Is there any reason you can't take more than 25 karma of negative qualities?

First off I want to say this isn't a "free karma" question its because I was mucking around with character concepts and realized to make one properly I needed 28-31 points of negative karma worth of properties. So I was wondering can I take for the sake of argument 31 points worth of negative qualities for roleplaying purposes but only earn 25 free karma from them as per the rules?

Yep! As long as you only get 25 karma from them, you can take as many points worth as you want.

Is that an official rule change? I believe it's commonly houseruled that way, but the rules on negative quality just say you can't have more then 25 points worth (which isn't the same as only getting 25 points from it). So unless there's an errata or official qualification you can't do it.

Of course, you can always ask your GM nicely and he probably wouldn't mind, but it'd be up to him.

It's been confirmed by others, such as Bull, so yes, you can do it. If you are using Hero Lab to make your character, be aware that it will not only give you a warning about going over the limit with negative qualities, but will also give you those additional points. This should be fixed in the next patch.

No GM will stop you from taking more than 25 karma worth of negative qualities for background and/or role playing purposes - as long as you only get max 25 karma out of it.

Marvelous and the current herolab doesn't let you lock character creation if you have more negative karma than 25 points so you need to work around by using the add 0 karma option in advances and then unlock it if you want to purchase level 2 in dependants or the like then lock it again.

My current character has 38 points worth of negative qualities and is a certifiable loon.  :D

Is there any reason you can't just take the 25 allowed and role-play the rest?

Because sometimes the numbers don't fit 25 exactly? If you want 3 NQs that are each worth 10 points, for example, it's nice to get 25 bonus Karma for them instead of getting 20 for 2 of them and just roleplaying the third.

True! I have had a hard time getting to exactly 25 more than once. I should have stated my question better. Say my disads came to 26, and I only counted 25 of them, and I still wanted another that was 12. ... couldn't one just role play the last disad instead of going to 38?

Theoretically hence why my statement about the variable karma but it would depend on the trait. For some e.g. an addiction or a live in boyfriend/girlfriend it would be reasonably easy to roleplay, for others like having a national SIN not so much. Hence why I wanted to know if you were hard capped at 12 or could take extra, since you can you may as well. Afterall if you can have it you still need to roleplay it and if your roleplaying it you may as well have it.

I wouldn't go that far; if a player went too far overboard with the negative qualities, I'd probably tell them to tone it down, if only because with too many qualities you'd end up with a completely clown-shoes character who'd have a hard time functioning and be a burden on the group, thus disrupting the game. That said, if it's a few points over, I don't see an issue provided the player only gets 25 karma for it. I have one player in my current campaign who ended up taking 28 points' worth of negative qualities, and he does just fine.
