There's two schools of thought in roleplaying: the rules tell you what you can do and the if the rules don't say you can't, you can.
Usually the latter is preferred by the pink Mohawk crowd. And if that's the kind of game you and your table want, that's fine. Go for it.
Me, I prefer a steady framework of rules, so we're all playing on the same page.
To say that since shift(metavarient) doesn't say you can't subsume your gear means that you can falls into the second school of thought.
And this school thought leads to logical inconsistencies: the rules don't say I can't walk thru wall, therefore I can. Yes, silly example but still the same thought process as I can subsume my gear because it doesn't say I can't.
Finally, rule of cool equals flaming hot pink Mohawk if that's your justification for a rule.
