hi guys

i'm fairly new to running shadowrun and am currently running with ed3 mainly because i got given a lot of the source books.

a member of our group is quite a handful but i just wanted some clarification reg the armor spell for my own knowledge. there is currently a mage using a sustaining foci with armor 6 and i know that he will try to say it is constantly active so my questions are as follows

1 - if a sniper using capsule rounds with Gamma-Scopolamine/DMSO in them shoots at them, do they gain proitection from the armor spell?
2 - the armor spell emits a 'glowing aura'. how does this work if they also have the invisibility spell running in a sustaining foci. is the 'aura' still visible?
3 - if they were still using the armor spell constantly, would you have them eventually picked up by LS for open use of unregistered magic?  ;D

thanks

1. No; Armor provides Armor, gamma-scopalamine is a toxin.
2. The rules don't cover this.
3. Keep in mind you can have a fake license for that. Running around glowing is not a good plan and LS would at least check their license, it will also draw attention.

Armor is unfortunately a crap spell. Combat Sense is much better, so is Deflection.

Yes the glow make it of limited use.
It will protect against the actual bullet but not the toxin. If the bullet is stopped completely i gues no harm will come from the toxin.

But when the shit hits the fan it can be a nice enough bonus. Or better yet cast it on yur body the big bag trog samurai and let him take all the enemy fire (after you can have him thank you for the extra protection you provided at a critical moment so he survived  :D)

Yes, the Armor spell protects just like body armor, treat it accordingly

If a person is invisible, they will still glow, but, since they and anything on them cannot be seen, it doesn't get noticed.  The reason for this is because the mind doesn't register them being there.  A floating glowing cloud that is a part of them would negate that effect.

If they are a SINner, they can choose if they are registered.  Otherwise, eventually yeah, it just needs to be witnessed.  Once it has been corroborated, a mage can assense and confirm.  Criminal SIN and jailtime.

Wouldn't Armor 6 require a rating 6 sustaining focus? That's 60,000 nuyen right there, with an availability of 24. He'd be better off binding a spirit to sustain it for him.

Actually I was thinking the same thing, but he is using 3rd edition and I can't remember how it works back then.

In 4th ed, you max out at a sustaining foci rating 3 for beginning characters, which means that +3/+3 armour is a nice bonus, but it ain't game changing.  or they can sustain the spell directly and take that -2DP penalty.  Which most choose not too.   Or binding a spirit.

IMHO Physical Barrier and Armour usually don't slow well aimed burst fire (or gosh forbid, full auto long burst) very well.  They help, but only so much.

You could also hit him with stick 'n shock.  only 5S, but if just one box of damage gets through, the electricity effect hits the mage.  Or Gas grenades.  One of my players use gas grenades to great effect.

Have Fun
