If I'm casting a Direct Damaging Instant Spell like Manaball, and plan to use either reagents (Lets say 12) or Edge, is there any reason at all, that I shouldn't be casting spell at Force 2? (Drain on Manaball is Equal to Force, minimum drain is 2.)

For a Spell that is Sustained, it might make sense to cast a Spell at a higher Force when using Reagents or Edge because of Dispelling (Spell Sustained Resists with Force + Magic), but I can't find any reason not to cast Direct Instant Combat Spells at Minimum Force when using Reagents or Edge.

Am I missing anything?

Normally, Force sets the Limit for the spell. So long as you have reagents or Edge to raise the Limit, you can control Drain by casting at a minimum Force.

other than background count that forces you to raise the force no reason. In fact, you'd better keep it low force so that it is difficult to know you did it.

With an optimized build and some edge, if you can oneshot someone with manabolt you can be a remarkable assasin. Spellcasting 6 gives threshold of 5 to percieve F1 spell cast. With karma you increase it and then basically, you just see the guy and bam he is dead.

Assume: 1. Witness my hate
2. Restricted gear F8 spellcasting combat focus.
3. mentor spirit (+2 combat)
4. speciality combat.
5. 6 point magic/6 point spellcasting.

6+6+2+2+8 = 24 points manabolt, with reagents you can score 8 hits on average, 10 damage resisted by willpower. Does not kill anyone.
If you reroll faliures you get: about 13 hits on average and now you are a good candidate to oneshot people.

You'd better hope no Norse mages catch him with that Valknut. Since it's one of the symbols of Odin, they'd likely be a tad unhappy about a chaos mage having one. Just adds another layer to RP, which could be fun.

You are missing Increased Reflexes.
You can't kill people if you don't have enough actions to do so. Expect some long bursts from a savvy opponent to be your undoing.

Point buy is needed for power focus F6 but being an aspected sorcerer is limiting oneself in my opinion. If you do it for RP reasons, then ok. I don't like point buy so I tried making your character in priority (nearly always better). Result: some things better, some worse.

Now full magician  ;D but only combat spell focus  :'( 
Very sad because this version could use a Power focus for summoning too. If I were not going for max combat spell dice, and using this character myself I would go for the Power focus rating 3 and have karma to spare. (no Restricted Gear).


Priorities: Magic A, Attributes B, Meta C, Money D, Skills E

Attributes: Bod 3, Agi 3, Rea 4, Str 2, Cha 2, Int 6, Log 3, Wil 5 Edge 7, Initiative 10+1d6

Better Intuition results in more initiative, more drain dice and better skills  :D

Positive Qualities: Restricted Gear, Revels in Murder, Witness My Hate (same)

Neg Qualities: Choose 25 points.

Skills: No pistols but the important change is trading ritual spellcasting to Summoning. Real Spirits instead of watchers and homunculi! Spirits of Man can even cast combat spells themselves!

12(14) Spellcasting 6+spec (combat) (22 dice for combat spells!)

12(14) Summoning 6+spec (Spirits of Man)

10 Assensing 4

10 Counterspelling 4

7(9) Perception 1+spec (visual)

3(5) Etiquette 1+spec (Street)

3 Intimidation 1 (with karma)

4 Computer 1 (with karma)

5 Pilot Ground Craft 1 (with karma)


Gear: Spellcasting Focus (Combat) rating 8.  18000 left (+extra if in debt is choosen)

Spells: Death Touch, Mana Ball, Mana Bolt, Power Bolt, Combat Sense, Heal, Increase Attribute (Charisma), Inc Reflexes, Imp Invisibility, Physical barrier

Watcher and Homunculus no longer needed. Increase charisma is broken useful. Inc reflexes is good.

Karma: skills 6, Pos qualities 25, bonded focus 16 (3 left to spend)

If going the Power focus rating 3 route I would lower Assensing and get Binding + a specialization
