Has anyone thought or has come up with an idea on how/what it would take to make a  micro filament katana?

Yes, they’ve been part of the game since First Edition’s Street Samurai Catalogue as the Monofilament Sword. Just describe the one you use as katana-shaped.

One of the 5th ed splat books has one, the Ares "One" Mono-sword iirc. But the rules didn't fit with other mono-filament weapons, so I don't think anyone uses it.

That was pretty much just a 5th Edition stat-block update of the older editions’ monosword, with some added fluff about it being a new model “in universe.”

If you read the shadowtalk comments in the old Street Samurai Catalogue and other splat books, the reason the monosword and monoaxe aren’t quite as devastating as the monofilament whip is that while the whip is made from a single molecule strand that does all the cutting, the axe and sword are both “normal” blades that have a monomolecular filament embedded into their edge. This does enhance the cutting properties of the blade, but there’s still a blade.

Different type of filament :P

Same with fishing line. While you are correct that shoelaces and fishing line are technically monofilaments, they are not only a molecule thick - which is what this particular useage of monofilament means :D

Odds are your shoelace isn't monofilament, since it's almost certainly several strands that have been twisted together into a string or cord. Fishing line is usually monofilament, these days, being made out of synthetic materials like nylon or what have you...

I appreciate the reference to a classic bit of shadowtalk, but I've been wondering for years if it means the future shoelaces of 2050 are actually single stand or if said shadowland commentator or just didn't know what monofilament meant.

Be some tough as hell shoelaces that don't break.  That isn't exactly good for the corporate bottom line, let me tell you.

Something that isn't disposable and needs replacement all the time?  Who has heard of that!!!

Yeah, I think my issue is that they are both called "mono-filament" when the whip should be "mono-molecular". Its a small semantic issue, but kind of important.

It’s both. It’s monofilament because it’s a single strand and since that strand is made from a single molecule, it’s monomolecular.

Now, if only there was a way to coat it in DMSO to use it as a delivery vector for mononucleosis...

I can just hear the mega-corp marketing team:
But, there will be an uptick in cybersurgery and vat cloning replacement fingers. This is is a win-win for the product!

I'm going go have to get cyberhands just to tie my shoelaces now!?!!?  ;D

(Your Shoe laces are a mono-filament because its a single stand of nylon, folded back around itself until it reaches the correct length)

But, I could see some Corp Bean counter making the cyber-replacement argument :P
