Why do so many of the sample characters in the Shadowrun 20th Anniversary book have more than 200 points in their attributes when the book says starting characters can only spend half of their 400 points on attributes?

You know, I've heard a number of complaints about the Sample Characters, but not this one. Are you counting the metatype minimum as paid for with BP? Because, for example, Trolls don't pay for 5 Strength. They start with it automatically. And then there's the characters with raised special attributes, like Magic or Edge, which do not count against that limit, which applies only to Physical and Mental attributes..
If that's not it, you might need to be more specific; I'm not about to go checking the math on all these guys.

So the 200 point limit does not include Edge and Magic/Resonance then? that would explain a lot. Must run this by my GM :)

yes, that checks out. The Gunslinger Adept has only 180 spent on her Physical and Mental Attributes; it's the Edge and Magic that bring her up to 250. I see what I did wrong :) Gotta do more reading I guess :)

Well, if your GM decides to change that, he's going to need to compensate Awakened and Emerged something fierce.

Yea it is by the book special stats do not count torwads the 200 point limit. It whould be verry hard to make most awakend charters that way.

Not to muddy the waters, but the karma generation does have it the opposite way where the "special" attributes do count toward the half limit.
