(Preface: my whole shadowrun group are noobs, including me. Just ran the first game. Lotta kinks to work out  :-\)

One of my players is a troll Shaman (he decided it would be fun to take less of a charisma buff against drain, which is awesome).

He took shape-shifting. Now, during the game the team chased some gangers out of a bar, and he shapeshifted into a crow to chase after one of them. While the image of a massive troll running out of a Redmond bar and instantly jumping into the air and becoming a small bird was entertaining, we realized later on closer reading that you can only shift into non-para critters within two body of you. Which I think leaves for him (if only using SR4A content) a choice of Horse or Great Cat.

Is there a sourcebook with a big 'ole list of critters that might be more troll-friendly? I realize that all non-paranormal birds are almost definitely out of the question for him but... maybe an albatross on performance enhancers?

There is a PDF source book that has more creatures in it, but I don't know if there are more that would be troll type size. Another option would to be yeah you can change into a crow, but it is a huge crow and will stand out. Another thing to realize is that just because he becomes a bird doesn't mean he knows how to fly automatically.

Have him take critter form bird. IIRC correctly, the specialized spell removes that limit.

I wouldn't read it that way... "Critter form works like the shapechange spell..." Sounds to me, that the same restrictions apply.

Running Wild is the book you need. It has tons of critters - normal, awakened and emerged.
The biggest bird has Body of 2, so the troll would still have to cast and sustain a Decrease Body spell on himself.

Or use the Arcana skill (or pay someone who has the Arcana skill) to make a new spell that allows one to turn into other kinds of creatures, such as a Thunderbird.

Key point that is overlooked with Shapechange is that the completely mundane animal does NOT still have to be alive. So shapechanging into a dodo bird or a Tasmanian devil is both legit, even if both are extinct...

And so are dinosaurs...

(Image the possibilities)

*Edit to add the word 'animal'

Tzizimine, I will publicly blame you when my naga magician shapeshifts into a velociraptor.
