

"I haven't seen an optical disk reader in....well, ever, to be honest. But I bet you could find one down at the Cathode Glow. It's a Hacker bar...hardcore techies. The whole place is knee-deep in old parts, cyberdecks, you name it. Hell, the guy I was meeting there claimed he saw some tech from the 20th century in there, and it was still working. If anyone has an optical disk reader, it'll be those guys, but it probably won't be free."

Vega responds about a half hour later:

"Sorry L, I haven't laid hands on anything that old in quite some time. Pretty low demand, but I imagine the supply has to be even lower. Best of luck; make 'em pay if you can dig up this thing."

McClane scanned his 'link next to one of the available room and selected on the AR display to rent it for a an hour. They'd be left alone in here and most of all they could ear each other speak and not  have to have cyber ear installed. Clubs and loud music - scratch that, loud noise - wasn't much of his liking.

He sat lazily on one of the sofa and raised his feet on the table nearby and lit up another cigarette. A few of his new teammates were already on the look out. That was the time to get the feel of everyone.
Quite a few of them were on their commlink, trying to get lead already. Good. He just had to wait.

Patches dropped into a empty seat and finished his drink while he watched everybody else send and receive messages. He waited for anyone else to introduce themselves and when they didn't he shrugged and started reading one of his novels as he waited. As soon as he got the message from Sil he spoke up. "I think I've got a solid lead. I have on good word that A orc rocker called Nabo has been contacted by someone trying to off load a optical disc with some audio files a decade old. He's playing a show tonight. He used to run with the black flags over in Redmond. He's cocky and never forgets a friend. By the way we should probably introduce ourselves. I'm Patches. I am McClane, Occult Investigator and part-time magician. Some call me The Puppeteer, but for your guys it's just McClane.

He did a quick matrix search on Nabo and his concert, hoping to quickly find the address where it would be taking place. Some of them in the team could hopefully make it there on time, it was late already. Definitely someone we may need to talk to, a good lead Patches.

He scanned the room looking at the others: Any one else got something?

Well, he did get a reaction. A slanted smile drew on McClane's face. He was so good at making friends...
With a hand in front of his mouth, he checked his breath  - who knew maybe Tian Lu was right?
Happy to notice it wasn't too bad just yet, McClane continued:
That Nabo guy is as good a lead as we can get right now. I'd say at least some of us should hurry to the party. I volunteer. Patches, you got a car? Tian Lu, care to join?

McClane's search was quick and fruitful. The show was taking place in Redmond, in an area that is well within Black Flags territory. It is also sold out, but it is likely that with so many people around, there will be ample opportunities to scalp some tickets or sneak in.

Patches rolled his eyes and walked out into the noise mumbling to himself  "Great I'm working with the newest rendition of the odd couple.” Once they were out of the stifling noise of the club and in the parking lot Patches slide open the side door on his van with a thought. It was a bulldog that looked a few years old; flat black with a large sign for “Chopstixs Chinese Soy” covering the left side. Inside was a plain but clean interior and the last row of seats had been taken out and was filled by a Renraku Stormcloud and some various other equipment easily assessable from the back doors. “It's not amazing but it gets the job done.”

He waited for his two new teammates to get their weapons back and walked out. The van was nothing amazing indeed, but all they needed was to go to a concert in Redmonds, that was perfect.
He took the front passenger seat, leaving the more space in the back to the taller Ork.

Could come in handy, he figured, even if languages weren't exactly safe codes.

The question brought memories in McClane's mind. Unwanted memories. He's had experience in the Shadows for some time now considering the life expectancy of runners, but it has been mostly solo work or temporary partnering with a couple more runners. His belonging to a full team, skilled and experienced, has been few and apart, resulting in both case in the death of pretty much all his teammates. Sure, teams are usually involving harder and more dangerous jobs, but McClane was just bad luck and dangerous scenarios usually turned into catastrophic ones around him.

It has been a few years... I am usually hired for my magical expertise and analytic abilities enhanced by a cerebral booster. Not much of a gun blazing kind of guy. I can only handle my machine pistol because I'm chipped. Skillwire system. Speaking of pistols, I left my Ceska home... see pretty lousy gun man, huh?
He turned in the seat to be able to look at Tian and added:
See, Mr. Li, not so much anti-cyber as one might expect from a magician.

Back to Patches, he asked:
How 'bout you kid, you're no Rookie, right?

Arriving on the outskirts of the Redmond Barrens, you can see the venue for Nabo's show clearly now. It's a large warehouse that would be non-descript were it not for the enormous crowd of people gathered around it. The line to get in wraps around the block, and the drone of a thousand conversations is loud enough to intrude on your own conversation, even from across the street.

Scalpers are easy enough to find, as are security, who look exactly as you would expect: black t-shirts stamped with "SECURITY" worn by thickly muscled orks bearing gang tattoos.

Patches killed the engine. "Here we are. If you gentlemen wouldn't mind giving me a moment to change into something a bit more fitting for the situation." I'm gonna start to worry about what we can find in this van. Don't tell me you have a fanboy outfit hidden in that bag.
McClane looked at his surrounding trying to figure out all the possible ways to get in, relative to the security around. Sure getting their hand on Backstage tickets would be great, but he had to think about plan B.
This was no concert hall. A simple warehouse converted into a performance stage. The warehouse certainly had a back entrance, probably one leading backstage. He looked up to see if he could spot any drone flying around, and watch where the Security was stationed.

Hey, Rookie, why don't you drive around the block once, maybe we can convince someone to let us in backstage already. If all else, I also have a Press License, maybe they'd let me cover the event.

"No fancy boy outfits, so sorry to disappoint" instead Patches pulls out a black jumpsuit and a light pistol in a concealable holster. As he pulls on the change of clothes he mentally guides the van slowly around the block.

After years of seeing that happening, one thought you'd get used to it, but the mental driving thingy Riggers could do always freaked McClane out. He was more of a grab-the-wheel-and-drive kind of guy, and that was not about to change.
But apart from the brief jerk as the vehicle started moving without a physical driver,  McClane remained still and silent (yeah, that's a change :) )

Malcolm Reed was sitting at home idly going through some music blogs when he got a call from his fixer Norman Keyes, "Smith, I've gotten word of a job that might be up your alley. A friend of a friend is doing some investigation into a missing disk, seems to be related to the music business. You interested?" Reed hesitated for a moment, Smith...then that means this is shadow business. Time to jump in I suppose, you did agree to become a runner. Reed replied, "What's the pay and what other details can you give me Mr. Keyes?"

As they we're pulling around the side of the warehouse his comm went off and he listened to the message from Silvia. "Hey, uh, the contact who gave me the tip says she knows someone who's got alot of connections in the entertainment biz. I think he's a runner. She wants to know if she can give him my number. What do you think? "

As long as I keep at least the same share at the end, I can only welcome more expertise. And if what your contact said is true, experience in the music industry can definitely be a plus.
McClane gave a closer look at the back of the warehouse, keeping a mental note on the number of security people, potential groupies and gangers that just hang there for lack of better purpose in their miserable life.

"You are an angel darlin'. Yes please give the man my number." Patches backed into a empty parking space behind the warehouse in the shadows just within sight of the backdoor. He put it into park, and killed all the lights before speaking "So whats the plan old timer?" Patches smiled in good humor without taking his eyes off of the group at the back door.

Patches:
"Alright, I'll make sure he has the contact info. Sounds like you got a rough draw, with half your team dropping out before the run started. Good luck Patches. Come back in one piece." Silvia's tone was playful, almost mocking, but you could hear a tinge of real concern in her voice.

Mr. Smith:
Keyes sighed, and you could mentally picture his casual shrug. "If you want the details, you'll have to talk to the team; this isn't one of my jobs. I'm just passing this along as a friend; a bartender I know is friends with some guy who's on a job that could use a hand from someone who knows the entertainment biz. Sounds like they're coming up a little short on manpower. If you're interested, you can contact him at this number..."

Glitch:
You've made it to the edge of Redmond, where you'd heard about some kind of big rock show tonight. Nabo? You'd heard his name come up in the news from time to time...local boy done good, that kind of thing. The crowd outside of the warehouse was enormous, and you could see the sharks circling around the tourists who'd come to the slums for a good time. Grifters, scalpers, pickpockets....and who knows what else.

Everybody: Perception tests, please. Also, if you intend to hide yourselves within the crowd, please also roll Infiltration (urban specialty applies, if you have it)

Reed nodded, though the gesture meant nothing during a comm call, "Right, well thank you Mr. Keyes. Have a good evening." He disconnected the call and then send a call to the mystery number, "Good evening, my name is Mr. Smith. I've been informed that you require my familiarity with the music industry. Shall we discuss the terms of my employment?"

"Wait the other runner is calling." Patches quickly routed the comm call through the van so McClane could hear and speak as well.

Quote
"Good evening, my name is Mr. Smith. I've been informed that you require my familiarity with the music industry. Shall we discuss the terms of my employment?"

Patches mild southern accent answered "Hello Mr. Smith, someone with inside knowledge of the music industry could be quite helpful to us." He cut a glance at McClane and reached over into the glove box pulling out a piece of electronic paper. Focusing Patches spelled out -How much do we offer him?-

There's a 10000 ¥ reward on finding an optical disk, its content and its thief, to be split evenly among whoever is left standing after all that drek. Should be a straight forward job, we're on a lead at the moment, trying to get to a Nabo, the ork singer. Meet us at the warehouse where the concert is taking place, Patches here will ping you the address. I am McClane by the way, welcome to the club.
McClane thanked Patches for sharing the comm. He had been straight with the money, whoever would step in to get the job done should get his share.

well kid, you wanted the plan, here it is: according to what your girl told you, that Nabo guy received an email from someone trying to sell an optical disk. We need to find that someone, we either check with Nabo if he knows who contacted him, or get our hands on his 'link, extract the email and try track down the sender, hence my earlier question about your hacking skills. I'd see while we're here we do both. Interrogate the Ork and get the email's originator from his link. It ain't gonna happen on stage so that's why I'd like to get backstage.
While we're at it let me think if I can get a good hacker to help us...

"The terms are agreed too." Using his bathroom mirror and cybereyes, Reed took a photo himself that he sent to the two, "I've sent a photo of myself for the purposes of identification when we rendezvous, I ask for reciprocation." After hearing their reply to his request, "I will contact you once I've arrived at the venue. Mr. McClane, Mr. Patches." With that he disconnect the call and got dressed, opting for his business suit over his drab lined coat. He intended to make it clear to his new compatriots that he was not some lowly gutter scum. He placed his hold-out pistol in the integrated holster of his suit, and in his pocket he place his extendable baton. After getting in his car, he reassured himself that his heavy pistol and the spare clips were still in the glove box. After plugging the address for the concert into his car's computer and letting Grid Guide do the work for him, he began looking up details on Nabo. He'd seen the name on various blogs and read some opinion reviews before, but didn't really know anything beyond the cursory.

While McClane was trying to find them a hacker Patches snapped a photo of his partner and sent it along with the address and a stored photo of himself to Smith. Then he decided to check and see if he could find some answers on the matrix. He started out looking for more info on Nabo and possibly a layout of the inside of the warehouse. It never hurts to have more info on who your looking for and where they are. Hell while I'm at it I should check on TixList to see if anyone is trying to get rid of some backstage passes.

While sifting through the data on Nabo, Reed sent a message to one of his contacts, Miranda Cruz.

<<MMS::Miranda Cruz: [Attachements - Patches.jpg, McClane.jpg]  Good evening Ms. Cruz, I was hoping you might recognize these two gentlemen and know what their reputations are. I would consider it a great favor, if you could relay what you might know about them.>>
Title: Re: Limited Engagement: On The Run
Post by: jonathanc on <01-30-13/1353:13>
Patches:
There are no updated layouts of the warehouse available on the Matrix. It was likely just a big empty rectangle to start with, prior to being converted. Info on Nabo is easy to come by: he's originally from Redmond, he has a prior criminal record, he's rumored to be dating 3 pop starlets that you may or may not have heard of, and he's known to be pretty fond of groupies.

Mr. Smith:
Your search turns up some basic info about Nabo: he's born and bred in Redmond, affiliated with the Black Fangs gang, and known to take very good care of his friends from the old neighborhood. He's also extremely popular at the moment, and the show that you are heading to is sold out.

It takes some time before Miranda responds with anything on the photos. "Couple of Shadowrunners, I think. Faces match up to a couple of names, probably aliases. My guess would be that they're still building their reps, because nobody's after them yet."

McClane:
Across the street, you see a slender man observing the crowd (including you). His gaze doesn't linger on you, but it definitely looks like he's taking the measure of the crowd. He has one hand on a commlink, and it seems likely that he's doing something on the Matrix. You've heard that hackers sometimes troll big crowds like this looking for easy marks.

Glitch:
Being a bit closer to the entrance than the others, you can see the doormen flirting with a trio of curvy ork girls, who are probably trying to con their way back stage. Viewing the scene in AR, you can see that the scalpers are selling tickets for 500 nuyen a pop.

<<SMS::Miranda Cruz: Thank you for your assistance. Have a pleasant evening, Ms. Cruz.>>

Reed finally arrived at the venue, parked his car and hoped it didn't get stolen. He made his way towards the warehouse as he called up Patches.

<<Commcall:: Patches: Mr. Patches, I've arrived at the venue. Where are you and Mr. McClane located?>>

Even as he asked this, he scanned the area for the two.

All right little buddy, I got a favor to ask. Mind checking out the guys over there, the ones selling the way overpriced tickets? I need to know if there's a way we can get me a ticket without the huge fee. Just try not to get caught, ok? He knew the sprite would obey to the best of it's abilities even if he demanded it, but he figured being nice to something smarter than a lot of the people he met was just a smart thing to do. Especially considering how little he knew about where they came from, or went back to. Maybe they all talked with each other about the people they served. The thought always made him wonder; and he knew the importance of a good rep in this world.

What do you mean they left?
Said McClane as he seemed to have received a call.
-Just like that? How can they just leave on a run?
-I understand Johnson will get pissed off.... Yeah yeah, and your reputations gonna suffer, I hear you, Smiley.
-Look, Patches and I are still on it. I tell you what, I'll take care of getting a team together; we're gonna get that disk, Johnson will be happy and your reputation ok.
-Yeah sure I can manage to get a team together, I know people... Sort of... Just remember what I'm doing for you here.

The call ended and McClane informed Patches about the others in the team just deciding the run wasn't worth their time.

He thought for a second about what Patches had just told him about the groupies, then got an idea. The only ork runner he knew was this female name Nemesis. She wasn't attractive to his standards, but again, he didn't know what ork males were into these days.
He sent her a short message. "if you can make it to Nabo's concert in 20min, I got a job for you. Getting a team together. McClane."

He got out the van, Mr Smith was coming. He just shook his hand, barely looking at him, his sight fixed on someone else in the crowd. McClane so had his way with people....  Hold your thoughts for a second He said to Smith as he walked toward his target. A young man who just lit up a cigarette. (Glitch)
Got light, kid? How 'bout a job and a future?

"Yes, yes it is. Unfortunately after taking the job most of the other runners decided it wasn't worth their time. Me and McClane had already left to follow up this lead so instead of giving up we decided to put a team togeather ourselves. " He took a long drag and exhaled through his nose before continuing. "What we're looking for some music-related data on a old-style optical disk. We are also responsible for tracking down and eliminating any other copies. Our employer doesn't care how we get the disc back but if we can broker a deal with the thief they will cover the cost. They want it done fast without damage to the original disc." He paused and looked over at McClane talking to the other stranger before continuing "As for compensation their offering 10,000 nuyen for the job, with half up front and the other half on completion."

Switching over to AR, he looked over the man addressing him. Light, I can do. he says as he tosses his lighter over. As for the rest, maybe, maybe not. Who are you, and who sent you? He shrugged "Nope we got the payment and as for the Johnson I'm fairly sure he's on the up and up. He pulled another drag off the cigarette and looked thoughtful for a moment. "I hear your an expert in the music industry. Can you tell us anything useful about Nabo? And secondly do you have any other useful skills? And before you ask McClane says he's a detective and a spell slinger. I'm a rigger and a medic. He glanced back over at McClane slightly distracted -What the hell is that old codger doing now?-

"In a previous life, I was a contract negotiator and talent manager for musical acts. As such I can handle the Johnson at the bargaining table, and on the job I can get most people to do what I want. As for Nabo; he's born and raised in Redmond, affiliated with the Black Fangs gang, and known to take care of friends from his old neighborhood. From the looks of things, security here consists of members of the Black Fangs, and that's problematic. If they were professional security, I could play the part of media executive and browbeat them into letting us in. With these men though...I'm not confident about that approach. Have either of you formulated a plan for gaining access?"

McClane caught the lighter and lit up another cigarette. After taking a puff, he continued.
Divine intervention brought me. I need a good decker, or what is it you kids call themselves these day? Oh yeah Hacker. I need a good hacker to access a link, find an email and trace the message back to its originator. Upon retrieving the 'object' the mail is about, you can get up to 1000 nuyens. And if you're good at what you do I may consider keeping you for a more permanent job.

We both know what you're here for and that ain't for the music. I'm giving you the chance to make a name for yourself, and make money doing so. If you can make a decision within two minutes that is. Sorry for the rush.

No matter how brightly coloured, how striking, or how well (Or poorly for that matter) he fit in, when there was a crowd that had to be somewhere, Gary was invisible.
Hovering at the edge of the crowd, fiddling about on his skates, Gary typed away at no less than 5 neon tinted AR displays, various info pips surrounded the lambent windows, slowly circling like the teeth of an ancient clock's gears. Gary flicked about the motion based commands on one of AR windows, launching a sniffer program to intercept traffic, looking for hidden nodes trying to probe the warehouse the crowd so eagerly tried to get into. While he waited on the sniffer Gary opened up the minimized VOIP window to Paroquet, his long time friend of many years whom he had never met in person.

"I can't believe I took this 'gig', I mean, sure I'm crushing matrix space, snipping links- whatever. But seriously? I'm a Security analyst, napping signals and fuzzy matrix traffic is a joke, I mean, what kind of band hires someone to stop free publicity? Don't they know that people selling trids of their shows brings up their awareness? Hell I might sneak a free peek and sell it latter, that is of course of Nabo isn't so bad that I'll have to restrain myself from hacking his sound sys' and blasting some 'Totally Awesome Jackal Love Symphony' or something else as obnoxiously catchy."

While Gary lamented his job over the mental conversation he launched forth a virtual webwork of AR windows. Thick caloused paws skittering over the AR widgets, pulling dials widgets, running gesture based commands and typing away at his keyboards. To anyone else he was just another social network junkey blathering away on his blogs about how he was going to see Nabo.

He looked at McClane, "This does seem like a peculiar means of metahuman resource acquisition, but I suppose everything about this assignment has been peculiar." He nodded to Glitch and extended his hand, "In any event, good evening, Mr. Glitch. You may call me Mr. Smith."

I hear ya, Patches. It seems unusual but trust me on this one. I've seen him before hanging with some gang I know - well one of its members at least - and it is no coincidence I just noticed him again in the crowd. These kids are geniuses with computer and electronics, I have a gut feeling we need to give him his chance to experience the shadows. And if Hitch was good enough I'm sure Glitch will too.

I tell you what, I'll vouch for him if he messes up, ok? Plus, I'm bringing back up in his field just in case. By the way Glitch, the Doc is right, you may get shot, that's part of the business. Consider yourself warned. Welcome to the Shadows.

McClane was talking with his usual nonchalance, but he knew he was taking a risk this Glitch. There was something about him though, he couldn't pinpoint. Maybe the Dark King was stirring them in a specific direction. Risk and danger weren't something McClane was afraid of anymore. Not since 'He' became his mentor.

See Patches, we got bad luck with the initial team, but it looks like the cards are turning. Nemesis was an imposing Ork lady for sure. He barely knew her, but reckoned he should not get on her bad side. He couldn't tell how sexy Orks would fine her, but she was much too big for his taste. She may just be the muscle they needed though. More intriguing though was how fast she showed up and the shirt she was wearing with the big 'Security' on it.

We all like money. He'll get the same share as anyone once the mission is accomplished. He said about her buddy. Now tell me one thing. What the drek are you doing at this concert with this shirt on. You are aware what we're about to do is pretty much opposite to what you're supposed to do wearing this, right?

He had barely time to pause that a 'skinny' Troll with Orange hair and neon horns. He was about the same size as the elf Mr.Smith, and the Ork Nemesis. Not too impressive for a Troll.
He turned toward Patches with a sorry expression on his face. He wasn't expecting that to show up. He trusted that Nemesis had called for someone with skills. But appearance did matter sometimes! Exchanging looks with Patches, he just shrugged his shoulder. I guess I got myself a team, finally.

Of course I'm getting paid to be s'curity here, and as ya said you aint here to help out wit that, So whats in it for me and is it gonna get me shot at?"  She was hoping that McClains little plan was going to let her still get paid by her employers too.

Gary peered over the purple and white map node, the AR data overlaid on his mapsoft showing the mass of pulsing blips, each one a comlink. Several "Hidden" links showed up as well, standing out as dark grey blips without a radiating pulse. Gary's paws pantomimed resting on a pair of AR windows as he examined each dot, meticulously peering over each one, using DNI to expand info tooltips on each blip. After a long moment of examining the map he touched each blip flagging them in AR for security to pay special attention to. Just as Gary was about to start eavesdropping on the hidden nodes an electric orange AR bubble appeared, a private text message from one of the security guards.

<<Hey Freekie, a buddy of mine is requested someone of your specific specialty. We're at:  [Attachements - Gridlink ID# 556712349751], near the Nabo concert tonight. Let us known if you're interested in talking about the money. No details as of yet, but it could be fun and profitable.>>

Gary's ears folded back at the mention of "Profitable", nothing says, "This will hurt you." like "Could be Profitable." Even so, his work for the time being was mostly done for the next 5 minutes, and he could resume work at a distance anyway. Gary thought about why he even felt the urge to listen, maybe it was Nabo or maybe it was the fact that he was providing yet another advantage to this lowlife gang. Though the thought of the crowd paying out the nose for a mediocre and overpriced show almost made Gary happy, the thought of them actually enjoying themselves and making Nabo that much more wealthy dashed that.

Gary closed his AR windows and took off on his skates, luckily he had told security he'd be moving around allot, so the wouldn't think much of him taking off down the block. Despite how comfy the skates usually were on his paws, and how big the two wheels were, the rough roads were murder on his form. I don't know why I thought it'd be a good idea to stand around in skates for hours.

Just a few moments latter Gary came to a powerslide halt just a few meters from the the gridlinked ID local. Gary shot a text message back at Erica, an Ork woman who seemed to have a knack for getting Gary in trouble.
<<No no, it's not like I was working or anything.... These guys friends of yours Erica? Nevermind, look I'm getting paid 1'200 Nu' a night to keep this place tight and on the level, and they said they won't shoot me, so I mean, good HR right there. And please, before you start, tell me this isn't the rival gang here to shoot up Nabo and they want me to let them in or else.>>

Nemesis sent a message back <<I'm here on physical security, but a little extra cash on the side couldn't hurt, worst case scenario, if these guys are trying to take out Nabo then we may get a reward for turning 'em in. Might even get a vite to go on tour. But I don't think McClain is much for assassinations, a little too violent and public for his tastes. Sides this may be a double payday..>>

She reached back and scratched her spine, her pinky barely pressing against the handle of her Predator in its holster, then she leaned against the vehicle.

Glitch was a little taken aback by McClain willing to vouch for him. Trust was not something that was usually just handed out. He might have to stick by the old man. Though he did chuckle at the "Matrix wizard" commment; close enough to the truth. If I'm the one getting shot at, someone has really fragged things all to hell. But yeah, I get that getting shot at is part of running.

Patches took a deep breath and turned around "Yeah McClane your a regular fixer." He glanced around at the gathered group before continuing. "The job pays 10,000 to recover an old optical disc holding some music data. We got a tip that someone had tried to sell Nabo one just like it recently. We need to confirm this and get as much info on the seller as possible to track them down. So I guess the question is; are you in?" Patches lit another smoke as the last question sunk in "Ok everybody is still here so any questions comments suggestions? I mean it might be helpful if we knew everybody's specialties first."

"What is this the CAS?"
Gary covered his face and put out his hand giving the "Put that away" pantomime.
"Look, I've got my digits in every 'link within in a kilometer of here, and security- Gary pointed this thumb towards Nemesis. Wants me to keep an eye on everyone going into the warehouse, they didn't exactly specify how though. And uh... maybe I might know how to edit you guys out of the camera's picture... But I warn you, you guys burn me on this and you'll have allot more than just than Nabo's goon squad to worry about".
Gary looked over each of the runners around the van, putting a personal note on each one in his AR HUD. He then switched over to his DNI conversation with Paroquet.
Say, Paroquet, what do you know about these guys?

Ease off, sunshine. Threatening your teammates ain't gonna give you cookiee points. McClane said to Freakazoid, reusing how Patches nicknamed him, lacking proper introduction.
So far Glitch and Mr. Smith had won his confidence as far as professionalism and willigness to be on the team. As for Patches, Rookie a few minutes ago, it felt  like they were the two veterans now that  they were the ones recruiting. He quickly promoted but McClane was happy to see the man was doing a good job so far and had hos heart in it. It was time to make his point now.
This is a team of runners. What we do is illegal, what we do is dangerous. The shadows are a ruthless, but that' s where we strive. I don't care how you want to call yourself - you can be a expert, a guru, a ninja, a doc - for me you are all runners and part of my team. I'll see to have the mission completed and hopefully that no one get hurt badly doing it, but drek happens, believe me. I don't care who can piss higher than the other.  So let all put our ego aside. You don't have to be on this job, but if you do I'm expecting you give 100% of your skills to it.

His eyes hovered over each of his new teammates, and he continued:
Now, if you will, let's get things going. Patches explained already the purpose of the run. What we want now is to get inside the concert warehouse, find and get Nabo's commlink and have our hackers extract the the email he received and trace the sender. Nemesis and Sunshine, if you're with the security team I assume you can get us in. Or at least get us to talk to the security guards for the backstage entrance. That'll help us skip the crowd. I have a Journalist License, maybe Mr.Smith you can convince the guards to let us in for doing a documentary on the crowd. If you find any other reason to get us in be my guest. Once he start singing, his commlink will either be on him or in his lodge or whatever is used for him to get ready. Any questions?

Freak, can you get these guys on the media guest list? We can always try to sneak them in, or I can try lifting a media badge, but getting on the guest list would make life easier for us all. I'm set to guard backstage during the show, make sure people like you don't steal anything.

Glitch can probably pull off a media member pretty convincingly if he has a small drone with a camera. Of course I'm always open to other suggestions as well.

"Ms. Erica, and Mr. Jeff," he stated as if to commit the names to memory, "Good to be working with the both of you. Let us hope this venture is as profitable as claimed." He extended his hand to each in turn. After which he turned to McClane and Glitch, "As towards our getting backstage, I believe the story of us being a documentary crew is a workable one. I can play the part of producer, Mr. McClane the journalist, and Mr. Glitch, as Ms. Erica suggested, can be the cameraman. A subtle look at Glitch to see if it was ok, McClane reluctantly handed over his 'link to the small troll.
- Is it necessary? How about we just subscribe to each other's PAN and you encrypt the whole exchange from your end? Nevermind, just work your magic.

He probably would have his commlink checked to be sure at a later time, but for now he had to do his best to show and build trust within his team.

Not sure how fast Freakazoid would be, McClane switched his perception to Astral to inspect his surrounding (looking for Spirits and/or active magicians) and spend a few seconds on each of his comrades (assensing each one)

He nods to McClane, giving his assent as he hands his own link over. Not like I actually need the damn thing. Chalk one up for me I guess.
Thanks for the offer. No such thing as too careful. Good thinking ahead. As far as the drone, I don't have any. If we can acquire one, I can handle it easy enough. I wasn't exactly looking for this kinda work tonight, so I'm not as well prepared as I'd like. Do we have anything we could spoof up to look like a camera drone? I doubt anyone is gonna be paying a whole lot of attention to anything other than the show or the drinks. But I could be wrong.

"Don't worry I don't even have to touch your PAN, you can manually reset your Access ID, I'll show you how, it shouldn't take more than a couple seconds each. Not like you got anything to hide anyway Nemi..."
Gary set to work putting the three links he wasn't holding into his chest jacket pocket, locking his wheels via DNI Command to make sure he didn't slip, he held the commlink out at half an arms length to show them each the plastic cover at the back of their commlink and the simple button combination inside the panel to reset their Access ID.
"I'll load an IC onto each of your links to keep an eye out for intrusion, if your firewall or the IC trips an alert on your link, you pull it out and reset your Access ID, that'll force them to reset their hack and find you all over again. I'm gonna give you each a D'Chip loaded with a burn program, anyone gets into the node without disarming it will erase the chip. You keep your sensitive stuff that cannot fall out of your hands on this."
After Gary had finished showing each of the other Runner's how to reset their comcodes Gary summoned up an AR interface to run his encryption program, a purple AR window he "Attached" to each link indicating to its PAN its encrypted status. Gary doled out their commlinks in return with the chips he had showed them slotted in each.

Complex action on each commlink, Logic+Hardware (2)

Fourth Link
8d6.hits(5)=4 (http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/3907583/) (Brilliant success!)

I then load a data bomb Rating 3 onto 6 data chips, a couple complex actions each.

(Made a bunch of rolls to encrypt, then realized that you just encrypt as a simple action.)
I encrypt the group's commlinks, encryption rating 6, the threshold to decrypt is encryption rating (X2) complex action.
I spend the next complex actions to load one copy of my IC (Rating 4) onto each of their links and the Analyze Program. Rating 4.
Simple action tell it to "Run Analyze, search for any Icons on the node. If Icon is found check it's Access ID against my Whitelisted Database. If the Access ID is not in the Whitelist trigger Alert."

McClane grabbed his commlink back and briefly inspected it. There's no way whatever the Troll added to it was gonna run as smooth as on the hacker's but it will be plenty enough for the run.
He received Glitch's message and pinged him back a quick "Thank You. Much appreciated"

Well, if you're done with your tinkering and we can all communicate simultaneously and quietly, then I say we should get going.

The crowd, which had been mostly milling about outside, has begun to pour into the warehouse. It's pretty obvious that the concert wasn't just sold out; it was overbooked. There is a pretty intense press of metahumanity surging towards the entrance. The doormen are starting to get a bit restless. This could get ugly, fast.

Nemesis checked the time, I'm on the clock, and right now I'm not being missed but the closer to the show starting, the more likely I'll be missed. she took the commlink back, not understanding much of what Gary had said, and gave him a nod of thanks.

So whats the plan, and where do ya need me when? I'm backstage during the show so as long as I'm not too inconspicuous I shouldn't stick out like a sore thumb. And if any of ya get caught I'll try to be da one to escort you off premises. Gary initiated a DNI matrix conversation with the group, somewhat reassured of its security now. His electronic voice, cool and clear sounded over the group's VOMP.
You of all people know that I have to load the IC onto your node, it wont copy over on the chips. I'm sure you've got it covered though, we're on an encrypted channel so communication is green. Okay, remember, this channel is encrypted, to keep it that way avoid any unnecessary matrix traffic, and keep the chat just between us.

Unless we were planning on scoping out the next big Combat Biking rally I don't think they'll buy that that drone is our camera drone. If they ask, it'd just be in our interest to convince them we've got cybereyes or integrated cameras in our glasses, as some of us may already. Before you guys go in I'm going to get back to my post and try to breach the node on my own and edit you guys into the list. I'd take the van and get to the other side of the block behind the warehouse.
Glitch if you're comfortable with it, try probing the security camera's firewalls if they're not wired, try capturing their matrix traffic with your sniffer and see if it leads into a central node, I'll do the same from the front.
Gary began to return to his post to "Watch over the crowd" and try and get into the warehouse node.

Reaching into the matrix, he recalled his sprite. Okay, I need another little favor. I need you to see if you can capture the data from the camera feeds from the warehouse, and send it over to me.

Using one (1) task to capture wireless signal, threshold (3).
Electronic Warfare (4) + Sniffer (4) = 8 dice pool
8d6.hits(5)=2 (http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/3913777/)
Not enough successes.
Trying again.
8d6.hits(5)=3 (http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/3913823/)

You receive the camera streams. There are cameras on each of the four sides of the warehouse outside, and a few cameras inside.

Outside Camera 1: This is trained on the main entrance, which is guarded by two orks. They are currently doing their best to contain the surging crowd.

Outside Camera 2: This is a second entrance, around the corner from the first one. It is also guarded by two orks, with similar gang tattoos the the guys at the first door.

Outside Camera 3: This is the truck entrance for the warehouse, with two large roll-up doors for unloading gear. Both doors are closed and locked up, but the trucks for Nabo's gear are still there.

Outside Camera 4: This is a side entrace. It's a single door, that appears to be closed (locked?) with nobody in front of it.

The indoor cameras show a rapidly filling warehouse. Due to the poor lighting, it's difficult to see details, but you can see the bar, an enormous dance floor, and at least one camera is trained on the backstage area. The stage is flanked by curtains that presumably lead to the rear; they are guarded, but the guards seem to be allowing certain people through (mostly women).

I'm heading back to my post backstage before things get too crazy and I'm missed. Keep me informed and I will see what I can do to help. If you get in a tough spot try to make sure its me that finds you.

She nodded to the team and walked back to the warehouse and into the back entrance, nodding to the two orks guarding the door.

Sounds good to me. And by the way, here's that camera feed, he says as he begins streaming the camera footage over the encrypted network Gary had set up. He set the different feeds up in small windows in his own AR, so he could watch them and still be able to see the rest of what was going on in front of him.

If I had an hour I could own this node.... Gary began rearranging his running and loaded programs to prepare to break the encryption and breach the firewall.

Nice Job, Kiddo said McClane to Glitch as he received the feed from the camera. With a quick swipe from his gloved hand, he put the four small ARO on the side of his peripheral vision, to be able to give it a quick look.

Patches slid the feeds into his AR peripheral with a thought while he primed the Stormcloud for lift off. As soon as he is able he slides into the backseat of the van locking the doors and setting all the van's sensors to alert him of any change in the immediate area. "As soon as my eye in the sky is at sufficient height I'll share the feed. I'm also gonna camouflage it in the most obvious fashion. It will be a flashing AR advert for the concert. I can also have it scrolling a comm code number for people to enter into a "Contest to meet Nabo" if you get me a Comm number we need hit with a lot of traffic. Could make it easier to find a comm or at least distract someone in a pinch." As he's speaking Patches is letting the Stormcloud lift off and turning on all its sensors and letting the feeds show up on his AR. Almost as an after thought he pops the chip Sunshine gave him into his data jack to look over.

Nemesis creates a part in the crowd, with McClane, Mr. Smith, and Glitch following behind her. The guards at the door nod to her and step aside...

I need a Con roll to BS your way past these guards. Nemesis gets in for free, of course. If she wants, Nemesis can make the Con roll on your behalf (I'll give a +1 die bonus to her if she does), otherwise whoever is the best fast talker (Mr. Smith, I presume?) would be your best option.

Meanwhile, Gary has broken the encryption, and Patches' drone launches without incident. It would appear that no one is taking much note of it, as there are plenty of news drones circling the area.

As soon as the blimp reached normal operating height Patches checked out the other drones.  Using the nose camera with vision magnification and the radio signal scanner he had recently installed he assessed the other air traffic. As he looked for threats and possible targets Patches overlaid the drone AR with ads for the concert. "Ok y'all I'm in the air. Here's a top down view  for ya." Patches slid the copy of the streaming vid of the belly camera onto sunshine's network. After examining the other drones he checked the roof for anything unusual.

Regarding the examination of the other drones outside, Clearsight is only used when the Drone is acting autonomously. Since you are remoting it right now, please roll your Perception skill plus the drone's Sensor rating

Moving past the guards at the door, you all catch a glimpse of the roiling sea of people listening to Nabo's performance. Moving past the guards at the curtain, you find yourselves in the backstage area. It's a narrow hallway that runs parallel to the stage. There is a single door exit here, guarded by one person. A second guard is seated in front of one of the dressing rooms (probably Nabo's?) looking rather bored.

The guard snorts angrily at Mr. Smith, his comm call forgotten for the moment. "What did you just say to me, pencil-neck? I used to snap guys like you in half just to keep in shape. You think that press pass is gonna keep you safe in here? You think I can't make you disappear on these blocks? I own these blocks! I--you know what? You aren't even worth my time. Get in there and wait for Jager" he says, waving you into the room.

The "dressing room" itself looks like an abandoned office that has been hastily converted into a star's dressing room. The desk and office chair have been pushed against one wall. In the center of the room, an ork-sized couch, a portal wardrobe, and a table covered with liquor bottles have been arranged haphazardly. And speaking of the couch, there are two scantily-clas ork girls lounging with a male ork that you don't recognize on the couch. All three appear to be intoxicated, and were, until your burst in, in the process of undressing.

Anyone entering the room may make a Perception test at this point. I would also recommend thinking of some way to explain why you've interrupted their threesome :)

Inside the room, the two ork ladies looked back at Smith with more irritation than embarrassment, frowning as they relucantly pulled their skirts back up. The male ork is now much easier to get a good look at: tattooed face, multiple piercings, bright green hair...looks like Jager had been ducking out from his usual duties.

Wiping a smear of white powder from his nose, he coughs briefly and clears his throat before speaking. "Interview? What interview? Nobody told me about an interview! Aww drek, these fraggin' suits 'r always settin' stuff up without lettin' me in on it. Who scheduled this?"

In the corner of his eye, Mr. Smith spotted a flashy, state-of-the-art Commlink sitting on the table. Judging from the lack of indicator lights, it has been switched off.
