A question for the GMs out there that straddles the line between 4th and 5th Edition rules.

Assume the following:
The table allows weapon modification rules from Arsenal (4th Edition), including the Easy Breakdown modification. If you're not familiar with it, this is what it does:
"With this modification, weapons can be modified to easily break down to pieces small enough to be easily hidden (a rifle might fit into a large briefcase, while the parts of a pistol might serve as pieces of jewellery, etc.)."

Question 1: Would you allow a disassembled rifle to be carried in the Large Smuggling Compartment of SR5?
The large smuggling compartment is described as follows:
"This is a larger version of the smuggling compartment (p. 455). It can hold something the size of a heavy pistol or a small SMG (gamemaster’s discretion—think breadbox size as a guide)."

Question 2: If you would not allow it to be carried in a single compartment, what about two or more?
My thinking is that an assault rifle or larger weapon could be made to fit in two large smuggling compartments, with the possible exception of the barrel. My hip is approximately 15" long, just about long enough for the 14.5" barrel of an M4 Carbine but not long enough for the 20" barrel of an M16. It would definitely not be long enough to fit the barrel of most sniper rifles, as they easily exceed 20" in most cases.

Question 3: Alternatively, would you allow the Easy Breakdown mod to be applied to all components of a weapon, including a barrel, at additional cost?
If yes, what would you consider an appropriate cost for something like a nanotech "memory metal" barrel or a barrel that can break down into multiple sections?

Personally, I'd say no to the first, as I think  a large briefcase is larger than a breadbox.
I'd probably go with yes on option two.

Was running some numbers on concealment earlier as it happens. The large smuggling compartment isn't quite as amazing as it seemed at first glance.

To casual observation, it's great. -10 concealment, +2 for that SMG sized item hidden, -8 is usually reducing chance to spot it to one dice, which as long as they've taken palming is pretty unlikely to be spotted.

On a patdown, though, that changes to -5 concealment, +4 for the SMG sized item, and suddenly it's quite likely to be found unless skilled at palming. And I guess with two things in two compartments they'd get a roll for each, increasing the chance of success further.

Hmm, I'm not sure I'd obey the usual rule for pat downs to a weapon concealed within a smuggling compartment, to be honest. That just seems... wrong.

As for finding multiple items, I'd say that that is similar enough to sneaking, in that you only roll once for each player (palming or sneaking) and for each NPC (perception  in both cases, more often than not). It's not like you roll 4 times for an NPC if there are 4 players trying to sneak past him; each player rolls once, and the NPC rolls once, and if the NPC beats any of the characters then he, and quite possibly the others, are discovered. Same thing for palming as far as I'm concerned.

Well, it does what I'd expect. Visually you don't notice, but patting down you find it's a cyberarm, and everyone knows they sometimes have hidden compartments . . .

Seems fair, I'm convinced.

I'd allow two compartments, as well as a barrel break-down.  In regards to the latter, though, I'd definitely increase your chances of a glitch - and of a critical glitch.
