I'm relatively new to Shadowrun, but its easily one of the most interesting settings I've come across lately. Sadly, the sourcebooks don't really dive into the world itself in great detail. I know there are novels, and have looked them up on Amazon, but I have no idea in what particular order they might go in, and can't seem to find any indication of whether or not they fit into a specific series or not.

So, can anybody tell me which book would be a good one to start with? I'm totally cool with just grabbing a bunch of books at once, so if there is some kind of chronological order, that'd be awesome to know as well.

Into the Shadows is an anthology I beleive is edited by Tom Dowd (could be wrong). Its a collection of short stories from the Sixth World at about 3050. I use that one as a primer for all the SR newbies in the group. Granted, the tech is a bit dated (what is this cyber-DECK thingamagig?), but it still gives a good overall flavor.

As for chronology, I would suggest a Google or Wikipidia search for chronological order.

Wiki link follows:

I believe that a number of the older novels have been released in PDF/digital format.  As well, there is the more recent release, there is Spells & Chrome: http://www.battlecorps.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=2505 (which is also available in print format).

I've read most all them. There are a lot of rather weak books in the series. If you haven't read the first book, Never Deal with a Dragon, you can start there to get a feel for what kicked it all off, but it is severely dated from a timeline perspective.

The newest book/anthology, Spells & Chrome is actually really good. One of the best SR novels I've seen in a long time. It is firmly set in the SR4, including AR and Technomancers.

True, but when you have a lot of the old stuff and only one of the new....

Thanks for the help. That wiki link really does the job well. I'll probably pick up Spells and Chrome in the near future, probably at the same time as the Sixth World Almanac.
