You don't need a commlink to jump in wireless.

You need a control rig to actually jump in.
You also need to be in VR to jump in.

...and to get into VR you need DNI (and a sim-module).
You have a sim-module in the control rig already so no need for a commlink or cyberdeck for that.

It includes the SIM module, and the DNI because it's implanted, this is true. But it's missing the commlink portion. It doesn't act as a rating X commlink or anything.

So the control rig includes everything you need to get into VR (SIM and DNI), but can't connect to the matrix without an actual commlink or RCC (which does act as a commlink).

There is little reference to rigging without an RCC, unfortunately, outside of the following text when discussing matrix damage.

Quote from: p266
When you take Matrix damage, it goes to the first de-vice you’re using for your persona, not the device you’re jumped into. If you used your commlink or rigger command console to enter VR before jumping in, your commlink or RCC (respectively) is the target of Matrix damage to your persona. If you’re directly connected to the vehicle you’re jumped into, the vehicle takes the Matrix damage.

In other words, VR is entered through your commlink or RCC in order to rig wirelessly, and that device hosts your persona. Your control rig never takes matrix damage, which is good, as it doesn't have a device rating, firewall, or anything.

Any and every device can connect to the Matrix.

While it is true that nearly any electronic device can be on the matrix, none of them can act as a commlink (thus getting YOU on the matrix) unless specified.

Your gun can exist on the matrix, but you can't communicate through it unless you buy a weapon commlink from Run & Gun.

A datajack can't connect you to the matrix, except in tandem with a commlink, or I guess if you plug into something. Yet the datajack even has a wireless bonus.

An RCC, explicitly, "can act as a commlink". A cyberdeck "can perform all of the functions of a commlink". (p223)

A survival knife "can be used to make commcalls", meaning it doesn't even give the entire benefit of a commlink.

A control rig says nowhere that it acts as a commlink. It merely gives you SIM and DNI capability.

Ahh... yeah, it look like you also need a device to form your persona on.
(i was wrong and you were right ve4grm)

A persona is is usually based on a commlink, cyberdeck, or rigged vehicle or drone, although technomancers are a sort of device-less persona.

You can't form a persona on your control rig.
Your control rig will not provide you with matrix attributes.
You can't wireless jump into devices with just your control rig.

However, you can make a direct connection with your control rig (using a wire).
(i was wrong and you were right about direct connecting with your control rig RHat)

In this special case you will use the matrix attributes of the vehicle you are connected to.
Matrix damage will be soaked by the vehicle device icon.
(again, your control rig does not provide you with a matrix persona and matrix attributes).
It take a simple action to jump in from your meat body if you are directly connected.
...and you are immune to noise

So, in short; i could EITHER connect directly via wire OR jump in using the commlink, neither of which require me to have the control box on me, correct?

what are the advantages of one over the other?

...you can also direct connect with a wire from your RCC (or commlink / cyberdeck)

In this case you will form your persona on your RCC and use the matrix attributes of your RCC
The vehicle icon will be merged/replaced by your RCC persona.
Matrix damage will be soaked by your RCC.

While jumped in using a RCC you can jump into your other slaved devices without first entering AR or VR.
This is something you cannot do with commlink or cyberdeck
...and probably what they mean by this:
The control rig also connects more smoothly through an RCC when operating in VR.

RCC can also provide you with noise reduction while jumped in remote (at the cost of sharing)

With a RCC it is a complex action to jump from one device to another.
Without RCC you first have to jump out to VR or AR and then jump into the next device.
It is a simple action to jump out into VR or AR
It is a simple action to jump in from VR
It is a complex action to jump in from AR (your meat body)
It is a simple action to jump in from your meat body if you have a direct connection with a wire.

This example is assuming i don't have the RCC on me, but do have a (shitty) commlink.

With a commlink and control rig you can either:

1) direct connect your control rig with a wire to the vehicle and jump in as a simple action
2) direct connect your commlink with a wire to the vehicle and jump in as a simple action
3a) Use your commlink to enter VR and jump into the vehicle as a simple action
3b) Use your commlink to enter AR and jump into the vehicle as a complex action

1)
does not require your commlink.
will use the matrix attributes of your vehicle
require that you are physically in your vehicle
does not require that your vehicle is wireless ON
you are immune to noise

2)
will use the matrix attributes of your commlink
require that you are physically in your vehicle
does not require that your vehicle is wireless ON
you are immune to noise

3)
will use the matrix attributes of your commlink
can be done remote
require vehicle to be wireless ON
not immune to noise

Everything is wireless in SR5
...so you don't actually need to bring your RCC with you to still use it to remote jump into your vehicle

(but noise due to distance might become a serious issue i guess, all vehicle actions count as matrix actions while jumped in)

Mm, being immune to noise by being able to disable the wireless and connect from Control Rig to Drone is another valuable thing.  Though considering how close you need to be to do this kind of thing, it's really only viable in vehicles or exceptionally large drones with rigger cocoons.  In three and a half years when Rigger 5 comes out and they add better ways to conceal weapon mounts and add rigger cocoons back in, then you might be able to make use of that in combat.

Now in a high speed car chase on the other hand...  That is when plugging right into your car and disabling wireless becomes the best thing in the world.

Jeeze.  It would almost sound stupid until you realize we're talking about an immortal elf clown sword fighting a dragon ghost in a mall.

You can't wireless jump into devices with just your control rig.

Sure you can - you're just forming your persona on the vehicle.

That is a possibility as well. The book is very vague..... :(

But you need to already be in AR or VR to "jump into" the vehicle
...unless you are using a direct connection

Doesn't seem as if you can form a persona on your control rig that let you "browse" the matrix wireless in VR.
...that if you you are in VR before you take the jump you already first based your persona on a device (like your RCC).

Then again, the control rig does have a sim-module....
According to p 222 DNI and a sim module required for VR use
Having a persona might is not a requirement for VR use...?

....but then the question becomes "what matrix actions can you perform without having a persona"???
For example, what Data Processing-limit would you use when you take a matrix perception test while in VR using the sim module on your Control Rig (and no commlink / RCC / cyberdeck) before you jump into a drone or vehicle?

Or can you only take matrix actions that does not require a test??
Jump into a rigged device is normally a Data Processing Test, but you don't need to take a test if you are the owner...
Entering a Host does not require a test, can you enter a host without having a persona...???
(it doesn't really add up)
